FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team split its doubleheader
with Fredonia on Wednesday afternoon at Blue Devil Field. Oswego
dominated game one, defeating Fredonia 14-2 in five innings, but were
just edged in the second contest 4-3. With the outcomes, the Lakers go
to 9-7 overall and remain at .500 (3-3) in the conference. Fredonia
moves to 5-9 on the year (1-1 SUNYAC).
GAME 1:
The Lakers took no time at all to get ahead in game one, turning in four runs in the opening frame.
Melissa Mulvaney singled to start the rally, getting to second on an Erin Sweeney walk. Both runners than advanced on a single by Jacquie Porreca, followed by an Alexis Nasca walk that put one on the board for Oswego. Next to bat was Gabriella Vertuccio, who took first on a fielder's choice, allowing Sweeney to score from third. The final two runs of the inning came off of an Ashley Lyman double to left field.
In
the second, Oswego added one more as Sweeney and Porreca hit
back-to-back doubles. After being shutout in the third, the Lakers piled
in nine more to mercy the Blue Devils in five. The first run came by
way of Fredonia as a throwing error by the catcher allowed Tori Trovato
to cross the dish. Later in the frame, Nasca hit a sacrifice fly that
drove in Sweeney. Vertuccio followed that with a double that scored Bailee Welker, who was pinch running for Porreca. Oswego's ninth and tenth runs came by way of a Sarah McCullough single and a Trovato walk.
Up
10-0, top of the fourth, with the bases loaded, Mulvaney bombed a grand
slam over the left field fence. Fredonia would put up two runs in the
bottom of the final inning but Oswego closed the door to earn the win.
Brittney Sears
picked up the win, pitching four innings and only allowing two hits.
The junior transfer also punched out five before Nasca entered to finish
the game.
GAME 2:
Once again the Lakers struck first, this time courtesy of an Alexis Nasca
three-run shot in the third. Mulvaney got on due to an error by the
third baseman and pushed forward by a single by Porreca two batters
later. Nasca jumped at the opportunity, sending a ball over the fence
that plated all three.
The Blue Devils didn't back down though,
scoring four runs of their own over the next two innings. Oswego had a
shot in the final frame, as Katie Heselden found herself in the tying-run position on second, but no one was able to bring her home.
