MARCY, N.Y. – The Wells
College men's lacrosse team was toppled by the Wildcats from the SUNY
Polytechnic Institute by a 14-9 score on Saturday. With the loss, Wells
falls to 1-9 and to 0-4 against North Eastern Athletic Conference
competition. SUNY Poly moves to 5-8 overall and to 3-2 within the
league.
Junior Cody Roberson (Winston-Salem, N.C.), classmate Alex Milliken (Hilton, N.Y.), sophomore Aaron Heisey (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and sophomore Brian Buttner (Highland Mills, N.Y.) all potted two goals for Wells while sophomore Nicholas Lewis-Antwi (Bronx, N.Y.) added one goal. Milliken joined senior Connor Jansen (Horseheads, N.Y.) with one assist while sophomore Tanner Mingen (Houston, Texas) dished out two helpers.
SUNY Poly opened up a 3-0 lead in the
first quarter, eventually building its lead to 4-1 through the
opening
15 minutes. Back-to-back strikes from Buttner reduced the hosts lead to
4-3, but the Wildcats ultimately used a 5-0 scoring run from the end of
the second half to the seven minute mark of the third quarter to put the
game out of reach.
Lewis-Antwi was the first of
three-straight goals for the Express in the fourth quarter, but the
early damage had been done. In total, SUNY Poly outshot the Express by a
53-to-28 margin and held advantages in ground balls (42-to-35) and
face-off wins (14-to-13) while committing fewer turnovers (24-to-13).
Wells goalkeeper Elijah Tracey (Utica, N.Y.) posted a career-high 20 saves. R.J. Ferrucci made seven saves for SUNY Poly in his fifth goalkeeping victory of the year.
Wells returns to action Tuesday, Apr. 19 as it heads to Keuka College for a 4 p.m. road tilt with the Wolfpack.
