Maritime Scores Extra-Inning Walk-Off Win Over Manhattanville

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – After building up a 3-0 lead early in the game the Maritime baseball team went to extra innings at home on Tuesday evening and knocked off the Manhattanville Valiants by the score of 4-3 on a walk-off wild pitch.
 
Freshman Matt Eng (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood), who was pinch running for sophomore Jake Vera (Plainview, N.Y./Bethpage) scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning on a wild pitch by Manhattanville to give the Privateers their 15th win of the season.
 
Sophomore Skylar Graff (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) picked up the win in relief after tossing a scoreless top half of the 10th inning. Sophomore Matthew Paghidas (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) got the start and got through four innings while allowing three hits and striking out four. Freshman Kyle Peterson (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) tossed three innings of two-hit ball, before freshman Kevin Dunn (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) was touched up for the three Valiant runs. Junior Matthew Buckshaw (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings with a pair of strikeouts.

Deleva Sets Pair of Records, Reaches 100 Career Points in Tuesday Loss

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Junior Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) became just the second play in Maritime women's lacrosse history to reach 100 career points on Tuesday afternoon as she had eight points in Tuesday's 21-16 loss to Old Westbury from Panther Park on Long Island.
 
With her eight-point performance Deleva now has 106 career points, joining Catherine Brady '12 as the only two players to reach the century mark for career points. In addition to her career milestone, Deleva also set a pair of single-season records as she became the first player in program history to score 50 points in a season, while also breaking her own mark of 36 goals in one season that she had set as a freshman in 2016.
 
Deleva now has 55 points this season to go along with her 38 goals. Earlier this season she had already set the single-season assist record and currently has 17 for her season while extending he already existing career record to 30 career assists.

Maritime Sweeps Staten Island in Home Doubleheader

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – On Friday the Maritime baseball team picked up a pair of wins, knocking off the Staten Island Dolphins on the Reinhart Baseball Field. The Privateers picked up the win in game one by a score of 15-3, before dropping the Dolphins in game two by the score of 6-2.
 
Maritime was led on the hill by its starters as freshman Dylan Clausen (Southold, N.Y./Southold) got the start in game one and went six innings as he struck out 10 batters and allowed just two runs on three hits over his outing. Junior A.J. Ammirati (Queens, N.Y./Construction)got the start in game two and scattered five hits while allowing two runs to go along with six strikeouts.
 
Junior Sean McQuail (Middle Village, N.Y./Cathedral Prep) followed Clausen in game one and struck out one batter over his one inning of work, while sophomore Skylar Graff (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) limited the damage as he came on in a bases-loaded situation and retired four Dolphins to pick up his third save of the season.

Women’s Lacrosse Falters in Road Game at Mount St. Mary

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Maritime women's lacrosse fell 19-11 on Wednesday night to the Mount St. Mary Knights in Skyline Conference play.  
 
Maritime was led by freshman Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip), and juniors Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) and Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park). Wright led the Privateers in goals and points, scoring four goals and giving out three assists, making that seven points for the game. Deleva netted three goals while assisting on two more and Pfundstein scored three goals also.
 
Pfundstein and Wright took turns taking the draw controls on the night with Pfundstein winning five and Wright winning three. On the defensive side five different Privateers caused a turnover on the night.
 
Wright led Maritime in ground balls picking up six for the game. Junior Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) added four, while junior Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) had two. In the cage, sophomore Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) made 11 saves while also picking up two ground balls.
 
Maritime scored first on the night as Deleva netted her first goal at the 27:23 mark off the assist from Wright. A little over three minutes later, the Privateers went up 2-0 thanks to a goal from Pfundstein thanks to an assist from Deleva. Mount St. Mary answered with the next four goals to take the lead 4-2.
 
At the 10:00 mark, Wright scored her first goal of the night off a free-position shot to make the score 4-3. After a goal from Mount St. Mary to put the Knights up 5-3, Deleva netted her second goal of the game to cut the lead to one.
 
Maritime trailed 6-4 with 4:34 left in the first half when Pfundstein connected on a shot to score her second of the night and then Wright scored at the 3:53 mark to tie the game at six. Mount St. Mary scored the next four goals as the Privateers trailed 10-6 at the break.
 
To begin the second half, both teams had opportunities to score with Maritime getting two shots on goal as well as Mount St. Mary. At the 24:23 mark Mount St. Mary scored making the score 11-6. After goals from both teams, the score was now 12-7 with just under 22 minutes remaining. Maritime made a small run scoring the next two goals, one from Pfundstein, the other from Murphy, to cut the lead to three.
 
The small rally was not enough to get back in the game as Mount St. Mary went on to win, 19-11.
 

Women’s Lacrosse Suffers Conference Loss to St. Joseph’s (L.I.) on Saturday Afternoon

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Maritime women's lacrosse fell 18-9 to the St. Joseph's (L.I.) Golden Eagles in Skyline Conference play on Saturday afternoon on Reinhart Field.
 
Maritime was led by junior Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) as she scored a team-high five goals while handing out one assist. Classmate Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) scored two goals for the Privateers and junior Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) scored one goal along with two assists on the day.  Freshman Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) scored the other lone goal for Maritime.
 
Three Privateers had at least five draw controls with Wright leading the way with six. Pfundstein and Deleva each recorded five draw controls. Senior Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) and junior Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) anchored the Maritime defense with three caused turnovers a piece. Murphy added two while four other Privateers had one each.
 
Salatto led Maritime in the ground ball game with four while Murphy, Wright and Pfundstein picked up three ground balls each. In her first ever start in goal, senior Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) made 13 saves and picked up one ground ball.
 
St. Joseph's (L.I.) scored first on the day as they went up 1-0 at the 26:55 mark and then scoring again two minutes later to go up 2-0. Maritime answered with a goal at the 22:59 mark from Deleva making the score 2-1. St. Joseph's (L.I.) scored one goal to extend the lead to 3-1 but Pfundstein responded with two straight goals for the Privateers to tie the game up at three.
 
After two goals from the Golden Eagles, Maritime came back with a goal from Murphy at the 4:08 mark of the first half. St. Joseph's (L.I.) would score one more before the end of the first half as Maritime trailed the Golden Eagles 6-4 at the break.
 
Just 14 seconds into the second half, Wright made a push to the goal all by herself as she scored, making the score 6-5. St. Joseph's (L.I.) would score the next three goals to push the lead up to four.
 
At the 20:38 mark, Deleva scored on an extra-man opportunity, cutting the lead to three, 9-6. St. Joseph's (L.I.) would score the next two goals, followed by another Maritime goal from Deleva to make the score 11-7.
 
The Privateers could not hold the Golden Eagles in check as St. Joseph's (L.I.) would go on to win by a final score of 18-9.
 
Maritime (2-6, 0-3 Skyline) will be back in action on Tuesday April 10th when they visit Old Westbury at Panther Park in a Skyline Conference matchup starting at 4 p.m.
 
St. Joseph's (L.I.) (3-5, 1-0 Skyline) will continue Skyline Conference play at home Tuesday April 10th, when they host Purchase at Danzi Stadium beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Sailing Opens Spring Slate with Fourth Place Finish at Georgetown Team Race

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Maritime sailing team opened the spring portion of their 2017-18 season as the team took part in the Georgetown Team Race on the Potomac River. Maritime took fourth place in the six-team field, finishing the weekend with a 2-3 overall record aboard the fleet of Z420s and FJ boats.

The first day of competition was not contested due to poor weather conditions. However, the team returned to action on Sunday afternoon for one round robin against the other five teams in the field.

Maritime opened the weekend against Navy and picked up the 1-3-6 win against the Midshipmen. The Privateers improved to 2-0 with a 1-2-3 sweep over UPenn as the Privateers took care of the Quakers. The Privateers fell in their next three flights with losses to Cornell, Hobart/William Smith and Old Dominion, dropping their record to 2-3.

Old Dominion also finished the first round robin with a 2-3 overall record, forcing a tiebreaker round between the Privateers and the Monarchs. The Privateers picked up the 1-2-5 victory over the Monarchs to capture fourth place at the event.

Maritime had a full complement of sailors at the event with seniors Zach Hill (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and Timmy Montera (Bellmore, N.Y./Bellmore JFK) as their first entry. Junior John Lawless (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) returned to the team after a semester away in the fall, and teamed up with sophomore Aidan Molesky (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck). Juniors Kyle Comerford (Annapolis, Md/Annapolis) and Skye Miller (Congers, N.Y./Clarkstown North) rounded out the Maritime lineup at the event.

Earning the victory at the event was Hobart/William Smith with a 4-1 record, while Cornell took second at 4-1, but fell in a tiebreaker with HWS. Navy took third at 3-2, while Old Dominion had a 2-3 record for fifth place, followed by UPenn in sixth at 0-5.

Maritime returns to competition next weekend with a pair of events as the team will take part in the Wollum Team Race hosted by Christopher Newport, as well as the St. Mary's (Md.) Team Race in Maryland.

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – On Wednesday evening, the Maritime Men's Lacrosse team defeated the Mount St. Vincent Dolphins by the score of 12-4 on Reinhart Field.

The game was the final home game of the season for the Privateers, and prior to the game Maritime recognized the eight members of the 2016 senior class playing in their final games on the field. The senior class featured Jonathan Strezenec (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun), Peter Rooney (Long Beach, N.Y./Chaminade), Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin), Kevin Connolly (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon), Jordan Rose (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity), Morgan Litwin (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon), Michael Brunk (Glenwood Springs, Colo./Glenwood Springs), and John Hannon (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset).

SUNY Maritime Senior Sendoff Sweetened with Walk-Off Home Run in Game Two vs. Old Westbury

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Baseball team is heading back to the playoffs courtesy of a bottom of the seventh inning walk-off home run by sophomore Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville), as the Privateers knocked off the Old Westbury Panthers in game two by a 6-5 score. Earlier in the day, Old Westbury had taken game one by an 18-6 score.

With the victory in game two, the Privateers clinched a berth in the Skyline Conference Tournament and are currently standing in fourth place heading into the final weekend of the year. The Privateers can finish as high as second if the team can sweep Farmingdale; help would also be needed from Mount St. Vincent against Old Westbury, as well as from Purchase taking on St. Joseph's (LI) next weekend.

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Men's Lacrosse team fell to the Farmingdale Rams, 9-4, on Saturday afternoon in a Skyline Conference contest on Reinhart Field.

SUNY Maritime Baseball Overwhelms Yeshiva in Skyline Doubleheader Sweep

PALISADES PARK, N.J. – On Friday, the Maritime Baseball team swept the Yeshiva Maccabees from the Palisades Park Baseball Field in New Jersey. The Privateers took game one by the score of 11-1 before recording an 8-3 victory in the second game.

On the day, sophomore Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) led the team with six hits, and four RBIs, while seven other Privateers all had multi-hit afternoons. Sophomore Joe DiLeo (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) went 4-for-5, while classmate Stephen Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) with 5-for-8, and Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) went 5-for-9 on the day as both he and DiLeo led the team with three runs scored apiece.

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The Maritime Women's Lacrosse team fell to the Merchant Marine Mariners by the score of 14-9 at Brooks Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Maritime was led by junior Jane Quinn (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) with four goals, while freshman Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) added two goals on the contest. Sophomore Andrea Mitchell (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush), and freshmen Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) and Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) all scored during the game as well.

Privateer Baseball Splits Action versus St. Joseph’s (LI)

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – On Sunday afternoon, the Maritime Baseball team took to the Reinhart Baseball Field against the St. Joseph's (LI) Golden Eagles. In game one, the Privateers fell by a 5-1 score, but bounced back in game two for a 6-5 victory.

At the plate, junior Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) led the Privateers with two RBIs, while sophomore Connor Alwan (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) also drove in a run on his lone hit of the afternoon. McLaughlin along with senior Kevin Monahan (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur), sophomore Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and Joe DiLeo (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann), and freshman Joe Scerra (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) all had multi-hit days against the Golden Eagles.

Maritime Takes 8th and 11th Place at Old Dominion Open

NORFOLK, Va. – The Maritime Dinghy Sailing team opened the spring portion of its season this past weekend as the team took part in the Old Dominion Open, finishing the weekend in eighth and 11th positions out of the 18 teams on the final leaderboard.

The Tom Noble Team Race, scheduled to take place in Maryland was scratched due to a lack of wind the entire weekend. One complete round of team racing was not completed, leading to no scores at the event.

Maritime had a pair of teams submitted at the Old Dominion Open, Privateers 1 finished the weekend in eighth position with 201 points on the weekend, while Privateers 2 finished the weekend in 11th place with 241 points.

Maritime Men’s Lacrosse Powers Past Norwich for First Victory of 2016

HROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Men's Lacrosse team picked up its first win of the 2016 season as the Privateers defeated the Norwich Cadets by a score of 15-3 on Reinhart Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Privateers were led by sophomore T.J. Ragusa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), who netted three goals and added an assist for four points. Classmate Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) had a game-high five points as he registered a pair of goals and chipped in with three helpers.

Sophomore Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) picked up two goals and had one assist, while junior Joe Fusco (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) and sophomore Julias Diaz both added two goals apiece. Senior Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) had a goal and an assist, while leading the team with eight ground balls as he went 14-for-22 on his faceoff attempts.
