SUNY Cobleskill Softball Sweeps Morrisville State in Walk-Off Fashion at Home
Fighting Tigers End Losing Streak Versus Mustangs
Cobleskill, N.Y. - There was much joy at Fighting Tiger Park on
Wednesday afternoon as the SUNY Cobleskill women's softball team ended
their season long 16-game losing streak with a sweep over visiting
Morrisville State College in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC)
play by scores of 9-7 and 12-11. With the victories Cobleskill improves
to 2-16 overall including a 2-10 mark in league action while the
Mustangs fall to 6-18 overall with a 2-10 record versus NEAC opponents.
In
the opener the Fighting Tigers jumped on the visitors early using a
six-run second inning to establish a 9-4 lead then held on the rest of
the way behind sophomore hurler Emily Anger,
Atlanta, N.Y., Wayland-Cochocton High School, who allowed four earned
runs going the full seven innings while striking out two and walking no
one to notch the victory.
The Cobleskill offense was led by sophomore first baseman Jessica DeVoe, Gloversville, N.Y., Gloversville High School, who was 2-for-4 with two RBI along with sophomore shortstop Jaimee Lord, Mechanicville, N.Y., Ballston Spa High School, who was 1-for-3 with two RBI and junior right fielder Easton Murray, Greenwich, N.Y., Greenwich High School, who also went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
In
the second game, the Orange & Black resorted to last at-bat heroics
to post the win a rollercoaster affair as the Mustangs posted three
runs to tie the game in their half of the seventh inning making the
score 9-to-9. Then in the eighth inning they push a pair of unearned
runs across the plate on some Cobleskill defensive miscues to take an
11-to-9 lead into the bottom of the frame.
The Fighting Tigers then resorted to their version of "Five O'clock Lighting" as freshman second baseman Georgianna Crisci,
Walden, N.Y., Valley Central High School, tripled home sophomore pinch
runner Iesha Gonzalez-Lopez, Johnstown, N.Y., Johnstown High School, to
make the score 11-to-10 with no outs. Then senior left fielder Jessica Massi,
Port Byron, N.Y., Auburn High School, stepped to the plate and launched
the first pitch high over the left field fence to end the contest with a
walk-off home run.
Massi finished the contest 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBI and was joined in the home run column by freshman designated hitter Casey Haughney, Melrose, N.Y., Hoosic Valley High School, who went 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBI and by Jaimee Lord who was 3-for-4 with a homer and an RBI.
The
winners also received strong outings at the plate from Georgianna Crisi
was 4-for-5 with two doubles, a triple and two RBI and from Jessica DeVoe who was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Emily Anger posted the win in relief going 1 2/3rd innings striking out one and one again walking no one.
The
Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Saturday April 23 when they
travel to Marcy, N.Y. to face the SUNY Polytechnic Wildcats in
conference action beginning at 1:00 p.m.
