UAlbany Field Hockey Collects NFHCA Academic Honors Following 2015 Campaign

ALBANY, N.Y. – University at Albany field hockey was recognized in the classroom this week, after The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) announced three rounds of academic awards. Phil Sykes landed 12 student-athletes on the National Academic Squad and two to the list of Scholars of Distinction.

The Great Danes were tabbed for the NFHCA Division I National Academic Team after posting a GPA of 3.43 through the fall semester. To qualify, teams must have at least a 3.0. This is the third consecutive year Phil Sykes’s team has taken national academic honors, and the highest team GPA in those three seasons.

Division I field hockey players must accumulate a GPA of 3.30 to be selected as a National Academic Squad member. To be named a Scholar of Distinction, a student-athlete must earn a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher through the first semester of the academic year.

The Purple & Gold recorded its highest number of National Academic Squad members since 2012.

Of the UAlbany field, eight are repeat selections, including four-year academic standout Fiori Van Rijswijk. Juniors Paula Heuser, Molly Mariano, Maxi Primus and Taylor Schwoyer sealed the academic trifecta, while Anna Bottino, Kelsey Briddell and Emily White doubled up on NFHCA Academic Squad appearances.

No. 15 St. John Fisher Tops Buffalo States Women’s Lacrosse, 16-3

Biss Privitera and the Bengals will play Allegheny on Saturday

PITTSFORD, N.Y.— Nationally-ranked No. 15 St. John Fisher held visiting Buffalo State scoreless in the second half en route to a 16-3 victory in a non-conference game today at Growney Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Christina Krowel (Amsterdam/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) scored twice for the Bengals, and Alanna Herne (Tonawanda/Tonawanda) had a goal and an assist.
• After trading goals to open the game, the host Cardinals pushed the advantage to 8-2 before Krowel netted her second of the game to cut the deficit to five with 29 seconds left in the first half. 
• Fisher only surrendered a single shot off goal in the second frame, while converting on 8 of its 14 shots to pull away.
• The Cardinals finished with a 28-9 advantage in shots and also maintained a 16-10 edge in ground balls and a 12-8 margin in draw controls. 
• Buffalo State committed 20 turnovers, compared to 14 by Fisher.
• Elyse Stark (Lido Beach/Long Beach) played the complete game in goal for the Bengals, finishing with eight saves.

FOR THE FOES

• Jordan Johnson led 10 Fisher goal-scorers, tallying four goals and four assists. 
• Kelsie Schindler, Chrissy Cook and Kaitlyn Agedal added two goals apiece.
• Haley Peets needed to make just three saves in goal for the win.

Oswego State Season Opener Comeback Falls Just Shy

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's lacrosse team opened its 2016 season with a close 9-7 loss at Clarkson University on Wednesday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field. Clarkson improves to 1-1 with the win while the Lakers go to 0-1.

Oswego outscored the Golden Knights 5-4 in the second half, including the game's final three tallies, but were unable to overcome a 5-2 halftime deficit. Clarkson scored the contest's first two goals before Lindsey Eggers found the back of the net off an Esther Gabriel assist. The two squads then traded goals, with Oswego's coming on an unassisted Briana Kimble notch, making it 3-2 with 11:52 left in the first half. Clarkson would find two more goals before the break to take the 5-2 advantage into the locker room.

Panthers Hold Off Orange, 72-71

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Syracuse came up short against Pittsburgh 72-71, despite diminishing a 12-point Panther lead in the final four minutes of the contest on Wednesday afternoon in the second round of the ACC Tournament at the Verizon Center.

A 7-0 run by Pitt in a span of less than a minute gave the Panthers a 12-point lead approaching the four-minute mark, resulting in an Orange timeout, 66-54. The Orange came bouncing back, as freshman Malachi Richardson registered his second three of the game at the 3:14 mark to make it a seven-point game. A 3-pointer by grad student Michael Gbinije brought it within four with 2:31 left, 68-64.

A big dunk by Gbinije tied it up at 68 with two minutes left, and the two teams proceeded to hold each other scoreless for almost a minute before Pitt got back on board with a layup and a jumper with 22 seconds left, 72-68. Four seconds later, Gbinije made it a one-point game with his fourth three of the contest, 72-71. The score remained the same heading into the final seconds, as a last-second three by grad student Trevor Cooney fell short, finalizing a one-point victory for Pitt.

ALBANY, N.Y. – The 2015-16 America East regular season co-champions will meet at the SEFCU Arena to determine the league’s champion as 1-seed UAlbany and 2-seed Maine battle on Friday, March 11th at 4:30 p.m. on ESPNU.  The winner earns the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

The game will be nationally televised on ESPNU and WatchESPN with Eric Frede and Katie Smith on the call.  In addition, the game will be broadcast on radio in the Albany area on WOFX Fox Sports 980 with Rodger Wyland on the play-by-play.

Tickets for the America East title game are $40 for courtside seats, $30 for chairbacks, $25 bleachers and $10 for kid bleachers. 

UAlbany and Maine split the regular season title with each going 15-1 in America East play.

UAlbany, the four-time defending America East Tournament champion, defeated Vermont and Binghamton to earn the title game berth, standing at 26-4 overall.  Maine, in its first America East title game since 2004, had wins over New Hampshire and Stony Brook to enter Friday at 26-7 overall.

Raiders slip past Statesmen 7-6

GENEVA, N.Y.—Colgate University senior midfielder Cam Williams scored the only goal of the fourth quarter to give the Raiders a 7-6 lead they would not relinquish to Hobart College in non-conference lacrosse action on Boswell Field this afternoon. Colgate improved to 3-2 on the year, while the Statesmen slipped to 2-3.

Williams was the only player in the game to score more than once, finishing with two goals. First-year attackman Sam Cleveland added a goal and two assists for a game-high three points. Junior midfielder Jack Stebbins had a goal and an assist. Junior goalie Brandon Burke made nine saves to earn the win.

Six different Hobart players scored in the contest. Junior attackman Sean Donnelly led the Statesmen with two points on a goal and an assist. Junior defenseman Arik Andreen posted a career-high five caused turnovers, one shy of the Hobart game record set by Reid Rosello against Colgate on March 6, 2012. Junior defenseman Grant Soucy picked up a game and career-high six ground balls. Junior goalie Jackson Brown stopped 11 of the 18 shots he faced for a season-high .611 save percentage.

The final team stats were virtually even down the line. Hobart had the edge in shots (38-34), ground balls (28-25), and clears (83%-75%). Colgate had the advantage in faceoffs (9-8) and turnovers (14-15).

Colgate jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one quarter of play. Sophomore attackman Chase Wittich opened the scoring with a point blank shot from the left side of the cage just a minute into the game. Three minutes later, junior midfielder Mark Darden evened the score, rifling home an extra-man goal off a feed from Donnelly. Stebbins and Williams scored inside the final two minutes of the opening frame to stake the visitors to the largest lead of the game for either side.

The second quarter was a mirror image of the first. Senior midfielder Gavin Llewellyn scored in the opening minute with sophomore attackman Anthony Abbadessa countering a few minutes later. First-year attackman Chris Aslanian and junior midfielder Max Romm scored late goals to tie the game at 5 heading into halftime.

In the third quarter, Cleveland put Colgate back in front, but just over a minute later, junior attackman Frank Brown tied the game at 6. After killing off a delay of game penalty, Hobart managed to regain possession and spent close to three minutes in the attacking zone. The Statesmen got off six shots during that time, missing the cage four times, hitting the post once, and Burke stopped the final attempt. Hobart grabbed the ground ball off the rebound, but turned it over. The Statesmen got it back with a successful ride and Donnelly scored off an assist from sophomore defenseman William Locke for a 6-5 lead with about five minutes to go in the quarter. Colgate senior midfielder Tyler Rigo scored with 10 seconds left in the frame to send the teams into the fourth quarter tied at 6.

Burke shutout Hobart in the final 15 minutes, making four saves. Jackson Brown made three stops in that time period, but Williams snuck one past him with 8:11 remaining. The Statesmen got off five shots down the stretch, but they were unable to solve Burke.

Hobart begins at three-game road trip at Georgetown on Saturday, March 12. The opening faceoff is scheduled for noon.

Purchase College Men's Tennis Drops Home Opener to Baruch

Purchase, NY – Senior standout Joseph Troop (Yonkers, NY) highlighted the Purchase College men's tennis team's home opener with a win over Lewis Pena at No. 2 singles, 6-7, 7-5 (10-8).  The Panthers fell to the visiting Bearcats, 7-2.

The non-conference loss dropped the Panthers' overall record to 2-2.  Baruch improves to 1-1 on its season.

Purchase's other win came at No. 1 doubles when the duo of Troop and Riley Damerell (JR/Rochester, NY) earned an 8-4 victory over Pena and Hugo Castalan.

The Bearcats went on to tally wins at second and third doubles, and later won four of the five singles matches leading them to victory.

UAlbany Women’s Golf Wins Lonnie Barton Title By 18 Strokes

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – In the first tournament of the 2016 spring season, the University at Albany women’s golf team captured the title at the Lonnie Barton Invitational played at the LPGA International Hills Course. The Great Danes placed first out of 10 competing teams, shooting 323 on Monday and 314 on Tuesday for a final score of 637. St. John’s (655) placed second, followed by Siena (656), Sacred Heart (667) and Fairfield (677) in the top five.

"It is always nice to be able to come to Florida and to win our first tournament of the spring season after not having hit a golf ball on grass for just about five months,” said Head Coach Colleen Cashman-McSween. “It says a lot about this team’s hard work and dedication in the off-season and during the indoor practice season.”

Sophomore Annie Songeun Lee paced UAlbany with a second-place overall finish, shooting 79-75—154.

“I'm very proud of Annie on her second-place finish and she seems to have started the spring on the same foot she left off on in the fall,” said Cashman-McSween. “Unfortunately, our number two player couldn't tee it up this week due to an injury, so this truly was a team effort.”

Junior Rosalee Hearns tied for sixth with a 159 (80-79), followed by senior Yoorim Kang (82-81—163) who tied for 11^th in the 49-athlete field. Freshman Natalie Yamamoto (82-85—167) placed 15^th, while junior Nicolette Darois (90-79—169) rounded out UAlbany’s lineup.

“Anytime you can come out of the winter without being outside and win a big event it is pretty exciting. I'm very proud of them,” said Cashman-McSween.

Up next, the Great Danes compete in the Bearcats’ Spring Classic in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., March 25-27.

Sage College Softball Drops Florida Openers

CLERMONT, FL – Sophomore Alexa Silk (Freehold, NY/Greenville) went 4-7 with two doubles and three runs, but it wouldn't be enough as Sage softball dropped their season openers to SUNY-Potsdam and Saint Joseph's (Me.) 10-9 and 6-0 respectively.

The Gators got off to an early start in game one with Potsdam when Katy Rimawi (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) hit a one out double down the left-field line in the top of the second for Sage's first hit of the game. Rimawi was hit home on a Jen Onwe (Tarrytown, NY/Sleepy Hollow) double to left center to put Sage up 1-0 going into the bottom of the second.

The Bears responded immediately in the bottom of the second with a leadoff solo homer by Katie Marsman to right center to tie the game 1-1. With a runner on second and one out on the board, left fielder Allison Ford (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) made the throw to home to get Alexis Lerman out at the plate and prevent the go-ahead run for Potsdam.

In the top of the third, Ford hit a single to right center to bring Silk home and put the Gators up 2-1.

Oswego State Men's Tennis Suffers First Loss of Campaign

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the 2015-16 campaign with a 5-4 loss at Houghton College on Tuesday afternoon in Kerr-Pegula Field House. With the loss, the Lakers drop to 5-1 while the Highlanders improve to 2-3.

Three of Oswego's four match wins came from Sam McGrath and Alex McCarthy. The duo paired for the only Laker win in doubles competition, defeating their counterparts 8-2 in the first slot.

In singles competition, McGrath claimed the number-one spot with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Chase Rangel of Houghton. Following in his teammate's footsteps, McCarthy captured a win at second singles, but had to come from behind to do so. McCarthy dropped the first set 2-6 before bouncing back 6-3, 6-1 to complete the comeback.

Oswego's final triumph came in the sixth-singles position, as Nick Retzkin downed the Highlander's Daniel Hammers 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.

Many of the Lakers' defeats were very close, as both second and third doubles earned five or more points and freshman Brian Manciocchi forced a third set at fifth singles before succumbing 6-0, 2-6, 6-4.

Oswego will look to jump back into the win column at 4 p.m. on Saturday when it hosts Elmira College. The Lakers defeated the Soaring Eagles during the first semester, collecting a 7-2 win on Sept. 23.

Sage Softball Falls in Florida Double-header

CLERMONT, FL – Alexa Silk (Freehold, NY/Greenville) hit an impressive .625 with four RBI's and two homeruns in a double-header loss to SUNY-Oneonta (7-1) and Wheaton (Ill.) (14-9).

Oneonta (5-1) got off to an early start in the first inning when Jamie Whittam pounded a grand slam over the outfield fence to put the Red Dragons up 4-0.

After a few innings of back-and-forth action, Jessica Adams (Nassau, NY/Columbia) belted a lead-off homerun in the top of the fourth to put Sage on the board. Oneonta responded when Cori McFall hit an RBI single to put the Red Dragons up 5-1 going into the fifth inning.

Purchase College Men's Volleyball Falls at John Jay

New York City, New York – The Purchase College men's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 non-conference match to John Jay College at the Doghouse Monday evening.  With a set scores of 28-26, 25-23 and 25-22, the Bloodhounds improve to 11-5 overall while the Panthers drop to 9-11 on the season.

John Jay jumped out to an early 7-1 lead but the Panthers fought back to tie it at eight apiece. With the Bloodhounds leading 12-10, Purchase scored five straight points to go up by three. Later on, the Panthers led 20-15 but John Jay bounced back on a 9-4 run to tie it 24-24. The Bloodhounds eventually took the first set, 28-26.

The visitors took the first four points of the second but the Bloodhounds cut the deficit to 7-6.

SUNY Old Westbury Women’s Lacrosse drives out Bard in 17-12 victory

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com)  SUNY Old Westbury women's lacrosse jumped ahead early and never looked back in their 17-12 season-opening road victory over the Bard Raptors (0-1) Tuesday evening from Tenney Stadium. It was the second-consecutive season-opening win for the Panthers who began their fourth season overall.

Natasha Treuman had a collegiate debut for the record books, with a program-record 10 goals on 11 shots, to go with a program-best 11 points.  She also powered the Panthers with seven draw controls, five ground balls, four caused turnovers and one assist.  Outside of Treuman, Danielle Weir and Taylor Guarneri each produced two goals, while Weir added seven ground balls.  Courtney Gallagher totaled four caused turnovers, three draw controls, one goal and one assist in addition to scooping up three ground balls to become the first Panther with 100 career ground balls.

Ashley Gugliuzzo (1-0) played all 60 minutes and had eight saves to earn Old Westbury's win.  Kaylynn Tran (0-1) stopped six shots in a complete-game effort to take the loss with 17 goals against her.

Sara Bey won the opening draw before netting the game's first goal to give Old Westbury a 1-0 lead just 15 seconds into play.  Treuman then found Weir at 27:52 to double the Panthers' advantage.  Casey Witte answered for Bard at 26:38 to slice the deficit in half.  Guarneri answered with back-to-back goals to put Old Westbury ahead, 4-1.  With 13:34 remaining, Treuman rattled the cage for her first goal, and closed out the half by scoring Old Westbury's final three goals for the 10-5 lead at intermission.

Weir opened up Old Westbury's second-half scoring with a goal 8:01 into the action.  LaChaye Allen found Treuman for her third goal of the second half at 12:28 to extend Old Westbury's lead to a game-high 14-6.  Marion Adams' goal at 11:51 ignited a 6-1 Raptor run to make it a three-score game (15-12) with 3:30 left.  Treuman tallied the Panthers' final six goals, including the game-winner at 20:35 with a free-position score.

In the end, Old Westbury held the advantage in shots (32-25), shots on goal (23-20) and ground balls (35-33).

Maritime Takes 8th and 11th Place at Old Dominion Open

NORFOLK, Va. – The Maritime Dinghy Sailing team opened the spring portion of its season this past weekend as the team took part in the Old Dominion Open, finishing the weekend in eighth and 11th positions out of the 18 teams on the final leaderboard.

The Tom Noble Team Race, scheduled to take place in Maryland was scratched due to a lack of wind the entire weekend. One complete round of team racing was not completed, leading to no scores at the event.

Maritime had a pair of teams submitted at the Old Dominion Open, Privateers 1 finished the weekend in eighth position with 201 points on the weekend, while Privateers 2 finished the weekend in 11th place with 241 points.

Speakers Announced for Syracuse University Men's Lacrosse Centennial Celebration

Less than four weeks remain until the Syracuse University men's lacrosse program hosts a special, one-night event to honor the first 100 years of the most storied program in collegiate lacrosse.

The Syracuse University Men's Lacrosse Centennial Celebration presented by Sedgwick Business Interiors and the 1979 Syracuse men's lacrosse team in memory of David Mulherin '79, will take place on Friday, April 1 at the Oncenter in downtown Syracuse. The special event is open to the public at a cost of $75 per adult and $25 per child. Those in attendance will have an opportunity to interact with lacrosse legends.

Hunt Seat Equestrian Team Ties for Fifth Place at Morrisville State Show

Morrisville, N.Y. - The SUNY Cobleskill hunt seat equestrian team posted a team total of 25 points to place tied for fifth overall in a 11 team field at the season's final regular season Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone 2 Region 3 show hosted by the Mustangs of Morrisville State College at their College Equestrian Center.

The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Saturday April 2^nd when they travel to Saratoga Springs, N.Y. to compete in 2016 IHSA Zone 2 Region 3 Finals hosted by Skidmore College at the Van Lennep Riding Center beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Maritime Men’s Lacrosse Powers Past Norwich for First Victory of 2016

HROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Men's Lacrosse team picked up its first win of the 2016 season as the Privateers defeated the Norwich Cadets by a score of 15-3 on Reinhart Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Privateers were led by sophomore T.J. Ragusa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), who netted three goals and added an assist for four points. Classmate Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) had a game-high five points as he registered a pair of goals and chipped in with three helpers.

Sophomore Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) picked up two goals and had one assist, while junior Joe Fusco (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) and sophomore Julias Diaz both added two goals apiece. Senior Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) had a goal and an assist, while leading the team with eight ground balls as he went 14-for-22 on his faceoff attempts.

No. 9 Shenandoah Tops Baseball in Series Finale

The City College of New York baseball team fell 12-0 in the series finale to No. 9 Shenandoah on Sunday afternoon.

Adrien Pena went four-for-four on the game as he led the Beavers on offense. He started his day with a single to left field in the second inning, but was unable to get around the bases. All four of Pena's hits were singles as he came up in the fourth, sixth and ninth inning for City.

In the third inning both Eric Giglio and Michael Siklas would get on base, but CCNY could not get them home. City had another chance in the fifth inning as Brendan Murphy and Siklas both reached base safely. It would be another two batters left on base for the Beavers.

Elmy Antonio recorded his first collegiate hit in the seventh inning. As they fought for a run, the Beavers would still be left scoreless.

The Hornets recorded 12 runs to take series sweep from City.

Anthony Cacchione pitched 4.0 innings giving up nine runs, five of which were earned. Matt Sola-Baker came in for 3.0 innings and gave up one hit and struck out one. Steven Giglio, who made his collegiate debut, pitched the final inning for CCNY. Giglio gave up three runs off of four hits.

City will travel to Hackettstown, New Jersey as they face Centenary College in a three-game series. First game of the series is Friday, March 12 at 3:30 p.m.

Herons edge Ithaca 6-3 for second straight win

GENEVA, N.Y. - The William Smith College tennis team collected a 6-3 win over Ithaca in Bristol Field House this afternoon. With the win, the Herons improve to 3-2 in dual matches this season.

William Smith swept doubles play to take a 3-0 lead in the overall match. Junior Hannah More and sophomore Michaelann Denton cruised to an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles, defeating Haley Kusak and Shayna Ginster. At No. 2, first-year Alex Greenberg and Katarina Kostovic posted an 8-4 victory. Sophomore Alex Cattie and first-year Connie Froass out lasted Ithaca's Mami Blumenthal and Maddie OVerholt 9-7 at No. 3 doubles.

First-year Sydney Ferry bested Jodi Grosberg 6-2, 7-6(7-4) to give the Herons a 4-0 lead in the match. More clinched the overall match for William Smith with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Kusak at No. 1 singles. This is the second time this season that More defeated Kusak, who entered the weekend with an 11-1 mark in singles play. Denton's second win of the day came at No. 2 singles. She defeated Caroline Dunn 6-2, 6-1.

William Smith will return to action on March 14 when the Herons play Springfield College in Orlando, Fla.

#24 Tennis Topped By #55 NC State

RALEIGH, N.C.- Freshman Gabriela Knutson picked up a win in both doubles and singles play for the No. 24 Syracuse women's tennis team, but it was not enough as the Orange fell to No. 55 North Carolina State by the final score of 5-2.

Knutson and teammate junior Valeria Salazar moved to 6-0 on the season in their doubles victory for Syracuse (8-3, 2-3 ACC). North Carolina State (8-3, 2-2 ACC) utilized five singles victories to defeat the Orange.

After sophomore Nicole Mitchell and freshman Maria Tritou were downed 6-0 to Bianca Moldovan and Joanna Nalborska, the Orange bounced back with two straight doubles wins to take the point. Graduate student Anna Shkudun and freshman Dina Hegab defeated Amanda Rebol and Claudia Wiktorin 6-4 before Knutson and Salazar won 6-4 over Martina Frantova and Tayla Stenta.

Knutson moved to 8-2 in singles play and put Syracuse up 2-0 with a two-set victory over Bianca
