Mavericks crush Wolves en route to victory

Strong pitching and situational hitting leads Medaille to a win


ROCHESTER, NY – The Mavericks traveled to Rochester, NY Monday afternoon to take on the Keuka Wolves in a non-conference matchup. The game would be a single nine inning game. Entering play the Mavs sported a record of (8-6) overall and (2-0) in conference.

Steven Hostinsky (Rochester Hills, MI, Stoney Creek) got the call on the mound for Medaille. The Mavs wasted no time getting down to work in this one. Connor Priester (North Tonawanda, NY, North Tonawanda) drew a leadoff walk to start the top of the first. He advanced to second on a throwing error and advanced to third on a Dominick Teoli (Niagara Falls, NY, St. Joe's) single. Ryan Wojcinski (North Tonawanda, NY, Cardinal O'Hara) came up next and singled home Priester. Teoli also scored on the play due to an error by the Keuka right fielder. After the first inning of play the Mavs led (2-0).

In the top of the second Sal Carroccia (Lackawanna, NY, St. Francis) reached base on an error. He advanced to second on a passed ball and was moved over to third by Tom Lunghino (Buffalo, NY, Kenmore West). Paul Barker (Niagara Falls, NY, Niagara Falls) came up next and he singled home Carroccia. Connor Priester was up next and he was hit by a pitch. Dominick Teoli then singled which scored Barker from second and advanced Priester to third. Priester promptly swiped home and put the Mavs up (5-0) after just two innings of play.

Not satisfied, the Mavs were back at it in the top of the third. Shawn Filas (Hamburg, NY, Hamburg)
walked and was advanced to second on a Carroccia single. Lunghino came up next and he singled to load the bases. Priester drew a walk and Filas came in to score. The Keuka second baseman committed an error on the next at-bat and allowed Carroccia to score from third. Teoli was up next and he singled, scoring Priester and Lunghino. After the top of the third the Mavs led (9-0).

Keuka scored (2) runs on (3) hits and left (3) on base in the bottom half of the third inning. The Mavs still held a commanding (9-2) lead after the third.

In the top of the fourth inning the Mavs got started with a Filas single. Carroccia was up next and he singled, advancing Filas to second. Tom Lunghino grounded out to the second baseman but he committed an error and all hands were safe. Barker was up next and he hit a sacrifice fly which scored Filas from third. Priester reached on an error but Carroccia was cut down at the plate. After the Mavs half of the fourth, they led Keuka (10-2).

Jared McStine (Endicott, NY, Union-Endicott) got the top of the fifth started with a single. Teoli was up next and he was hit by a pitch. McStine was thrown out at third on a bunt attempt by Wojcinski. Greg Power (Hicksville, NY, Hicksville) grounded out but reached on another Keuka error. In the process Wojcinski scored and Teoli was thrown out at home. Filas singled and scored Power, while Filas advanced to second on the throw. Carroccia doubled next and scored Filas. The Mavs led (13-2) after the top of the fifth inning.

The Mavs threatened in the bottom of the eight with the bases loaded but they were unable to capitalize. 

Keuka was able to get two runs across in the bottom of the eight but the Mavs still held a commanding (13-4) lead. 

The Mavs emerged victorious in this one by a score of (13-4). Steve Hostinsky picks up the win today, tossing (6) innings and only giving up (2) runs. 

Teoli went (3-5) with (3) RBIs on the day. Barker added (2) RBIs of his own while Filas and Priester each scored (3) runs. 

With the win the Mavs improve to (9-6) on the year. 

The Mavs will be back in action Wednesday when they take on Alfred State at Canisius College. First pitch is set for 3 PM.
