Panthers Sweep Conference Doubleheader

Purchase, NY – The Purchase softball team picked up a pair of Skyline Conference wins after a doubleheader sweep over Sarah Lawrence College Friday evening.  The Panthers won the first game 4-3 and the second 7-1 in five innings.

In the opening game, standout pitching performances by both teams would result in four scoreless innings.  Purchase would get up on the board first in the bottom of the fifth after senior pitcher Samantha Alonzo (Wappingers Falls, NY) sent a bomb over the left field fence, tallying her first home run of the season. In the same inning, rookie ace Lisa Kentris (FR/Latham, NY) made it 2-0 in favor of Purchase with a RBI triple left field.

In the sixth inning, Alonzo singled to center field to bring in teammate Briana Leon (JR/Glen Cove,
NY) to score Purchase's third run of the game.

The Gyphons rallied in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 3 apiece. Taryn Penna doubled to left field, bringing in two runners to score.  Penna came in to score the tying run off teammate Riley Vuyovich's RBI double.

In the bottom half of the inning, with runners on second and third base, Leon secured the 4-3 win for Purchase with a RBI bunt that brought Nicole Fortuna (JR/New Rochelle, NY) in to score.

Alonzo (5-1) picked up the win for Purchase after a complete game on the mound, while Kamaron McNair (4-6) was tagged with the loss for Sarah Lawrence.

In the second game, the Panthers took control early as they scored three runs in the second inning.  They added another two in the third and one more in the fourth to bring their lead to 6-0 to start off the fifth inning.

The Gryphons scored their only run of the game off a RBI single by Em Hammett at the top of the fifth inning.

Purchase would make it 7-1 in the bottom of the fifth before the game was called due to darkness.

Shannon Clancy (SOBabylon, NY) led the Panthers in game two, batting 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored.

Fortuna (7-0) allowed only four hits and one run, while striking out two batters over five innings on the mound for Purchase.

The Panthers return to the diamond on Sunday with a Skyline doubleheader against The Sage Colleges.
