After Medaille gave up a single unearned run in the top of the first, the Maverick bats came alive following a (12) day layoff. It started with a leadoff single by Kyle Powell (Haddon Heights, NJ, Haddon Heights ), and continued when TJ Serba (Tonawanda, NY, Sweet Home) drew a walk in the very next at-bat. Two batters later Kris Kruszka (Gowanda, NY, Gowanda) hit a bomb that rolled all the way to the wall, earning his (21) RBI as Powell crossed home plate and Serba advanced to third.
A wild pitch let Serba touch home and Kruszka advance to third with Dan Lumadue (Buffalo, NY,
Williamsville East) at the dish. Lumadue wasted no time, getting a base hit and earning his first RBI of the afternoon as Medaille ended the first inning up (3-1).
The Panthers got one run back in the top half of the second; however, Lumadue's second RBI of the game brought home Daniel Luppens (Wading River, NY, Shoreham Wading River) and Medaille was back in front by two. The run was manufactured perfectly by Luppens, who got in scoring position by stealing second on a pick-off attempt and wisely advanced to third on a throwing error by the first baseman.
Unfortunately for Medaille, their bats went silent over the next three innings. The Mavs mustered just two walks in that span, while Pitt-Bradford plated two in the fifth and seventh innings to turn a (4-2) deficit into a (6-4) lead.
Knowing they needed multiple runs to keep things going, the Mavericks did just that in dramatic style. Travis Chavanne (Cheektowaga, NY, West Seneca East) got things rolling with a pinch hit single to lead off the inning. He was moved into scoring position when Powell followed him up with his third walk of the game. Things got a little tricky after Chavanne was picked off at second by the catcher for the first out; but a balk on the Pitt-Bradford pitcher immediately after once again put a runner in scoring position.
Powell was moved to third by a single from Serba, and was brought home when Luppens hit a rocket to the wall for his (17) RBI of the season. Kruszka was intentionally walked to load the bases, and the move worked initially as Lumadue struck out looking for out number two.
That's when Coach Sova made the move to bring in Jared McStine (Endicott, NY, Union-Endicott) as a pinch hitter with the winning run on second base. McStine proved that was a great call, as he smacked a pitch into right field and drove home Luppens and Serba for the walk-off win.
Powell, Serba, and Luppens all scored twice in the victory; while Powell reached base a team high four times with one hit and three walks. Junior Nick Pullo (Tonawanda, NY, Tonawanda) pitched (6.1) innings, giving up just three earned runs while striking out (6) in the no decision.
The win improved Medaille to (7-12) overall and (2-3) in conference play, as the two got ready to finish their series off with a nine inning affair.
As exciting as game one was for the Mavericks at the plate, game two was the exact opposite. Medaille scattered seven hits over nine innings, with their only run coming on a Serba RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. Meanwhile the Panthers scored three in the first and third innings; adding one more in each of the final three innings to take game two (9-1).
Junior Joe Napolitano (Millerton, NY, Housatonic Valley) led Medaille going (2-4) at the plate, while Chavanne went (1-4) with one run scored in the loss.
The split leaves Medaille sitting at (7-13) overall and (2-4) in AMCC play heading into a weekend double header with La Roche College. The Mavs will take on the Redhawks on Saturday, April 16 with first pitch of game one scheduled for 1:00pm.
