Farmingdale, N.Y. - Farmingdale State senior pitcher David Otero Jr. (Shelton, Conn.) threw a complete game shutout in the 3-0 game one victory over Old Westbury this afternoon. The FSC baseball team fell in game two, 4-3, and now stand at 13-8 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
Scoreless in the top of sixth inning of the first game, Old Westbury (9-11-1, 3-5 Skyline) senior second baseman Jesse Russo (Westbury, N.Y.) hit a leadoff triple to center field. Otero Jr. forced the next two batters to groundout to second before a looping line drive into right field was snagged by sophomore second baseman Tyler Schrimpf (Miller Place, N.Y.) to end the inning and strand the runner at third.
The Rams got on the board in the seventh after junior shortstop Shawn Blasberg (Sound Beach, N.Y.) reached on an error, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior third baseman Nicholas Soriano (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and scored on a single to left field by Schrimpf to put FSC up 1-0.
With a runner on third and one out in the bottom of the eighth, an RBI groundout by senior catcher Kenneth Johntry (Yaphank, N.Y.) brought home pinch-runner Joey Barbuto (North Babylon, N.Y.) to put the Rams up by two. The next batter, Blasberg, hit a double down the left field line and Soriano followed with an RBI single to increase the FSC lead to 3-0.
After allowing a leadoff single in the ninth, Otero Jr. forced a double play and ground out to end the game and secure the Farmingdale State victory. Otero Jr. (2-1) only allowed five baserunners in the game to earn his second win of the season.
Soriano finished 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk and an RBI, while Blasberg was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Panthers pitcher Joe Sarni (Hicksville, N.Y.) took the loss after allowing two earned runs in 4.1 innings in relief.
In the bottom of the first inning of the second game, junior left fielder Anthony Gigante (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) walked, stole second, moved to third on a balk and was driven in on a single by sophomore right fielder Devin Caybasi (St. James, N.Y.) to give FSC an early 1-0 advantage.
Old Westbury tied the game on a wild pitch in the second inning and took the lead in the third on an RBI single by freshman third baseman Shaun Kaminski (Babylon, N.Y.).
The Panthers added another run in the fourth as Russo hit a triple to left center and scored on a balk to give Old Westbury a 3-1 lead.
Still down 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth, FSC junior right fielder Joseph Roche (Westbury, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Johntry and cut the deficit to just one.
Farmingdale State trailed 4-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh and tallied a run on an RBI single by Palumbo but freshman pitcher Joshua Cruz (Manhattan, N.Y.) retired the final two batters of the game as Old Westbury took game two, 4-3.
Palumbo led the way for the Rams in the second game with two hits, a walk and an RBI, while Geraci was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Rams freshman Brendan Haas (Wantagh, N.Y.) (0-1) was tabbed with the loss after allowing a run in one inning.
For the Panthers, Russo, freshman shortstop Mike Manetta (Farmingdale, N.Y.), junior designated hitter John Condon (Oceanside, N.Y.) and freshman catcher Michael Borsch (Flushing, N.Y.) each registered a hit and a run scored in the win.
Sophomore pitcher Steven Tellerias (Santo Domingo, DR) (1-0) earned the win, pitching 4.2 innings and only allowing three hits, while Cruz tallied his fourth save of the year.
