SUNY Maritime Women’s Lacrosse Falls in Close Matchup with Old Westbury, 12-10

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The Maritime Women's Lacrosse team dropped a road Skyline Conference decision to the Old Westbury Panthers on Saturday afternoon by the score of 12-10 on Long Island.

Maritime was led by freshman Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) with four goals and two assists, while junior Jane Quinn (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) added two goals and one assist in the effort. Rookie Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) chipped in with a pair of goals, while sophomore Andrea Mitchell (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) has one, freshman Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) added one assist as well.

own, senior Kelsey Ireland (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) and freshman Carol Ann Gennaro (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) both recorded one draw control apiece.

Defensively, freshman Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) had another big game with eight more ground balls, while leading the team with four caused turnovers. Mitchell and Deleva both forced two turnovers apiece on the game, with Deleva scooping up five ground balls and Mitchell picking up four. Murphy also had four ground balls, while Quinn added a pair.

In goal, senior Meghin Paczkowski (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) made nine saves on the game as she took the loss.

Old Westbury surged ahead quickly in the game as they Panthers scored six straight goals to open the contest in the first 15:35.

Pfundstein got the Privateers on the board off a pass from Quinn for her 15th goal of the season. Pfundstein made it two in a row on a free-position shot to trim the early deficit to 6-2.

Deleva made it three straight goals for the Privateers as she took a pass from Murphy with 11:50 left in the opening stanza. Quinn struck with her first of the match with Deleva picking up the helper, then added her second-straight goal as Maritime had trimmed the deficit to just one goal.

Old Westbury scored the final goal in the first period to regain a two-goal lead, and then scored the first of the second half to take an 8-5 advantage.

Deleva stopped the short-lived Old Westbury run with her third of the game, but the Panthers took a 9-6 lead with the next goal.

Maritime evened the game at nine as the Privateers scored three unanswered as Mitchell got the rally going off a pass from Deleva, followed by a pair of free-position goals out of the sticks of both Ireland and Deleva to even the score with 12:11 left in regulation.

Old Westbury then retaliated with three straight goals in just over a four-minute span to lead by a 12-9 score. Deleva finished off the scoring with her fourth of the contest with 2:29 to go, but it was not enough as the Panthers held on for the victory.

Team stats were fairly close between the two sides as Maritime held a 30-27 shot advantage and also recorded 35 ground balls to Old Westbury's 27. Maritime was 7-for-9 on clear chances, while the Panthers were 13-of-20. The Privateers also won 14 of the 24 draw controls.

Maritime (4-7, 2-3 Skyline) will return home for its last matchup on Reinhart Field as the Privateers will battle the St. Joseph's (LI) Golden Eagles for a 7 p.m. start.

Old Westbury (4-9, 2-2 Skyline) will be on the road for the remainder of the season, when the team begins its trip to Farmingdale, for a 3 p.m. start on Tuesday, April 26.
