ONEONTA, N.Y. – After three extra periods of play, a James Lennon
goal secured the victory for the Lakers as the Oswego State men's
lacrosse team downed Oneonta 9-8 on the road Saturday afternoon. The win
is Oswego's first win in the SUNYAC this season, giving them a
conference record of 1-1 and 4-6 overall. Oneonta moves to 0-2 in the
SUNYAC and 4-6 on the season.
Going into the third overtime period, Oswego won the faceoff thanks to Chase Izyk's
efforts at the face off 'X'. The Lakers were then able to gain the
zone, working the ball around until the 3:11 mark. Lennon got the ball
then, and attacked the net, dodging a Red Dragon defender. He then
ripped a shot into the lower right corner that beat the netminder and
gave Oswego the victory.
Oswego got off to a good start, scoring the game's first two goals, including Zach Anderson's which was the sole goal of the first quarter. Freshmen Jarrod Wilkom
then doubled up the Laker lead as he netted one 50 seconds into the
second stanza. The two squads would then trade goals to finish out the
half, with Oswego's coming by way of Ryan Jelen and Lennon.
Much like the beginning of the contest, the Lakers jumped out of the second half first, scoring twice. Tyler Nason
netted his eighth of the year, while Lennon tacked on another to his
scoresheet. Oneonta wouldn't back down though, scoring three of their
own in the final four minutes of the quarter. Up one goal going into the
final period, Oneonta scored first followed by Jelen and Bobby Emerson
goals. The Red Dragons forced the extra time though, scoring once
midway through the fourth and then one with four ticks left on the
clock.
In the overtime periods both teams had chances, including four Red Dragon shots that were turned aside by Laker goalie Wyatt Russo. Russo would finish with a total of 15 saves.
As a team, Oswego held the edge on groundballs, winning 29 50-50 chances. The team also converted 16-19 clear attempts.
Men's lacrosse will return to action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday as it hosts the Cortland Red Dragons at Laker Turf Stadium.
