Vassar Baseball Wins Sixth Straight With 11-1 Victory Over Mount Saint Mary

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 27, 2016) – The Vassar College baseball team and its pitching staff allowed just two hits over nine innings, and Matt Hernandez and Eric Strickland added three hits apiece as the Brewers upped their win streak to six with an 11-1 victory over Mount Saint Mary College Wednesday from Prentiss Field.

The win for the Brewers (16-15) put them over .500 for the first time since three games into the season, when a win over Plattsburgh State made VC 2-1. A complete effort for Vassar saw the bats pound out 16 hits on the contest, while starter Jesse Mulham and reliever John Madsen stifled the Knight hitters to just two hits.

The two hits allowed in a win were the fewest since VC surrendered two against Bard College back
on May 3, 2014. Also, the six-game winning streak for the Brewers matched the second-longest stretch in program history, tying a mark set back in 2014. The longest win streak for Vassar came back in 2003, a seven-win span from April 3-April 13.

Vassar jumped out on top early in the game, as junior left fielder Mike Koscielniak doubled off the right field fence to start the game. Two batters later, sophomore Bobby Kinne scored Koscielniak with a ground out to second base to put VC up 1-0. The Knights (13-22) tied the game in the second inning, but VC regained its lead in the third as Nick Johnson doubled in Brooks English from first base.

The Brewers added two more runs to their total in the fourth inning, as Hernandez plated Strickland after the sophomore had walked and stole both second and third base. The Brewers continued to build their lead in the sixth with two runs, followed by three more in the seventh highlighted by RBI singles by Matt Schwartz and Hernandez.

In the eighth inning, the Brewer offense would put a bow on the scoring, as Strickland and Chris Lee each chalked up RBI as part of a two-run rally. That was plenty of offense for Mulham, as he surrendered two hits and one earned run over six innings to pick up his first collegiate victory. He also struck out two batters over his 95 pitches. Madsen came on and earned the three-inning save, allowing now hits and two walks while registering his first two Brewer strikeouts.

Strickland was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two walks as he reached all five times he came to bat, while Hernandez added three singles and three RBI. Johnson doubled twice for Vassar, and English was 2-for-5 with two runs scored as well. Koscielniak was 2-for-4 as he continued to hold his average above .400, and Kinne scored twice and drove in a run.

The Brewers will return to Liberty League action this Saturday afternoon in Troy, NY, playing their first road games since April 1 as they take on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 1 p.m. for a pair of conference contests.
