UAlbany Baseball Splits Doubleheader, Takes Series Over UMBC

ALBANY, N.Y. — Using momentum from yesterdays big 10-4 win, the University at Albany baseball team (10-18, 3-6) split Sunday’s doubleheader with UMBC (14-14, 5-3), with the Danes taking game one, 6-1 and dropping the second, 5-1.

The Great Danes were in control of game one from start to finish. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning, Matt Hinchy singled through the left side to bring home Will Miller. Evan Harasta followed with a single into left field that scored Kevin Donati from third, to put UAlbany up 2-0.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Garrett Longhurst hit a two-out single into right field and then Karson Canaday singled to the third baseman and was able to beat the throw.

Miller would walk to load the bases again and Donati would score Longhurst and Canaday with a
single into right field. Miller scored when Kyle Sacks singled through the left side. Donati scored on a passed ball to push the Danes lead to the final score of 6-1.

UMBC scored their only run in the top of the second when Hunter Dolshun scored on a single to center field from Andrew Casali.

Hinchy batted a perfect 3-for-3 with one RBI and Donati went 2-for-5 with two RBI’s and two runs scored.

Ryan Stinar (3-0) was awarded the victory, pitching 5.0 innings and allowed one earned run on four hits and struck out six batters. Dominic Savino (2) picked up his second save on the year, pitching 4.0 innings and allowed no earned runs on just two hits.

Jacob Christian (2-1) was given his first loss of the year after pitching 3.0 innings and giving up two earned runs on five hits.

In game two, it took six innings for either team to score a run, and UMBC pushed across four runs in the top of the sixth inning. After loading the bases on an intentional walk to Casali from Derek Balbierz, Tim Kelly hit a deep triple to left center field, to that cleared the bases and gave UMBC a 3-0 lead.

Kelly scored the next play, when Nick Naumann singled down the left field line, which would end Balbierz afternoon. UMBC added one more run in the top of the seventh when Jamie Switalski scored from second base off an Anthony Gatto double to right centerfield.

In the bottom half of the inning, Sacks led off with a single to third base and scored a few batters later when Connor Powers hit into a fielder’s choice that got Hinchy out at third. UAlbany was unable to add any more runs in the inning, giving UMBC the 5-1 win.

Conrad Wozniak (4-2) pitched the full 7.0 innings in the win, allowing just one earned run on five hits and struck out three batters.

Balbierz (0-1) was given the loss, allowing four earned runs on three hits in 0.2 innings. Hunter Torres and Joe Romero both came in for relief for the last 1.2 innings.

Starter Marcus Failing pitched a strong 4.2 innings, giving up no earned runs on two hits.

The Danes remain at home as they host St. John’s in a single mid-week game starting at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at Varsity Field.
