BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – The
Wells College women's lacrosse team overcame a two-goal deficit in the
second half on Sunday, picking up a 13-12 victory over Bryn Athyn
College. Wells improves to 4-10 overall on the season, moving to 3-5
within North Eastern Athletic Conference play. Bryn Athyn falls to 2-8
on the year and to 1-6 against league opponents.
Freshman Mackenzie Maloney
(Huntington Station, N.Y.) potted five goals, giving her 50 goals on
the season. With 58 points scored as a freshman off of 50 goals and
eight assists, Maloney is only seven points away from tying Sarah Allen '13 and her first-year scoring record of 64 points (57-7=64).
Freshman Renee Bartosz (Blasdell, N.Y.) added three goals while senior Andrea Gould (Fulton,
N.Y.) tallied two markers and picked up a team-leading three assists. Freshman Julia Smith (Guilderland, N.Y.) scored twice while senior Lexie Roberson (Lewisville, N.C.) struck for one goal – Roberson also picked up a team-best four ground balls and eight draw controls.
Wells led by a 3-1 margin after Maloney
potted two of her team's first three goals on the afternoon, using an
unassisted tally only 5:59 into regulation to build the two-goal
advantage. Bryn Athyn would eventually take a 5-4 lead before the
Express would score five-straight times to build a game-high 9-5 lead
with 4:25 to go in the opening half.
Bryn Athyn would go on an extended run
of scoring, cutting the Wells lead to 10-7 at halftime and opening the
second half with the first five goals of the stanza. The Lions
ultimately used four unassisted goals in a row to create a 12-10 lead
with 17:47 remaining in regulation time.
Maloney would propel the Express to
victory, scoring all three of the goals down the stretch to take down
Bryn Athyn. After an unassisted goal with 12:11 to go, Maloney scored at
8:20 and 7:06 with both assists coming from the stick of Gould to win
the game.
The Wells defensive corps was able to
keep Bryn Athyn without a shot for the game's final 7:06, holding on to
the slim one-goal win.
Wells goalkeeper Quinn Doubet (Virgil, N.Y.) made three saves, earning her fourth victory of the year for the Express. Anja Weisser compiled nine saves for Bryn Athyn, yielding 13 goals in the loss.
Michelle Bedford potted a team-best four goals for Bryn Athyn while Miranda Hyatt and Sabrina Colbridge each scored three goals.
Wells will conclude the season next Saturday, Apr. 30, taking on the Wolfpack of Keuka College in a 3 p.m. road contest.
