Clarkson hangs on to defeat William Smith 6-4

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College lacrosse team outscored Clarkson 3-1 in the second half, but the Golden Knights hung on for a 6-4 Liberty League win on Boswell Field this afternoon. The Herons are now 3-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play, while Clarkson improves to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in the Liberty League.

Junior Alexandra Bird led William Smith with two goals. Sophomore Ali Burns and senior Hannah Connolly each added a goal for the Herons. Senior Emy Stratton shared a game-high with four ground balls and added two caused turnovers. Sophomore Allie Flaherty won two draws, and junior Jackie Rogers posted three ground balls. Junior Sarah Honan played all 60 minutes and made six saves.

ground balls. She also posted two draws and a caused turnover. Ashley Flick and Kate Dillon each added two goals. Amanda Ellman notched a game-high three caused turnovers. Samantha Gladd played all 60 minutes in goal and made 11 saves.

Bird opened the game with her ninth goal of the season 8:30 into the game. The Golden Knights then went on a five goal run to close out the first half. Emma Jeffrey started the run and Kate Dillon and Ashley Flick added two goals each. Wright registered three assists in the first half.

William Smith scored the first three goals of the second half to get within one with 3:58 left in the game. Bird posted her second goal of the day 53 seconds into the half. Connolly notched her 20th goal of the season on a free position with 26:09 on the clock to make it 5-3. With 3:58 remaining, Burns posted her 12th goal of the year also on a free position to make it 5-4. However, the Herons were unable to get any closer. Stephanie Lynch found the back of the net after a feed from Wright with 2:44 remaining for the final score.

The Herons held an 18-17 edge in shots. Clarkson recorded a 14-13 advantage in ground balls. Draws were split 6-6. The Golden Knights were successful 21-of-23 clear attempts, while William Smith was successful on 12-of-15 tries.

The Herons will be back in action on Saturday, April 9, when they host St. Lawrence at 3 p.m.
