TCNJ Nips Vassar Men's Tennis In Contested Battle, 6-3

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY -- The Vassar College men's tennis team hosted the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings Division III Men's Northeast Region No. 12 team Wednesday in The College of New Jersey, battling hard but dropping a highly contested 6-3 decision to the Lions in action from Joss Courts.

The doubles play was hot and heavy from the get go, as all three flights were nip and tuck the entire
way. The Lion's No. 2 pairing of Pierce Cooper and Mitchel Sanders earned an 8-5 win over junior Nick Litsky and senior Evan Udine to take a 1-0 match lead thanks to an 8-5 win. Vassar battled back to even the match score at one after Daniel Cooper and Gray Thurstone of Vassar toppled Mike Stanley and Jack August of TCNJ 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. The final pairs point would go the way of the visitors, as Matt Puig and Tim Gavornik eked out an 8-6 decision over juniors Juan Felipe Laso and Alexander Luckmann.

In singles play, TCNJ tooks a 3-1 lead in the match as Stanley earned a very hard-fough win at No. 3, as he picked up a 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) victory over Udine. The Lions went up by three after Pierce Cooper earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 over Litsky, but that's when Vassar would try to make it's comeback. Laso continued his hot play of late in singles, as he earned a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win over Chris D'Agostino at No. 4. Laso has now won three straight matches, all in straight sets.

The comeback though would fall short in the end, as Mitchel Sanders earned the victory at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-4 scoreline over Daniel Cooper of VC. Vassar's other victory on the day came from freshman Jamie Anderson at No. 5 singles, as he outlasted Omar Bokhari in a very dynamic match filled with marathon points and grueling sets. Anderson would pick up the win thanks to set victories of 7-5 and 7-6, earning the tie break in the second 7-2. TCNJ's final win was at No. 6, as Gavornik defeated Vassar freshman Nick Lee 6-3, 6-3.

The Brewers (7-13) will now turn their attention to St. Lawrence University Saturday morning at 10 a.m. in Liberty League action from Canton, NY.
