SUNY Old Westbury women's lacrosse (3-7) were unable to overcome a
seven goal deficit at halftime on the road in Friday's 20-16
non-conference loss to the Moravian Greyhounds (6-5) from HUB Quad
Field.
Alex Johnston put Moravian in front with a goal 32 seconds in for the early lead. The Greyhounds followed with nine more goals before Danielle Weir answered for Old Westbury at 10:27. Following Johnston's third goal of the half, Weir found Taylor Guarneri with 3:48 left to ignite a 3-0 Panther run as Halle Johnson contributed two goals to close out the half.
Trailing 11-4 entering second-half play, Old Westbury continued its run with seven more goals as Natasha Treuman's goal with 19:07 remaining capped a 10-0 run. Treuman's goal tied the game at 11 before Johnston put away back-to-back goals to put Moravian back in front for good. Gabriella DiPierno and Treuman replied with goals to make it a 14-13 game, but a 6-3 Greyhound run over the final 9:04 halted Old Westbury's comeback.
Weir handed out two assists and set a career high with four goals. Treuman and Johnson followed with three scores while Guarneri, DiPierno and Sara Bey each scored twice. Courtney Gallagher controlled three draws to go along with five caused turnovers and four ground balls. Christine Fernandez scooped a career-high five ground balls and caused three turnovers. Ashley Gugliuzzo (3-7) made 13 saves for Old Westbury.
Johnston led all scorers with eight goals while Eileen Rolwood added five goals, six draw controls and six ground balls for Moravian. Kelley Gavin (6-5) stopped seven shots to secure the Greyhounds' victory.
