CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Syracuse softball team split
with ACC foe Virginia on Saturday afternoon at The Park, coming up
short in the first game 5-3 before a slugfest in the latter game put the
Orange on top 10-8.
Early-on scoring in the second game put the
Cavaliers at a 7-4 advantage in the third inning, but the Orange
bounced back, knotting the game up thanks to an RBI double by Fernandez
that eventually triggered three more runs in the same frame. A base hit
by Doane, a Cavalier error, and a ground out made it a 10-7 ballgame.
The
Cavaliers added one more run in the bottom of the fifth off of a solo
home run to center field, but that's as close as they would get, as the
two teams held each other scoreless to cap a 10-8 victory for the
Orange.
- Sophomore Sammy Fernandez racked up four hits in her five at bats in the second game, while
recording her sixth double of the season that drove in a run.
- Sophomore Maddi Doane added three hits and a stolen base in the second game.
- The duo of Fernandez and Doane combined for nine hits in the doubleheader.
- Freshman Andrea Bombace
tallied her sixth home run of the season in the second game, driving in
three runs after sending one past the left field wall in the first
inning.
- Freshmen Hannah Dossett and Alicia Hansen accounted for half of the Orange's eight hits in the first game, racking up two hits apiece.
- Senior pitcher Jocelyn Cater
tallied her first save of the season in the second game, tossing the
last 1.2 innings and halting the Cavaliers at the plate. She allowed no
hits, no runs, and added three strikeouts.
GAME 1
The Orange started things off with a run apiece in the first three innings, with Sammy Fernandez
beginning the sequence in the first at bat with a base hit to the
pitcher. With one out on the boards, a fielder's choice play to second
base with the bases loaded sent Fernandez at third home.
An RBI single to center field by Alyssa Dewes brought Alicia Hansen
home in the top of the second, while a combination of a wild pitch and a
throwing error by the catcher plated another Orange run in the top of
the third to give 'Cuse a 3-0 advantage.
Virginia matched
'Cuse's three runs in the bottom of the third inning, after a fielding
error with bases loaded moved one of the Cavaliers home, before an RBI
single and an advance on the throw plated two more UVA runs to knot it
up 3-3.
A solo home run to left field in the bottom of the
fourth inning by Virginia's Allie Arneson put the Cavaliers at a one-run
advantage, 4-3. UVA capped the victory in the bottom of the fifth after
a lead-off double, a sacrifice bunt, and a base hit through the right
side reeled in another run to finalize a 5-3 win for the Cavaliers.
GAME 2
The Orange jumped out to a 3-0 lead once again, but this time off of a three-run homer by Andrea Bombace that brought Fernandez and Maddi Doane home with her after a base hit and a walk.
The
Cavaliers answered right back in the bottom of the opening frame,
drawing in four runs off of a double, a base hit, and a throwing error
that sent two runners home.
The Orange evened things out in the next inning, as a double by Olivia Martinez
and base hits by Fernandez and Doane set up a bases loaded situation
with O'Hara at the plate next. A fielder's choice play at second base
sent Martinez to home plate to tie it up at 4 apiece.
The early
scoring didn't stop, as Virginia added another run on an RBI single in
the bottom of the second, before tacking on two more runs in the next
inning off of two RBI doubles to put UVA at a three-run advantage
heading into the fourth inning, 7-4.
The Orange bats got hot in
the fourth inning, as three base hits in a row by Doane, O'Hara, and
Burkhardt drove in two runs to make it a one-run ballgame, 7-6. Syracuse
continued to surge in the fifth inning, as the Orange stole the lead
back off of three hits and two Cavalier errors to make it a 10-7
ballgame.
A base hit and a throwing error placed Hansen and
Martinez on the corners, before a double to left center by Fernandez
sent Hansen at third home. The Orange tacked on two more runs in the
next at bat off of a base hit by Doane that welcomed Fernandez and pinch
runner Aliyah Wade
home due to a Cavalier throwing error. O'Hara sealed the deal with a
ground out to the shortstop that brought Doane home with one out on the
boards.
Virginia tried for a comeback with a lead-off homer to
center field in the bottom of the fifth, but that's as close as the
Cavaliers would get to the Orange.
Sydney O'Hara registered the win after coming in and tossing 2.2 innings, allowing two hits while retiring seven batters. Senior Jocelyn Cater
tallied her first save of the season after pitching the last 1.2
innings and halting the Cavaliers at the plate. She allowed no hits, no
runs, and added three Ks.
