Early push makes festive day in Bronx a winner

Recap courtesy of New York Yankees and Bryan Hoch
NEW YORK -- Big-swinging Luke Voit picked up where he left off at the end of last season and Masahiro Tanaka snapped his string of subpar Opening Day efforts, leading the Yankees to a 7-2 victory over the Orioles on Thursday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

Voit, who helped the Yankees secure a postseason berth by slugging 14 homers in 39 games after his late-July acquisition, cracked a three-run blast in the first inning as part of a four-RBI performance. Greg Bird also hit an eighth-inning shot for the Yanks, who set a Major League record with 267 homers last season.

Pressed into Opening Day duty following an early-March injury to ace Luis Severino, Tanaka pitched into the sixth inning, enjoying success against the Orioles after going 0-2 with a 9.49 ERA in his three previous season-opening efforts. Tanaka permitted two runs (one earned), scattering six hits and striking out five without issuing a walk.

New York’s fourth run scored on a Miguel Andujar double-play ball in the third inning. Orioles starter Andrew Cashner permitted six runs on six hits and four walks over four-plus innings, leaving two men on in the fifth. Mike Wright Jr. hit Voit on the left elbow to force home a run, and Andujar lifted a sacrifice fly.

Adam Ottavino pitched 1 1/3 scoreless, hitless innings in his Yankees debut, striking out three. The Yankees won their second consecutive Opening Day contest after losing six straight from 2012-17. New York improved to 6-2 all-time in March, including 2-1 last year.

Cano's impressive debut carries Mets past Nats

Photo recap below courtesy of New York Mets and
WASHINGTON -- The idea was to bring a dose of ultra-professionalism to the Mets’ lineup, and who better than Robinson Canó? One of the game’s best players for a decade and a half running, Cano was on something approaching a Hall of Fame arc before joining the Mets via a seven-player trade this winter. His charge? To lead a team with October aspirations.

As far as first days on the job go, Cano could not have fared much better. The veteran second baseman drilled a home run in his first at-bat with his new team, turned a critical third-inning double play and added an insurance RBI single in the eighth, leading the Mets to a 2-0 Opening Day win over the Nationals on Thursday at Nationals Park.

One of the Mets’ primary offseason acquisitions, Cano came to the team in December in the trade

Strong First Half Not Enough for Women's Lacrosse in 12-9 Loss to Ramapo

March 13th recap, photo courtesy of SUNY Maritime
The Maritime College women's lacrosse team came out strong in the first half of their home opener against Ramapo College on Wednesday night, but ultimately fell to the Roadrunners 12-9.

Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) got things rolling for the Privateers with an unassisted goal just three minutes into the game and Maritime held that 1-0 lead until 21 minutes left in the half where a Ramapo goal tied the game. After both teams traded goals once again, Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) recorded her 100th career point with a crafty goal in front of the net off a pass from Deleva. Deleva continued to facilitate the Maritime offense as she recorded five consecutive assists in the opening half to help the Privateers take a 7-5 lead into the locker room.

Pfundstein netted four goals in the first half, with three of them coming off a pass from Deleva. Also chipping in first half goals for Maritime were Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) and Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River). Wright was also key for Maritime's success on offense as she took an 8-4 advantage in draw controls.

Unfortunately, Maritime's high-powered offense couldn't keep it going in the second half as the Roadrunners limited them to just two goals. Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) and the Privateers defense continued to limit Ramapo's offensive chances, but they were unable to hold onto the slim lead for the remainder of the second half.

Hernandez recorded 11 saves in the loss, but picked up some clutch second half shots to keep Maritime within striking distance. Pfundstein finished with five goals to lead all scorers, while Deleva set a new program record for assists in a game with six. Wright finished with 12 draw controls compared to just 10 from Ramapo, while also causing five turnovers and picking up nine ground balls.

"Obviously we wanted to come out with a win today, but I'm very happy with our first half performance against a tough Ramapo team," said head coach Alyssa Guido. "The team executed our game plan very well to start the game and I think there's a lot that we can build off of from today."

MacLeod Nets Gamewinner In Triple Overtime Thriller

Recap, photo courtesy of Vassar College
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL – Senior Fiona MacLeod (Garden City, NY) scored with 45 seconds left in the third overtime to give the Vassar women's lacrosse team a 15-14 victory over Westfield State on Tuesday evening.

The Brewers pick up their first win of the season and move to 1-2, while Westfield falls to 2-2. MacLeod finished with one goal and an assist, while Kelly Pushie (Mahwah, NJ) led Vassar with four goals and an assist. Alessandra Fable (Orlando, FL) tallied three goals and Caeli Porrette (Stony Point, NY), Grace Goodwin-Boyd (Florence, MA) and Ashley Roberts (Bala Cynwyd, PA) each netted two.

After Westfield scored five unanswered to open the game, the Brewers chipped back in from two goals from Goodwin-Boyd at 20:30 and 16:01. The Owls' Marissa Nimeskern notched the unassisted score at 14:56 to make it 6-2. Scores from Pushie and Porrette lessened the lead to 6-4 at 10:37, but Westfield responded off the draw to score 18 seconds later. The Brewers and Owls traded a pair of goals, but Vassar heated up in the final five minutes, closing the half on a 3-0 run to tie the game 8-8.

Westfield cut into the Vassar streak at 25:16 in the second to retake the lead. The Brewers went on another 3-0 run soon after with scores from Pushie, Fable and Melanie Silverman (Southbury, CT) to go up 11-9. At 7:54, Fable netted her third goal to give Vassar the 14-12 advantage. A quick burst from Westfield tied the game 14-14 with 37 seconds remaining to force overtime.

Westfield won the draw in the first overtime and the Owls made the first two shot attempts. Freshman goalkeeper Jackie Molloy (Buffalo Grove, IL) made a clutch save at 1:15 to keep Vassar alive. Goodwin-Boyd made one last shot on goal with four seconds, but the Owls' goalkeeper hung in tough.

The Brewers took the draw in the third, and quick shots from Goodwin-Boyd and Porrette kept the pressure on the Westfield defense. After a failed clear and turnover from Westfield, Adele MacEwen (Beverly, MA) scooped up the groundball at 1:34. The ball found its way to Tessa Waters (Skokie, IL) who picked up MacLeod for the final score.

Roberts led the Brewers with six draw controls, while MacLeod had five. Molloy had a team-high five groundballs, while Porrette had four and Tillie Newcomb (Denver, CO), Pushie and MacEwen each had three. Porrette was a key factor in the Vassar defense as well, causing five turnovers.

Molloy started the entire game in net, making eight saves.
