Late Surge for SUNY Maritime Women's Lacrosse Falls Short in Non-Conference Finale

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The Maritime Women's Lacrosse team fell to the Merchant Marine Mariners by the score of 14-9 at Brooks Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Maritime was led by junior Jane Quinn (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) with four goals, while freshman Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) added two goals on the contest. Sophomore Andrea Mitchell (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush), and freshmen Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) and Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) all scored during the game as well.

Defensively, senior Meghin Paczkowski (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) made 10 saves on the night in
goal, while she added one ground ball. Senior Caroline Reynolds (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) and Quinn both caused a pair of turnovers, while Mitchell and freshman Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) caused one each on the evening.

Pfundstein led the team with five ground balls, while Quinn was second on the team with four. Salatto added three loose ball pickups, junior Kelsey Ireland (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive), Deleva, Murphy and sophomore Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) all registered two ground balls apiece.

Merchant Marine jumped ahead by a 2-0 score, but Quinn netted her first of the night to trim the lead in half. After another Mariner goal, Pfundstein got on the board with her first of the evening, followed by a tally from Mitchell to tie the game at three. The Mariners closed out the half with five unanswered goals to take an 8-3 lead into the halftime break.

After the intermission, Deleva got the Privateers off on the right foot but Merchant Marine answered just three minutes later to regain a five-goal advantage. After Murphy scored her lone goal of the night, the Mariners rattled off five straight goals to take a 14-5 lead.

The Privateers took advantage of back-to-back free position chances as Quinn and Pfundstein scored to make the score 14-7. Quinn scored two more goals in the final 2:33 to cap off the scoring on the night as late Maritime rally fell just short.

Draw controls were even with Merchant Marine holding a small 13-12 advantage, while Maritime turned the ball over 14 times to Merchant Marine's 13.  Saves and ground balls were also close between the two sides, as Maritime was 8-for-14 on clears while Merchant Marine was 11-for-18.

Maritime (3-5, 1-1 Skyline) will return to Skyline Conference play this Saturday as the Privateers visit the Farmingdale Rams for a 12 p.m. start on Long Island.

Merchant Marine (4-3, 0-3 Landmark) will also return to conference play as Landmark action resume on Saturday at 1 p.m., when the Mariners play host to the Scranton Royals.
