Hamilton College women's rowing defeated Union College in a pair of races on the Erie Canal in Rome, N.Y., on Sunday.

Hamilton kept the Gilman Plate in Clinton by defeating Union in the varsity eight and retained the Gilman Goblet with a victory against the Dutchwomen in the second varsity eight.

The Continentals, ranked 12th in the varsity eight in the most recent Division III Top 15 coaches poll,
finished second behind Franklin & Marshall College in both the varsity and second varsity eight races. Franklin & Marshall is one of five varsity eights that is in the poll's "others receiving votes" category.

"It was a beautiful day on the canal with great racing conditions," Hamilton head coach Rob Weber said. "Our women's crews have responded well to a lot of illness this week, which left us short-handed and having to reshuffle lineups. They've shown great flexibility and resiliency this week, and that's going to pay off later this season and beyond. The F&M women are legitimate contenders and proved that today."

In the varsity eight, the Diplomats posted a winning time of 6:57.49. The Continentals were next in 7:04.57 and Union was third with a time of 7:14.39.

In the second varsity eight, Franklin & Marshall edged Hamilton for first place by 1.21 seconds. The Diplomats recorded a time of 7:33.31 and the Continentals finished in 7:34.52. The Dutchwomen were third in 7:45.92.

Saturday's regatta at St. Lawrence University was cancelled due to high winds in Waddington, N.Y.

The Continentals travel to the Cayuga Inlet in Ithaca, N.Y., to row against Ithaca College, Marist College and Colgate University on Saturday, April 23.
