Tufts University ended the fourth quarter with an eight-goal run and the
nationally ranked No. 3 Jumbos pulled away for a 19-10 NESCAC win
against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Steuben Field on
Saturday afternoon.
Tufts (9-1, 6-0 NESCAC), which leads the conference with 17 goals per
contest, extended its win streak to five games. The lone blemish on the
Jumbos' season thus far is an 11-10 loss at Stevenson on March 22.
The Continentals (3-7, 1-6) concluded a run of five straight contests
against ranked teams. Hamilton
has played six ranked opponents in its
last seven games, including the Continentals' 12-11 win against then-No.
19 Keene State back on March 15.
For Hamilton, Clay McCollum '19 tied a season-high with five points on four goals and an assist. Sam Sweet '16 chipped in a goal and three assists, and Joe Ricciuti '16 scored two goals. Pat Donahoe '16 and J.D. Brachman '17 posted a goal and an assist apiece. Dan Cahill '17 was credited with a pair of assists and Nate Weinrauch '17 notched the second goal of his collegiate career.
Eric Zurmuehle '18
won 13 faceoffs, scooped up a game-high 11 ground balls and had an
assist for the Continentals. Zurmuehle leads the NESCAC with 99 ground
balls and has won more than 64 percent of his faceoffs.
Matt Creeden '16 recorded career-best totals of five ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Hamilton defense. John Schisler '17 made 15 stops in goal for the Continentals.
John Uppgren paced Tufts with seven points on three goals and four
assists. Uppgren leads the Jumbos with 55 points (32 goals, 23 assists).
Jake Gillespie added four goals and an assist, and Ben Andreycak found
the back of the net four times. Zach Richman scored three goals and
Garrett Clarke and Kyle Howard-Johnson contributed two apiece.
Conor Helfrich won 16 of 26 faceoffs and picked up eight ground balls
for Tufts. Tucker Mathers chipped in four faceoff wins and six ground
balls, and Connor Lansdale caused three turnovers and scored his first
goal this year. Alex Salazar made 11 saves in 57-plus minutes in goal
and Jon Conley stopped two shots in the final 2:47.
Hamilton pulled within a goal at 11-10 just 7 seconds into the fourth
quarter after Zurmuehle won the faceoff, picked up the ground ball and
fed Sweet for his 19th goal. Sweet's tally completed a 5-0 run for the
Continentals. It was also the last goal of the day for Hamilton.
Andreycak gave the Jumbos a 12-10 advantage 62 seconds later and Clarke
scored with 10:53 left. Howard-Johnson made it 14-10 on a man-up goal
with 9:58 remaining and Andreycak struck again 53 seconds later. Clarke
gave Tufts a six-goal lead with 7:37 to go and Richman scored on a pass
from Frank Hattler with 6:01 left. Gillespie made it 18-10 less than a
minute later and Richman rounded out the scoring on a feed from Uppgren
with 3:04 remaining.
The Jumbos jumped out to a 3-0 lead less than two minutes into the
first quarter and Uppgren gave them a four-goal advantage with 9:26 to
go. Ricciuti started and finished a four-goal run for the Continentals
-- the second of which tied the score at 4-4 with 11:48 left in the
second quarter. Cahill assisted on both goals by Ricciuti.
Richman put Tufts back on top with 7:39 remaining in the half, only to
have Hamilton tie the score again 10 seconds later on a goal by
McCollum. The Jumbos responded with a 6-0 spurt that spanned the second
and third quarters. Tufts scored four times in the last 4:17 of the
quarter and led 9-5 at the break. The lead grew to 11-5 after goals by
Gillespie and Howard-Johnson in the opening 1:48 of the third quarter.
The Continentals controlled the rest of the third and roared back
within striking distance. Brachman started the five-goal rally with
12:17 to go in the quarter and McCollum made it 11-7 with 10:29 left.
McCollum found Weinrauch for another goal 35 seconds later and McCollum
pulled Hamilton within 11-9 with 2:15 remaining.
The Continentals, who honored their seniors before the game, travel to
Williams College for more NESCAC action on Tuesday, April 12 at 6 p.m.
The seniors are Sweet, Donahoe, Creeden, Brandon Lew '16, Ricciuti, Alan Baldwin '16, John DeGuardi '16, Ryan McCausland '16 and Sellers Garrett '16.
