Herons edged by Vassar 5-4

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-The William Smith College tennis team was edged by Vassar 5-4 in a Liberty League contest this afternoon. The loss drops the Herons to 9-7 overall on the season and 2-3 in Liberty League action.

The Herons jumped in front in this afternoon's match behind two doubles wins. At No. 2, first-year
Alex Greenberg and junior Katarina Kostovic cruised to an 8-2 victory. With the win, Greenberg and Kostovic improve to 7-3 overall as a doubles team, playing all 10 matches at No. 2 doubles. In the top spot, junior Hannah More and sophomore Michaelann Denton collected their team best 16th win of the season. They beat Hanna McGuire and Shayna Becker, the Oracle/ITA Northeast 15th ranked doubles team, 8-4. The Brewers collected a doubles point with an 8-1 win at No. 3.

Vassar (12-7, 5-1) clinched the overall match victory behind four singles wins. More defeated Kate Christensen 6-2, 6-3 in the top spot. More's 17th win of the season improves her winning streak to nine straight matches. At No. 3, Denton rallied to earn William Smith's fourth and final point, defeating Kelsey Van Noy 5-7, 6-4, 10-6. Denton is now 14-5 in singles play season, including a 10-1 mark at No. 3.

The Herons will be back in action tomorrow, April 24, when they travel to Rensselaer for a Liberty League contest. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. in Troy, N.Y.
