Short Story: UAlbany defeated Stony Brook 5-2 on Sunday, which was the second conference win of the season for the Great Danes.

RECAP
The Great Danes defeated the Stony Brook Seawolves 5-2 in the third and final game of the weekend. In the second inning, Maranda Jimenez hit the first RBI single of the game, bringing Amelia Ely around to score. McKenzie Bump also hit an RBI single that brought Donna Conrad around to score the second run. Aliyah Wade scored the third and final run of the second inning when Chelsea Henige walked, advancing Wade to home plate.

The score remained 3-0 until the fourth inning when Stony Brook scored a run off of a walk that advanced the runner on third base home.

In the fifth inning, Sarah Petzold hit a home run, giving the Great Danes a three-run advantage once again.

Alexis Phillips scored the fifth and final run of the game for the Great Danes in the seventh inning. Stony Brook also scored a run in the seventh inning, but it was not enough to gain an advantage over UAlbany. The Great Danes won 5-2.

Short Story: The UAlbany baseball team suffered a series sweep at Maine over the weekend to fall to 1-5 in conference play.

Coach Mueller: “We didn’t do many things right, that’s for sure.  We came up here and played a good Maine team and had three tough starts.  We got off the gate poorly today, but we played from behind pretty much the whole weekend.  So we have to get back together, get back to the work bench, and get ready for next weekend.”

How it happened

• Maine got out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first
• UAlbany scored its lone run of the game in the top of the second to cut the lead to 4-1.  Ryan Hernandez, who hit a home run in each of yesterday’s games, led off the inning with a double down the left field line.  Next, Travis Collins hit a single to center that allowed Hernandez to advance to third.  Two batters later, Nick Kondo drew a walk to load the bases with one out.  With the bases loaded and two outs, Patrick Lagravinese drew a walk, forcing in Hernandez.
• Maine retook a four-run lead with one run in the bottom of the third
• Maine scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and four in the bottom of the sixth to take a 12-1 lead
• Maine added five runs in the bottom of the eighth to make the final score 17-1
• UAlbany was unable to mount a comeback attempt in the ninth, going down in order to end the game

Next: UAlbany will look to bounce back quickly with two midweek games, first on Tuesday, April 3 at Marist and then Wednesday, April 4 at LIU Brooklyn.  The Great Danes will host Hartford for three games starting next Saturday.

STIRE’S DOUBLE-DOUBLE NOT ENOUGH AS UALBANY MEN’S BASKETBALL EDGED IN NAILBITER AT YALE 59-55

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The UAlbany men’s basketball team pulled to within one late and had possession in the final 18 seconds but could not go ahead, narrowly falling at Yale 59-55 on Saturday afternoon.

UAlbany (4-4) was down six with five minutes to go at reigning Ivy League champion Yale (3-4), getting to within one point numerous times in the final minute, but could not go ahead.

“It was a good, solid basketball game against a well-coached team,” said UAlbany head coach Will Brown. “You had two teams that mirrored each other, and our guys did a good job to get in position to win down the stretch.”

UAlbany scored 32 points in the paint to Yale’s 18, but was edged in three-point shots 11-2.  As a team, UAlbany shot 44% from the field and 90% from the free throw line.

Greig Stire finished with his second double-double of the season, picking up 13 points, off 5-6 shooting and 3-3 from the charity stripe, and a game-best 10 rebounds.  David Nichols led UAlbany in scoring with 14 points and assists with five.

For Yale, each Anthony Dallier and Alex Copeland each tallied 15 points, with the former adding five assists and four rebounds.

Stire led the offense in the opening possessions, backing into the paint for the first two baskets, then kicking out to Marqueese Grayson for the corner three for a 7-0 UAlbany advantage two minutes in.

Yale countered with a couple of three-point plays, then took the lead off a Sam Downey layup.  The two sides kept exchanging the lead, with Grayson hitting his second three-pointer on a kick-out to push UAlbany back ahead.  The defense held Yale without a field goal for over seven minutes, adding to the lead primarily with Travis Charles hitting three baskets, including a spin move and layup, to go up 22-11 with 8:16 left in the 1st.

UAlbany continued to defend against Yale shooting threes with its man-to-man defense.  With a couple of Anthony Dallier threes, Yale got to within a possession at 26-23 with under two minutes in the 1st.

UAlbany’s guards attacked the basket on its final couple of possessions, seeing Grayson get fouled and hit two free throws, then Nichols hit a layup down the baseline at the first half buzzer for a 30-23 advantage at the break.

The home team continued its three-point shooting, hitting a trio to pull to a tie in the opening three minutes of the half at 34-34.  UAlbany countered with scores on four straight possessions, including a steal and score from Nichols and four points from Mike Rowley, to go back up 42-34 with 13:45 left in the 2nd.

Yale continued to pick-and-pop as UAlbany kept defending, but could not build the lead.  Copeland hit a pair of threes off screens to tie the game at 44-44, then took the lead on a pair of one-hand floaters plus a couple of other baskets for a 50-44 Yale lead with 5:34 left.

UAlbany stopped Yale’s run with a layup and one by Stire.  Back and forth the teams traded points with the Great Danes continuing to get within one point, including on a steal and score by Nichols with 1:47 left.  The sides traded again, and UAlbany held on defense with Joe Cremo pulling down a rebound to give UAlbany possession down 56-55 with 18 seconds left.

UAlbany called a timeout, and Cremo got the ball as was fouled for a one-and-one.  His first attempt rimmed out, with Yale getting the rebound.  Yale sealed the game with free throws to take the victory 59-55.

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany men’s soccer team (5-3-2) hosted Syracuse University (8-2-1) on Bob Ford Field at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium on Tuesday night.  When the 90 minutes expired, the Great Danes had earned a signature win, dropping the fifth-ranked Orange by a score of 2-1.

“We felt like we created some good chances tonight,” said head coach Trevor Gorman.  “We had guys reacting to second balls, balls were dropping to them, and you need the ball to drop your way in any game.  Fortunately for us we found those two goals, and we had a couple other chances that we liked.”

UAlbany Softball Claims Series With 5-3 Win Over Maine

ALBANY, N.Y. – Coming from behind to score three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, the University at Albany softball team captured Sunday’s rubber game versus Maine, 5-3. With the victory, the Great Danes improved to 29-12 on the season and 9-1 in the America East, while the Black Bears fell to 19-17 overall and 7-4 in conference play.

“That was a great win for us today. Maine has great pitchers and they pretty much held our hitters in check all day yesterday,” said Head Coach Chris Cannata. “I’m really proud of the adjustments we made at the plate, and we stuck with our game plan all day. Devin battled today and came through big in some tough spots and our defense got some crucial outs when we needed them.”

HANOVER, N.H. – University at Albany women’s lacrosse (9-4, 4-0 AE) used a four-goal run mid-way through the second half to steal a 9-7 win at Dartmouth (6-7, 2-3 Ivy League) on Monday afternoon. The Great Danes have now won six of their last seven games leading into the conclusion of the regular season next Saturday.

The teams traded turnovers to start the game, but the Great Danes were the first to take advantage on an Alie Jimerson goal just 1:20 in. Dakotah Savitcheff forced a failed clear on the Big Green to set up Jimerson for the unassisted tally.

UAlbany Baseball Drops Mid-Week Game to St. John's, 20-3

ALBANY, N.Y.— Falling behind early 2-0, the University at Albany baseball team (10-19, 3-6) was unable to match St. John’s (17-11-1, 2-1) offensive output in their mid-week loss of 20-3.
 
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning, Kevin Donati hit a one out double to right field and scored after two past balled from St. John’s to put the Danes down by one.

The Red Storm responded in the top of the third inning with a seven-run inning, including a three-run home run from Jesse Berardi that cleared the center field wall, to put St. John’s up 9-1.

UAlbany Baseball Splits Doubleheader, Takes Series Over UMBC

ALBANY, N.Y. — Using momentum from yesterdays big 10-4 win, the University at Albany baseball team (10-18, 3-6) split Sunday’s doubleheader with UMBC (14-14, 5-3), with the Danes taking game one, 6-1 and dropping the second, 5-1.

The Great Danes were in control of game one from start to finish. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning, Matt Hinchy singled through the left side to bring home Will Miller. Evan Harasta followed with a single into left field that scored Kevin Donati from third, to put UAlbany up 2-0.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Garrett Longhurst hit a two-out single into right field and then Karson Canaday singled to the third baseman and was able to beat the throw.

UAlbany Field Hockey Collects NFHCA Academic Honors Following 2015 Campaign

ALBANY, N.Y. – University at Albany field hockey was recognized in the classroom this week, after The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) announced three rounds of academic awards. Phil Sykes landed 12 student-athletes on the National Academic Squad and two to the list of Scholars of Distinction.

The Great Danes were tabbed for the NFHCA Division I National Academic Team after posting a GPA of 3.43 through the fall semester. To qualify, teams must have at least a 3.0. This is the third consecutive year Phil Sykes’s team has taken national academic honors, and the highest team GPA in those three seasons.

Division I field hockey players must accumulate a GPA of 3.30 to be selected as a National Academic Squad member. To be named a Scholar of Distinction, a student-athlete must earn a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher through the first semester of the academic year.

The Purple & Gold recorded its highest number of National Academic Squad members since 2012.

Of the UAlbany field, eight are repeat selections, including four-year academic standout Fiori Van Rijswijk. Juniors Paula Heuser, Molly Mariano, Maxi Primus and Taylor Schwoyer sealed the academic trifecta, while Anna Bottino, Kelsey Briddell and Emily White doubled up on NFHCA Academic Squad appearances.

UAlbany Shereesha Richards Named to WBCA All-Region 1 Team, Nominated for All-America

2015-16 WBCA All-Region Honorees

ATLANTA – UAlbany senior forward Shereesha Richards has been honored on the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-Region 1 Team and has been nominated for the Coaches’ All-America Team.

Richards is the first-ever UAlbany player to be selected as an All-Region honoree.  She is the lone representative from the America East Conference and one of three players selected from a school that plays in the state of New York.

Richards earned her third straight America East Player of the Year honor after finishing first in the conference in scoring and second in rebounding.  After leading UAlbany to the America East Tournament title and the program’s first-ever victory in the NCAA Tournament in DI play, the Naismith Trophy Midseason 30 Team member forward finished shooting 55.8% with 23.4 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game.

The senior forward also earned a place on the America East All-Conference First Team and was the league’s player of the week five times.

Region 1 is made up of seven conferences that primarily play in the Eastern U.S.  The conferences are the America East, ACC, Atlantic 10, Ivy League, MAAC, Northeast and Patriot League.

In all, 52 student-athletes were selected as All-Region players among the five regions.  The 52 are now eligible to be on the 2016 WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches’ All-America Team, which will be announced on April 2^nd during the NCAA Final Four in Indianapolis.

ALBANY, N.Y. – The 2015-16 America East regular season co-champions will meet at the SEFCU Arena to determine the league’s champion as 1-seed UAlbany and 2-seed Maine battle on Friday, March 11th at 4:30 p.m. on ESPNU.  The winner earns the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

The game will be nationally televised on ESPNU and WatchESPN with Eric Frede and Katie Smith on the call.  In addition, the game will be broadcast on radio in the Albany area on WOFX Fox Sports 980 with Rodger Wyland on the play-by-play.

Tickets for the America East title game are $40 for courtside seats, $30 for chairbacks, $25 bleachers and $10 for kid bleachers. 

UAlbany and Maine split the regular season title with each going 15-1 in America East play.

UAlbany, the four-time defending America East Tournament champion, defeated Vermont and Binghamton to earn the title game berth, standing at 26-4 overall.  Maine, in its first America East title game since 2004, had wins over New Hampshire and Stony Brook to enter Friday at 26-7 overall.

UAlbany Women’s Golf Wins Lonnie Barton Title By 18 Strokes

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – In the first tournament of the 2016 spring season, the University at Albany women’s golf team captured the title at the Lonnie Barton Invitational played at the LPGA International Hills Course. The Great Danes placed first out of 10 competing teams, shooting 323 on Monday and 314 on Tuesday for a final score of 637. St. John’s (655) placed second, followed by Siena (656), Sacred Heart (667) and Fairfield (677) in the top five.

"It is always nice to be able to come to Florida and to win our first tournament of the spring season after not having hit a golf ball on grass for just about five months,” said Head Coach Colleen Cashman-McSween. “It says a lot about this team’s hard work and dedication in the off-season and during the indoor practice season.”

Sophomore Annie Songeun Lee paced UAlbany with a second-place overall finish, shooting 79-75—154.

“I'm very proud of Annie on her second-place finish and she seems to have started the spring on the same foot she left off on in the fall,” said Cashman-McSween. “Unfortunately, our number two player couldn't tee it up this week due to an injury, so this truly was a team effort.”

Junior Rosalee Hearns tied for sixth with a 159 (80-79), followed by senior Yoorim Kang (82-81—163) who tied for 11^th in the 49-athlete field. Freshman Natalie Yamamoto (82-85—167) placed 15^th, while junior Nicolette Darois (90-79—169) rounded out UAlbany’s lineup.

“Anytime you can come out of the winter without being outside and win a big event it is pretty exciting. I'm very proud of them,” said Cashman-McSween.

Up next, the Great Danes compete in the Bearcats’ Spring Classic in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., March 25-27.

Football Brings No. 25 Villanova To Albany For First Time On Saturday

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Battling a slew of injuries, the University at Albany football team looks to get back on the winning track when the Great Danes host No. 25 Villanova Saturday at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the American Sports Network.

UALBANY, VILLANOVA SERIESSaturday’s meeting will mark just the second between UAlbany and Villanova. The Wildcats own a 1-0 lead in the series, winning 2014’s Nov. 15^th meeting, 48-31, on their home field. Villanova was ranked No. 6 in the nation at the time.

Men’s Soccer Records UAlbany’s First Win at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium 2-1 Over Hartford

ALBANY, N.Y. – University at Albany men’s soccer (6-6-1, 1-2-0 AE) became the first UAlbany team to win at the newly named Tom & Mary Casey Stadium on Wednesday night in a 2-1 victory over Hartford (4-5-3, 0-2-1 AE). The Danes picked up their first league win courtesy of goals from Jake Barros and Leo Melgar.

“I was really happy with tonight’s performance,” said head coach Trevor Gorman. “In the first half especially I thought we were excellent, and overall it’s a really big win. Our players were really determined to give a high-level performance, and we’re looking forward to continuing that on Saturday.”

Off the first corner of the match for UAlbany, Martin Gorrie connected with Bernardo Mattos for a header in front of the Hartford net. Mattos had his shot saved, and his rebound attempt was blocked. Gorrie came up for the third look, but also fired off-target.

Gorrie got back in the swing in the 29th minute, as he chipped in a ball from the left side. Barros volleyed the feed into the lower right corner for a 1-0 UAlbany lead.

Just two shots later, the Danes scored again for a 2-0 advantage. Despite much back-and-forth through the midfield, UAlbany struck again in the 43rd minute. Afonso Pinheiro took on three defenders through the middle of the field, leaving Leo Melgar open on the right side. Melgar went low and near post for his fifth goal of the season with time running down in the first half.
At the break, UAlbany held an 8-1 shot advantage.

Hartford became increasingly frustrated on the offensive end, as offsides hampered any attempts at re-gaining momentum. The Danes took five looks on net to open the second half.

But the Hawks nearly caught a break mid-way through the period. Second-leading scorer Jeff Tyron caught a break downfield, and Eric Orologio came off his line. Tyron made the move around Orologio, but Keith Traut slid in front of an open net to maintain a 2-0 lead with 25 minutes left.

With the wind out of Hartford’s sails, UAlbany began to push the ball forward. Pinheiro smashed a shot from near the 18-yard box in the 77th minute, but goalkeeper David MacKinnon made the diving save.

The Hawks managed to get one back on a corner kick with less than five minutes to play. UAlbany held on for a crucial three points in league competition.

In addition to taking the program’s first win at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium, UAlbany men’s soccer was also the first Great Dane team to win at Bob Ford Field after its opening in 2013.

Next up for Gorman’s squad is UMass Lowell (7-5-0, 2-1-0 AE) on Saturday at 8:00pm from Bob Ford Field at Casey Stadium. The Purple & Gold face the River Hawks following the 3:30pm UAlbany football game against Villanova.

Women’s Golf Places First With Three Top-10 Finishers at Quinnipiac Classic

HAMDEN, Conn. -- With a three-round score of 927, the University at Albany women’s golf team placed first in the 11-team Quinnipiac Classic. After recording a 313 in the opening round, the Great Danes shot back-to-back 307s in Monday’s second 18 and Tuesday’s final go-around at New Haven Country Club.

“I can't tell you how thrilled I am with today's results,” said Head Coach Colleen Cashman-McSween. “The most important part of the team win was that all five players contributed at least one very important round for the victory.”

Leindecker Career-High 23 Kills Leads UAlbany Volleyball to Defeat Stony Brook in Five for Third-Straight Victory

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The UAlbany volleyball team earned another five-set contest win on the road on Sunday, beating Stony Brook 3-2 (25-23, 25-23, 14-25, 25-27, 15-9) for its third-consecutive victory in America East play.

“Stony Brook does a great job making their gym environment very partisan; going up two sets helped, but we got stuck in some rotations that next two sets and let them back in,” said UAlbany coach MJ Engstrom. “I’m really proud that we were able to stay focused and steady the ship.  Gabby [Hansen], Laini [Leindecker] and Tatum [Jungsten] had key serves in the fifth set, and Amanda [Dolan] did an awesome job patrolling the net.

UAlbany Women’s Soccer Outshoots Stony Brook 20-10 but Falls on the Road 2-0

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Despite 20 shots against the Seawolves, the UAlbany women’s soccer team ran into a strong goalkeeper and fell at Stony Brook 2-0 on Thursday night at LaValle Stadium.
UAlbany (6-7-1, 1-2-1 AE) outshot Stony Brook (4-7-2, 1-2-0 AE) 20-10 in the game, including 14-3 in the second half, but all nine shots on goal were saved by the Seawolves’ keeper Emily Doherty.
“We need to be better at the start of the match and come out with more intensity,” said UAlbany coach Caitlin Cucchiella. “We were able to create goal-scoring opportunities and lock them into their half, but we need to score goals.”

Alexa Schneider led the team with six shots while Vivian Vega had four and Leanne Miller and Allison Carhart each contributed three.  Alana Brennan had the loss in goal with a save in 69:19.  Alana Olivieri finished the game with a save.

For Stony Brook, Raven Edwards had the eventual game-winner in the 7^th minute from Kaitlin Loughren, with Emily Murrer adding the insurance goal in the 61^st.  Dohery got the victory with the shutout.

As Stony Brook cleared the ball away from defense in the 7^th minute, Loughren kicked to a streaking Edwards in the center of the UAlbany back line.  Edwards got free and fired from 20 yards out, scoring below the crossbar for a 1-0 Stony Brook lead.

In minute 11, Schneider took the ball away from a defender and went to the box, turning and shooting as a defender blocked the ball out of bounds.  The corner went back to Schneider, who headed the ball towards the middle of the cage with the keeper catching the ball.

The other way, Stony Brook nearly got a second goal on a counter as Edwards got space outside the box on the left, going for the right post on the shot and slamming the top corner.

Schneider kept forcing the action, taking the ball towards the endline just inside the box.  With the narrow angle, Schneider kicked a laser and hit the inside of the opposite post.  The ball stayed along the goal line and did not cross before the keeper grabbed it.

The 30^th minute saw UAlbany take a free kick from Caitlyn Paltsios from about 40 yards out.  UAlbany connected three passes to Vega to the penalty box for the open shot, with Vega kicking the ball high.

Miller received a pass from Schneider on the far side outside the box in the 38^th minute.  Miller approached the corner and tried for the left post, being stopped by the keeper.  Stony Brook attacked with a counter as Tessa Devereaux got a deflected ball from 25 yards out, going for a long shot and missing high.  The two sides went into the half with Stony Brook leading 1-0.

UAlbany looked to go after the center of Stony Brook’s back line on fast attacks.  Carhart had the first look on a turnaround ground shot from far away, missing left.

Stony Brook got its second goal in the 61^st minute as the ball came towards a scrum in the box.  Murrer got a foot on it and tapped it above Brennan and into the net for the goal to make it 2-0 Seawolves.

Four minutes later, UAlbany nearly got its first goal as Fitzpatrick sent the ball towards the goal box.  Schneider pulled off the keeper for the header to Vega.  Vega headed the ball from 10 yards out as Doherty got back to grab the attempt.

UAlbany put more forwards in the game to try to come back in the game.  One such chance occurred in the 75^th minute as Meghan Malone drilled a ball from 15 yards out, again with Doherty stopping it.

In minute 82, Schneider pounded a line drive towards the right post, with a diving Doherty punching the ball out of bounds.  Schneider got a second chance on the corner with a header, pushing the ball left.  UAlbany did not get another shot on goal and fell to Stony Brook 2-0.

UAlbany will have the weekend off and will play its next game at Tom and Mary Casey Stadium next Thursday, October 15th, taking on Hartford at 7 p.m.

UAlbany Athletics Receives $10 Million Gift

Stadium will be named in honor of Tom & Mary Casey
ALBANY, N.Y. -- University at Albany President Robert J. Jones, Foundation President George R. Hearst III and Athletic Director Mark Benson announced that the University has received a $10 million gift to support the football stadium and other facilities, expand scholarships for student-athletes, and address additional priorities in athletics.

The gift was made by The Bernard and Millie Children’s Foundation, which was established by the son of Bernard and Millie Duker, William Duker ’75, of Westerlo and New York City, his wife Sharon (Casey) Duker, and their son William "West" Duker. The stadium will be named Tom & Mary Casey Stadium, in honor of Sharon (Casey) Duker’s parents.

UAlbany Volleyball to Hold Dig Pink Match on October 23rd For the Side-Out Foundation

ALBANY, N.Y. – The UAlbany volleyball team will hold its annual Dig Pink Match on Friday, October 23^rd at 7 p.m. to help raise money and awareness for the Side-Out Foundation in the fight against breast cancer.

“Nearly everyone in this country has been touched by the tentacles of breast cancer,” said UAlbany head coach MJ Engstrom. “Over the past 10 years, the Dig Pink Foundation has partnered with volleyball to raise critical funds for breast cancer research.  Please come out and see an entertaining match and support this most worthy cause.”

At the match, there will be a table of items available for purchase, with all donations going to the Side-out Foundation.  In addition, a donation box will be passed around in the stands in-between the second and third set.

The first 50 people in attendance will receive a free Dig Pink T-shirt, sponsored by SEFCU.

In its mission statement, the Side-Out Foundation “teams with the volleyball community to inspire science and hope in the match against breast cancer.”

UAlbany will take on Binghamton in the contest on Friday, October 23^rd at 7 p.m. at the University Gym.  The Great Danes will wear special pink uniforms in support of the cause.

No. 6 Field Hockey Takes Nation-Best Road Winning Streak to Maine and Yale this Weekend

ALBANY, N.Y.- With a 12-game road winning streak on the line, No. 6 University at Albany (9-1, 2-0 AE) visits Maine (10-2, 1-0 AE) and Yale (2-7, 0-2 Ivy) this weekend. The Danes face the Black Bears on Friday at 3:00pm, followed by the Bulldogs on Sunday at 1:00pm.

This week, Phil Sykes’s squad maintained the No. 6 spot in the NFHCA National Poll. UAlbany started the America East slate 2-0 for the third consecutive year. The Danes downed Vermont 3-1 last Friday and UNH 4-1 last Sunday, extending their winning streak to five games.

Through 10 games, Paula Heuser leads the team with 12 goals and five assists for 29 points. 

Sophomore Anna Bottino has 15 points on five goals and five assists thus far in 2015.

The freshmen have emerged as an important facet of UAlbany’s offense in recent games. After sitting out the first five contests, Frederike Helmke has scored twice. Camryn Dias tallied her first career goal last weekend against UNH, and midfielder Megan Ma has recorded two assists on the season.
