Stony Brook Knocks Off No. 16 Vermont in Double Overtime

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook men's lacrosse team knocked off No. 16 Vermont, 8-7, in double overtime at LaValle Stadium Saturday afternoon. Chris Pickel, Jr., was the hero for the Seawolves as he buried the game-winner from Jack Walsh early in the second period of extra time. Stony Brook moves to 5-7 on the year, 3-1 in league play, while Vermont now sits at 10-2 this season, 2-2 in the America East.
 
Nagle's Reaction
"It was a great, competitive lacrosse game," said head coach Jim Nagle. "That was the best games I've seen Michael [Bollinger] play, he was phenomenal, and Chris [Pickel] is a very confident kid that's never afraid to take that shot. We knew that they were a great team and that they would come in believing they could get the win, so our challenge to our guys was that we are just as competitive as this team."
 
Highlights

• Stony Brook jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, with sophomore Michael Bollinger (Holbrook, N.Y.) tallying five saves in the opening period. Vermont got on the board early in the second with a man-up goal in the opening seconds and added another with 8:30 remaining before the break to make it 3-2.
• Freshman Patrick Kaschalk (Windsor, Ontario) picked up his own rebound and brought the ball behind the cage to find sophomore Tom Haun (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) in close on the right side for the score.
• The Catamounts were able to add one more before halftime, but Stony Brook took a 4-3 lead into the break.
• Vermont put away a pair of goals early in the third period for its first lead of the day, and held the Seawolves scoreless to take a 5-4 lead into the fourth quarter.
• After another early goal by the Catamounts to start the new period, freshman Jack Walsh (Miller Place, N.Y.) found sophomore Wayne White (Huntington, N.Y.) for a man-up goal.
• Haun tied the game at six-all with 9:29 left in regulation, and Walsh was able to get a goal of his own on the cross-field feed from Haun to put the Seawolves back on top, 7-6.
• Vermont called a timeout with 3:05 on the clock and was able to tie the game with 2:39 to play. The Catamounts committed a shot-clock violation late to put the ball back in Stony Brook's possession, but the final attempt didn't connect.
• After a scoreless first overtime period sophomore Chris Pickel, Jr., (Bayport, N.Y.) decided the game as he fired in a pass from Walsh 1:13 into the second overtime for the victory.

 
Notes

• Bollinger tallied nine saves in the first half, en-route to a career-best 16-save performance.
• Haun notched the 19^th multi-point game of his career with two goals and an assist on the day.
• Walsh made it 10 straight games with a point after scoring once and adding two assists.
• The Seawolves' defense held Vermont to single-digits goals for just the second time this season, forcing the Catamounts, who rank among the top teams in the nation in shooting percentage, to shoot just 23-percent in the game. 
• The victory is the 16th over a ranked opponent in program history for Stony Brook and the first since topping then-No. 10 Brown on the road early last season. 
•  This was the first overtime game of the season for the Seawolves and their first multi-overtime game since topping Rutgers, 9-8, on the road in 2013.
