Mariners Drop Wednesday Morning Affair With Alvernia, 16-5

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 6, 2019) – The USMMA baseball team lost to Alvernia University, 16-5, on Wednesday morning at the Gene Cusic Classic down in Florida. The defeat drops the Mariners' record to 4-1, while the Golden Wolves improve 5-2 with the win. 

Merchant Marine played from behind the entire game, as Alvernia scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. 

Offensively, freshman Garrett Aichele (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) and senior Tyler Mowry (Peachtree City, Ga.) both had RBI triples in the fourth and seventh innings, respectively. Sophomores Jacob Kelly (Norfolk, Va.) and Colin Baker (Clyde Hill, Wash.) also drove in runs for Merchant Marine. 

On the mound, sophomore Quinton Heck (Massillon, Ohio) suffered the loss after hurling three innings. Freshman Tucker Conlan (Berwyn, Pa.) and sophomore Andrew Hunt (Severna Park, Md.) tossed scoreless innings of relief in the sixth and eighth innings, respectively. 

Up next, the Mariners will take on Saint John's (Minn.) and Otterbein in a doubleheader this Friday, March 8. The first game against the Johnnies is scheduled to start at 9 a.m., while the second against the Cardinals is slated for a 12 p.m. first pitch.
