Fredonia Softball bounces back to split at Buff State

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Sarah Cuillo's (Blasdell, N.Y./Frontier) two-out, run-scoring single in the top of the seventh and the pitching of freshman right-hander Emily Shellenberger (Philadephia, Pa./Little Flower Catholic) carried Fredonia over Buffalo State, 3-2, in the second game of a SUNYAC softball doubleheader Saturday. The host Bengals won the opener, 13-3, in five innings.

Cuillo, a junior catcher, singled up the middle to score pinch-runner Leanne Villani (Lake Grove, N.Y./Lake Ronkonkoma) from second base. Villani was running for sophomore Katelyn Dennis (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder), whose two-out double to center came off losing pitcher Jordan Sarat. Shellenberger worked around a one-out single in the last of the seventh to nail down the complete-game win and improve to 3-8. She scattered 12 hits and pitched out of enough james to strand 11 Buffalo State base runners.

In the process, the Blue Devils ended a seven-game losing streak and improved their record to 7-17
overall and 3-7 in the conference. The Bengals fell to 13-15 and 3-7.

Her teammtes staked Shellenberger to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. With out out, senior Kim Lotocki (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) reached on an error and advanced to third on a double by junior Erin Mushtare (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta). Lotocki and Mushtare scored on a double by junior Khee Nance (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk).

Buffalo State cut the margin to 2-1 with a run in the last of the second and pulled even with a run in the last of the fifth.

The Blue Devils threatened in the sixth when Mushtare tripled with two outs. Sarat retired Nance on strikes to get out of the jam. Mushtare was 3 for 3 in the game.

In the opener, the Bengals tattooed two Fredonia pitchers for 13 hits and won going away. Freshman right-hander Erika Whitney (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville) was the losing pitcher. Offensive for Fredonia, Cuillo was 2 for 3 with an RBI.

With the split, Fredonia retained its three-point lead over Buffalo State in The Battle of the Lake, 14 1/2 to 11 1/2. Still left on the schedule: Women's lacrosse Tuesday at Buffalo State and the SUNYAC Outdoor Track & Field championship meet at Oneonta next month.

The Blue Devils stay in SUNYAC mode with a home doubleheader Sunday against Plattsburgh starting at noon.
