HROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Men's Lacrosse team
picked up its first win of the 2016 season as the Privateers defeated
the Norwich Cadets by a score of 15-3 on Reinhart Field on Saturday
afternoon.
The Privateers were led by sophomore T.J. Ragusa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), who netted three goals and added an assist for four points. Classmate Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) had a game-high five points as he registered a pair of goals and chipped in with three helpers.
Sophomore Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) picked up two goals and had one assist, while junior Joe Fusco (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) and sophomore Julias Diaz both added two goals apiece. Senior Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) had a goal and an assist, while leading the team with eight ground balls as he went 14-for-22 on his faceoff attempts.
Junior Jack Johnson (Annandale, Va./Annandale), along with freshmen Patrick Fay (Nanuet,
N.Y./Nanuet) and Michael Petty (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber), each recorded their first career goals. Junior Corey Cristallo (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) notched one point for the Privateers as well with an assist in the fourth quarter.
In goal, sophomore Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) stopped 16 shots, while yielding the three Norwich goals through the first 45 minutes of play. Freshman Justin Weigold (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) made his collegiate debut and stopped a pair of shots in the first 6:04 of the fourth quarter, while sophomore Ian Ballou (Williamsburg, Va./Bruton) stopped five shots in the final 8:56 of regulation.
Maritime
jumped on the board just 2:28 into the game as Pellegrino scored the
game-opening goal off a pass from Ragusa. Fay scored his first career
goal, followed by the first in the career for Johnson to take a 3-0
lead. Fusco added his first goal of the game off a pass from Danahy to
give the Privateers a 4-0 advantage heading into the second quarter.
The
Privateers struck quickly with two goals in the opening 63 seconds of
the stanza, as Danahy and Diaz found the back of the net to put Maritime
ahead by six. Norwich finally got on the board with their first to pull
back within five at the 8:40 mark of the second quarter.
Fusco
and Diaz went back-to-back to give the Privateers eight goals on the
game. Norwich responded with one more to pull back within six at 8-2.
Pellegrino scored once, followed by two more from Ragusa to give
Maritime and 11-2 lead heading into the halftime break.
In the
third quarter, neither team was able to score until there was 5:42 left
in the period as Norwich scored their third and final goal of the
contest. Hayes then won the ensuing draw and rolled around the cage
before netting his first goal of the season to take a 12-3 lead. Ragusa
added another goal in the waning seconds of the third quarter to give
the Privateers a 10-goal lead at 13-3.
In the fourth, Petty
opened the scoring with his first career goal to give the Privateers a
11-goal lead with 13:56 left in the game. Danahy capped off the scoring
with his fifth of the season as he took a pass from Cristallo to send
Maritime to a 15-3 score.
Maritime (1-1) will head into the
Maritime Cup off this afternoon's victory; the Privateers will take on
host Mass. Maritime on Friday, March 11 at 5 p.m., before taking on
Maine Maritime at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
Norwich (0-3)
will continue its season-opening road trip when the team travels to take
on Curry College on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
