NEWPORT, R.I. – On Wednesday evening the Maritime men's lacrosse team visited non-conference Salve Regina. The Privateers were locked in a close battle throughout the contest but fell to their hosts by a slim 7-6 margin.

Maritime had five different goal scorers led by freshman Matt DeMeo (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) with two goals on the night. Four others had solo goals on the night seniors Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and Brett Daigle (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) tallied goals while sophomores Danny Connell (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and Ciaran McEnroe (Pearl River, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep (N.J.)) also had goals.

Defensively sophomore Patrick McAllister (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) had three caused turnovers to lead the effort, while Mark Buchner (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) had two caused turnovers and added his second consecutive six ground ball performance.

On faceoffs freshman Joey Manno (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) was 9-of-15 and picked up five ground balls. Freshman Bryan Keegan (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) tallied four ground balls, while senior goalkeeper Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) scooped up three ground balls. McNally also made 15 saves in the one-goal loss.

Salve Regina jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead but Maritime responded midway through the first quarter as DeMeo tallied his first of the night on an extra-man opportunity. Danahy scored again on the man-up chance with a pass coming from junior Brett Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley).

Holding the one-goal lead into the second quarter, the Seahawks tied the game at two before Maritime opened up another lead as McEnroe scored his first goal of the season. Salve Regina tied the score at three late in the second quarter, as the teams went into the locker room tied at three.

In the third quarter Salve Regina scored two unanswered goals, and then scored the opening two goals in the fourth quarter to take a 7-3 lead.

Connell scored his 24th goal of the season on a man-up chance, before DeMeo added his second goal of the contest. Daigle rounded out the scoring by tallying a goal in the final seconds to pull Maritime within one but it was not enough as the Seahawks inched out the victory.
