MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The
Wells College men's lacrosse team recorded a 21-8 defeat at Morrisville
State College on Wednesday. With the loss, Wells moves to 2-11 overall
and to 1-6 within the North Eastern Athletic Conference. The Mustangs,
who won the 2015 NEAC Championship, improve to 10-2 while remaining
undefeated in seven league fixtures.
Wells managed to score eight goals
against the Mustangs, the most allowed by Morrisville State against a
NEAC opponent in 2016. Junior Alex Milliken (Hilton, N.Y.) scored a team-leading four goals, adding two assists for six points (4-2=6) while tying with sophomore Aaron Heisey (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) with four ground balls.
Heisey, senior Connor Jansen (Horseheads, N.Y.), sophomore Brian Buttner (Highland Mills,
N.Y.) and classmate Tanner Mingen
(Houston, Texas) rounded out the goal scoring for Wells. Jansen added
two assists while Mingen registered an assist of his own. Defenseman Derrick Owens (Utica, N.Y.) racked up a team-best three caused turnovers.
Morrisville scored three goals within
2:08 in the first quarter before Heisey forced home a pass from Milliken
with 5:30 to go, putting Wells on the scoreboard. A quick 5-0 run
created an 8-1 lead before Milliken scored unassisted with 1:45
remaining in the first half, sending Morrisville State into halftime
with an 8-2 lead.
Despite a Milliken goal, set up by
Jansen, with only 34 seconds elapsed in the second half, Morrisville
State would hold on to the decisive victory. Wells had a brief rally in
the fourth quarter, scoring three-straight goals at one point, but the
Mustangs ended the game on a 6-0 scoring run.
Wells goalkeeper Elijah Tracey (Utica, N.Y.) made 15 saves in the loss. The tandem of Christopher Fiore and Dan Sherlock combined to make 10 saves on 18 shots faced for the Mustangs.
Nick Geswaldo scored four goals and added an assist for five points, tying for the Mustangs team lead in point scoring with Brad Biggs and his two goals and three assists. Scott Augustine picked up a team-best eight ground balls for Morrisville State.
Wells will return to action this
Saturday, Apr. 30 as it hosts SUNY Cobleskill in a 2 p.m. tilt. The
Express will honor both of its graduating senior student-athletes,
Jansen and Flaherty, with a pre-game ceremony on Senior Day.
