Women’s Lacrosse Suffers Conference Loss to St. Joseph’s (L.I.) on Saturday Afternoon

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Maritime women's lacrosse fell 18-9 to the St. Joseph's (L.I.) Golden Eagles in Skyline Conference play on Saturday afternoon on Reinhart Field.
 
Maritime was led by junior Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) as she scored a team-high five goals while handing out one assist. Classmate Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) scored two goals for the Privateers and junior Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) scored one goal along with two assists on the day.  Freshman Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) scored the other lone goal for Maritime.
 
Three Privateers had at least five draw controls with Wright leading the way with six. Pfundstein and Deleva each recorded five draw controls. Senior Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) and junior Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) anchored the Maritime defense with three caused turnovers a piece. Murphy added two while four other Privateers had one each.
 
Salatto led Maritime in the ground ball game with four while Murphy, Wright and Pfundstein picked up three ground balls each. In her first ever start in goal, senior Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) made 13 saves and picked up one ground ball.
 
St. Joseph's (L.I.) scored first on the day as they went up 1-0 at the 26:55 mark and then scoring again two minutes later to go up 2-0. Maritime answered with a goal at the 22:59 mark from Deleva making the score 2-1. St. Joseph's (L.I.) scored one goal to extend the lead to 3-1 but Pfundstein responded with two straight goals for the Privateers to tie the game up at three.
 
After two goals from the Golden Eagles, Maritime came back with a goal from Murphy at the 4:08 mark of the first half. St. Joseph's (L.I.) would score one more before the end of the first half as Maritime trailed the Golden Eagles 6-4 at the break.
 
Just 14 seconds into the second half, Wright made a push to the goal all by herself as she scored, making the score 6-5. St. Joseph's (L.I.) would score the next three goals to push the lead up to four.
 
At the 20:38 mark, Deleva scored on an extra-man opportunity, cutting the lead to three, 9-6. St. Joseph's (L.I.) would score the next two goals, followed by another Maritime goal from Deleva to make the score 11-7.
 
The Privateers could not hold the Golden Eagles in check as St. Joseph's (L.I.) would go on to win by a final score of 18-9.
 
Maritime (2-6, 0-3 Skyline) will be back in action on Tuesday April 10th when they visit Old Westbury at Panther Park in a Skyline Conference matchup starting at 4 p.m.
 
St. Joseph's (L.I.) (3-5, 1-0 Skyline) will continue Skyline Conference play at home Tuesday April 10th, when they host Purchase at Danzi Stadium beginning at 5:30 p.m.
