ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany men’s soccer team (5-3-2) hosted Syracuse University (8-2-1) on Bob Ford Field at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium on Tuesday night.  When the 90 minutes expired, the Great Danes had earned a signature win, dropping the fifth-ranked Orange by a score of 2-1.

“We felt like we created some good chances tonight,” said head coach Trevor Gorman.  “We had guys reacting to second balls, balls were dropping to them, and you need the ball to drop your way in any game.  Fortunately for us we found those two goals, and we had a couple other chances that we liked.”

SUNY Cobleskill Men's Soccer Drops 2-1 Heartbreaker at Penn State Abington in NEAC Action

Abington, Pa. - The SUNY Cobleskill men's soccer team was out battled by conference power Penn State Abington on Saturday afternoon in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action by a 2-1 margin. The loss drops the Fighting Tigers to 4-5-1 overall including a 3-3-1 record versus league opponents while the Nittany Lions now move to 8-1 overall with a perfect 7-0 record in conference play.

Trailing 1-0 in the first half Cobleskill tied the contest at 1-1 when senior defender Corey Johnson, Brooklyn, N.Y., Abraham Lincoln High School, hit a perfectly placed shot to the lower left corner of the net in the 40th minute of play.

From there both sides play strategic soccer and the contest turned into a defensive struggle until in the 67th minute when senior forward Richard Domico, Langhorne, Pa., Neshaminy High School, scored in the box to give the Nittany Lions a 2-1 lead which turned into the final margin of victory.

Vassar Edged 1-0 By No. 11 St. Lawrence

CANTON, NY (October 1, 2016) — The Vassar College men's soccer team concluded its three-game road trip with a 1-0 setback at No. 11 St. Lawrence University on Saturday.

Previously on the Brewers' road trip, they tied with Skidmore College 1-1 and topped Clarkson University 2-1. With that, Vassar (7-2-2, 1-1-1) is tied for third in the Liberty League with four points, alongside Hobart College, Clarkson University and Rochester Institute of Technology.

The Brewers held a slight possession edge, outshooting the home team 18-16 overall. Freshmen Mattie Mrlik and Henrik Olsson led the Brewers with two shots-on-goal apiece.

Goalkeeper Matt Marcelino took the loss with four saves, while Mike Smith earned the win for St. Lawrence (9-1-0, 2-1-0) with six stops.

The game's lone goal came in the 14th minute. Christian Barral-Arteta sent a long feed from the midfield into the top of the box, where Brendan McNamee notched his first goal of the season to put the Saints on top for good, 1-0.

Vassar returns home to Poughkeepsie for a five-game homestand, beginning Saturday, Oct. 8 against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Kickoff from Gordon Field is set for 2 p.m.

Men's Soccer Falters in SUNYAC Opener at New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's soccer team faltered 3-0 at New Paltz in the opening game of the SUNYAC schedule on Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Lakers are 3-5-0 on the year while the Hawks remain without a defeat at 4-0-4.

Oswego was able to put two shots on-goal against New Paltz, with Paul Kwoyelo and Connor Lunduski each registering one, but both were stopped by the Hawk keeper. Those attempts came just minutes after the Hawks tallied the contest's first goal, as the Lakers applied pressure in trying to knot the game.

The game would stay a one-goal margin for most of the way, with Oswego's defense holding New Paltz at bay until the final 10 minutes. At 81:44, the Hawks added an insurance goal and some breathing room before tacking on their final notch at 86:03.

Sophomore Evan Bogucki made two saves for the Lakers between the pipes.

Oswego will head back out to the pitch at 1 p.m. on Saturday when it faces hosts Oneonta in another conference tilt.

Orange Extend Winning Streak at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. – Redshirt senior Liam Callahan scored the go-ahead goal less than five minutes into the second half to lead the No. 2 Syracuse men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory at Cornell on Tuesday, Sept. 20. The Orange improve their record to 8-0, which is the best start in program history, bettering the mark of the 1984 squad that began the season with seven consecutive wins.
 
"You don't want to get carried away, but I also want our guys to enjoy the fact that they've had a wonderful start to the season," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "The fact that you're comparing starts to that wonderful 1984 team – this is a terrific accomplishment and I want our guys to enjoy it. This was an opportunity today for the guys to write their names in the record book."

Freshmen Highlight Vassar's 3-0 Win

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — Freshmen players stepped up, as the Vassar College men's soccer team topped Elmira College at Gordon Field on Tuesday.

Mattie Mrlik assisted on the game-winner, scored by fellow freshman Henrik Olsson in the first half, before finding the back of the net himself in the second, thanks to an assist from Desmond Curran.

"(The freshmen) have worked hard," coach Andy Jennings said. "Both Henrik and Mattie did well…. We're pleased, and kids coming off the bench did a great job."

Vassar extended its lead to 3-0 with a Jose Novas goal, courtesy of Alex Gonzales.

The Brewers maintained possession throughout the contest, outshooting the Soaring Eagles, 18-5. Freshman goalkeeper Will Marment earned the win for Vassar (6-1-1) with one save in his first start, while Haruka Okamoto took the loss for Elmira (2-2-1) with six saves through 83 minutes. Michael Bryant played the remaining seven minutes in the cage for the Soaring Eagles, who came into the contest having won or drawn their three previous games.

Looking at each goal, the Brewers opened up scoring in the 20th minute. Mrlik popped up a header-pass to Olsson, who struck his first goal on the year into the far corner from inside the six. The Brewers took a 1-0 lead into the break before coming out even more focused in the second half.

"I thought we came out a little slow, but everyone supported each other and we got through," Mrlik said. "We played well as a team in the second half and started connecting passes really well."

About 10 minutes into the new period, Curran crossed left into the box for Mrlik to head his team-leading fourth goal of the season straight back into the net. The Brewers earned even more breathing room in the 74th minute. Gonzales bent a low cross to Novas, who buried his third goal of the year into the near post.

Vassar looks to build upon this victory heading into conference play, which begins Saturday, Sept. 24 at Skidmore College. Kickoff from Wachenheim Field is set for 2 p.m.

Raptors draw with unbeaten New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - The Bard College and SUNY New Paltz men's soccer teams left Tuesday's non-league game the same way they entered it - unbeaten.

The 0-0 draw leaves New Paltz at 3-0-4, and Bard at 4-0-3, the best start in the history of the program.

New Paltz generated more shots (12-5), more corners (6-1) and a few more scoring chances. But Bard keeper Taylor Bond kept the Hawks off the score sheet with good decisions, assertiveness, some punched out clears of high crosses, and one stellar save in the final minute of the first overtime.

The Hawks outshot Bard 6-3 in the first half and 6-0 in the second half, but Bard produced the only two shots in the two overtime periods.

A New Paltz corner kick with 16 seconds left in the first overtime produced a huge scrum in front of the goal, and Bond made an incredible save on a shot that glanced off a Bard defender and was headed in.

Senior goalie Mark Nowak (Newburgh, NY) made one save for New Paltz. Bond finished with six saves for the Raptors.

Statesmen blank Pioneers 5-0

GENEVA, N.Y.—Nine Statesmen notched a point as the Hobart College soccer team downed Utica 5-0 in a non-conference game played this afternoon on Cozzens Field.
 
The Statesmen improve to 2-3-2 overall, while the Pioneers fall to 1-6-0. Just 9:12 into the match, senior JP White put Hobart on the board, lifting his shot into the left side of the goal after a short pass from first-yearCooper O'Connell. First-year Mike Goulart posted his first goal as a Statesman in the 39th minute. Sophomore Sam Farman blasted a shot the banged off a defender and right to Goulart who finished off the play.
 
Hobart tallied three more goals in the second half. Junior Zach Poretz took a feed from sophomore Derrick Acheampong to make it 3-0 in the 49th minute. Sophomore Mouhamed Diouf notched his first goal of the year, sending home his shot in the 60th minute after a short pass in the box from junior Joseph Escamilla. First-year Tristan Cornell Roberts completed the scoring with his first collegiate goal in the 77th minute. He got the ball just inside the box, made a move around his defender, and capitalized on a one-on-one with the keeper.
 
The Pioneers' best scoring chance came in the 82nd minute. Joseph Hunter broke through for a one-on-one with the Hobart keeper, first-year Brian Salazar, who came in for the final 13:42. Salazar came out to play the ball, but Hunter got around him, however he drilled his shot wide left of the goal.
 
Sophomore Alec Kaminer played the first 76:18 in goal for Hobart and made two saves. Salazar did not face a shot. Austyn Diller played all 90 minutes for Utica and finished with seven saves. The Statesmen held a 19-5 advantage in shots and a 6-2 lead in corners.
 
Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 24, when it travels to No. 5 St. Lawrence to open Liberty League play. The game is set to begin at 3 p.m.

Morrisville State men roll to 4-0 victory over Wilson

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College men's soccer team cruised to a 4-0 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) win over visiting Wilson College Saturday afternoon, as they held a benefit game for the Upstate Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in Morrisville.
The win lifts Morrisville State to 8-3-2, 7-1-1 in conference play. Wilson dropped to 2-8-1 overall, 2-5-1 in NEAC action.

Jamieson McKoy (Bronx, N.Y.) notched two to lead the Mustangs in the conference win, including the first tally at the 26 minute mark, a rebound off the initial post shot by Alan Peckham (Webster, N.Y.).

Peckham extended the Morrisville State lead to two at 33:16, notching an unassisted tally on the header after a Wilson defender made the team stop.

Julian Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.)  made it a 3-0 game in favor of the hosts minutes before the half, weaving through defenders into the box, firing the ball inside the right post for the score.

The lone score of the second half came in the 58^th minute, as McKoy juked the goalie to post his second of the day.

Rob Larkin (Clinton, N.Y.) recorded the win, despite not facing a shot in the first half before being replaced by Eric Berglund (Elmira, N.Y.) for the first 26 minutes of the second. Berglund posted no saves as well. Cody Gaines (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) registered three stops in the final 19 minutes of play.

Morrisville State held the visitors to just eight shots on the day, as Wilson keeper Michael Martin recorded four stops, with his defense adding three team stops in the efforts.

The Mustangs return to the field Sunday, hosting Gallaudet University at 11 a.m. for Senior Day celebrations.

Mavs fall (2-1) to Behrend in AMCC Game of the Week

BUFFALO, NY – The Medaille College Men's Soccer Team squared off this afternoon with Penn State Behrend  in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Game of the Week.

Medaille entered the game with a (9-3-1 overall, 3-0-1 AMCC) record. Penn State Behrend entered the contest with a (11-1-1 overall, 5-0-0 AMCC) record.

Medaille outshot the Lions (10-6) in the game, but the defending AMCC Champion Lions prevailed with a late goal that put them ahead (2-1).

Men's Soccer Stays Undefeated in AMCC Play with Win Over Franciscan

BUFFALO, NY – The Medaille College Men's Soccer team hosted the Barons of Franciscan on Sunday afternoon, looking to keep their unbeaten conference record alive in front of the home crowd. On a beautiful October afternoon the Mavericks were able to do just that, beating the Barons (4-2).

Medaille was able to put pressure on the Barons early, constantly testing Franciscan's back line. A hit post by senior Yggor Zignago (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Veiga de almeida) and a couple timely saves from the Baron keeper kept the score knotted at zero for the opening parts of the first half.

The Mavericks would break through in the (30') minute when following a Franciscan yellow, senior Michael Jackson (Bath, NY, Bath) soared above the Franciscan defense and headed in a beautiful free kick from senior Ian Brown (Akron, NY, Akron) for his first goal of the season. Jackson's goal proved the spark that was needed for Medaille to open the flood gates in the first half.

Just two minutes later in the (32') minute senior Cory Carter (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, St. Joseph Secondary) snipped a long range goal off of a beautiful play from freshman Moo Kpor Mu (Buffalo, NY, Riverside). The goal was Carter's fourth of the season, but the assist wasn't Mu's only contribution of the afternoon. In the (39') minute Mu set up fellow freshman Nick DuMond (Lockport, NY, Starpoint) with a gorgeous through ball, as DuMond buried his fourth goal of the year to give Medaille a (3-0) lead.

The Barons came out and gave the Mavericks a fight in the second half. Taking advantage of a Medaille turnover in their own end during the (58') minute to cut the lead to (3-1). However, junior Junior Geegba (Ivory Coast, Riverside) put the dagger in Franciscan's comeback during the (78') minute with his ninth goal of the season to give Medaille a (4-1) lead.

The Barons added another late goal, but Medaille came away with the (4-2) victory at home.

Junior keeper Brian Arcara (Orchard Park, NY, Orchard Park) stopped (3) shots in the win, as Medaille improves their record to (9-3-1) overall and (3-0-1) in the AMCC. They will put their unbeaten conference record to the test on Tuesday morning when they host the Lions of Penn State-Behrend at Johnny B. Wiley Field at 11:00 am.

Mustang men’s soccer plays to one goal draw with Abington

ABINGTON, Pa. – Visiting Morrisville State College men's soccer played to a one goal draw with host Penn State Abington Sunday afternoon, netting a late game score for the tie.

The draw lands Morrisville State with a 7-2-2 overall record, 6-0-1 within North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play.

Colmenares scores game winner as Statesmen edge #24 Saints in overtime

GENEVA, N.Y.— Hobart College sophomore Adrian Colmenares scored the game-winning on a penalty kick 1:59 into overtime to secure a 1-0 Liberty League victory for the Statesmen soccer team over No. 24 St. Lawrence on Cozzens Field this afternoon.

The Statesmen improve to 8-2-2 overall and earned their first conference victory (1-1-2). The Saints fall to 8-3-2 overall and are 2-2-0 in Liberty League play. It was Hobart's seventh shutout this season. Four of the Statesmen's last six games have gone into overtime.

It was Colmenares' first goal of the season. After 90 minutes of play and the score still 0-0, the teams headed to overtime. Just over a minute into the extra period, the Saints were called for a foul in the box. Colmenares stepped up and clinched the victory with his penalty kick goal.

Senior goalie Tyler Serafine played all 91:59 for Hobart and made three saves to earn his sixth shutout of the season. St. Lawrence's Ryan Roethel played the entire match and finished with four saves. The Statesmen held a 14-10 advantage in shots and a 6-2 lead in corners.

Each team had chances to get on the scoreboard during regulation. One of the Saints' better chances came late in the second half. St. Lawrence was awarded a free kick after a Statesmen foul. Morgan Smith took the kick from about 30 yards out, placing it in the box. Christian Yarros was at the left post and was inches away from connecting with the cross and tapping it in, but the cross sailed  just wide of the goal. With just 2:47 left in regulation, Smith beat two Statesmen defenders, maneuvering into the box. He passed to Jethro Dede, but his shot carried wide right.

Hobart also had scoring chances late in the second half. Junior JP White broke through the St. Lawrence back line for a one-on-one with the keeper, but fired his shot high over the crossbar. Early in the first half the Statesmen came close to scoring on a corner. Senior Tyler Terens lofted the ball into the box. Classmate Tyler Niles was right there, but the Saints' keeper grabbed the ball just before Niles could get a shot off.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 16, when they host Vassar for another Liberty League contest at 4 p.m. on Cozzens Field.

Morrisville State men hand Bryn Athyn 3-0 defeat

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – Visiting Morrisville State College men's soccer posted a 3-0 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) road win Saturday afternoon, topping host Bryn Athyn College in conference play.

The win boosts the Mustangs to 7-2-1 overall, 6-0 within the NEAC, while the hosts drop to 6-1 overall, 2-4-1 in conference play.

Morrisville State posted all three tallies in the first half, the first and eventual game winner on an unassisted tally from senior captain Danny Peckham (Webster, N.Y.) just five minutes in.

Morrisville State added to their lead in the 23^rd minute, as Julian Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) put the ball away off a feed from Chernor Barrie (Bronx, N.Y.).

Accele Rando (Thailand) sealed the win for the Mustangs with an unassisted tally at the 39:06 mark in the first half.

Eric Berglund (Elmira, N.Y.) posted the win in net, turning away one in 74 minutes of action before Cody Gaines (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) closed out the final 16 minutes.

The Mustangs return to the field Sunday, playing host Penn St. Abington at noon.

Men's Soccer Loses NEAC Game at SUNY Polytechnic 7-0

Fighting Tigers Drop 7-0 Decision to SUNY Polytechnic Wildcats
Marcy, N.Y. - The road once again proved to be a rough one for the SUNY Cobleskill men's soccer team on Saturday as the visiting Fighting Tigers could not overcome a powerful effort from host SUNY Polytechnic Institute falling to the Wildcats by a 7-0 margin in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action. The loss drops Cobleskill to 0-11 overall on the season including a 0-6 mark in league play while SUNY Poly moves to 7-4-1 overall with a 4-2 conference record.

The Fighting Tigers allowed five goals in the first half which sealed the contest's outcome as Cobleskill was once again outshot on the day by a 28-5 tally and dominated in the corner kicks area by hosts by the tune of 17-to-1.

Cobleskill will return to action after the college's fall break when they host the Eagles of Green Mountain College on Wednesday October 14^th with kick-off at 4:00 p.m.

Late Goals Lead #2 Tar Heels Past #22 Orange

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 22/-- Syracuse took the early lead, but a pair of second-half goals by No. 2/2 North Carolina gave the Tar Heels a 2-1 victory against the Orange on Saturday, Oct. 10 in Chapel Hill, N.C. The loss snaps Syracuse's five-match winning streak.

North Carolina (10-0-1, 5-0-0) controlled much of the first 10 minutes before Syracuse (8-3-1, 2-2-1) was able to maintain possession in its offensive end. The Orange's pressure led to a corner kick in the 23rd minute. Junior Oyvind Alseth played the ball high to redshirt junior Liam Callahan who served the ball into the box. His pass connected with freshman Miles Robinson and his header into the back of the net gave Syracuse a 1-0 lead. The goal was the first the Tar Heels had allowed in more than 200 minutes of action.

Men’s Soccer Returns to America East Play at UMBC Saturday Afternoon

ALBANY, N.Y.- Looking for its first win in conference play, University at Albany men’s soccer (5-5-1, 0-1-0 AE) visits UMBC (6-2-2, 0-0-1 AE) on Saturday afternoon at 2:30pm. The Danes will be the primetime feature of UMBC homecoming.

Despite a game-tying goal late in the first half, No. 22 Syracuse defeated the Purple & Gold 2-1 in Central New York on Tuesday night. Carlos Clark scored his second goal of the year on a corner kick header off the foot of Philip Persson. Danny Vitiello made eight saves in the loss, and posts the top save percentage in the league (.812). The redshirt freshman is making 5.20 saves per game.

UAlbany continues to shut out its opponents in wins, and boasts 0.50 shutouts per game to lead the league. Afonso Pinheiro spends another week atop the total goals (8), total points (16), points per game (1.60) and goals per game (0.80) leaderboard in the conference this week.

Around the league, Binghamton beat Vermont 2-1 in Burlington last week. UNH defeated UMass Lowell 3-1, while Hartford and UMBC drew 1-1.

Men’s Soccer Falls 2-1 at No. 22 Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Despite a comeback effort to end the first half, University at Albany men’s soccer (5-5-1, 0-1-0 AE) took a 2-1 loss at No. 22 Syracuse (8-2-1, 2-1-1 ACC) on Tuesday night. Freshman Carlos Clark notched his second goal of the season from Philip Persson in the 44th minute.

“I was proud of our team tonight,” said head coach Trevor Gorman. “Syracuse is a very good team that’s well coached and competing at the highest level. We enjoyed some good periods of the game, and are certainly capable of playing at that level going forward. These are the types of games that are great for us as we get deeper into conference play.”

The Orange got out to a quick start, scoring in the 14th minute. Chris Nanco converted off of a UAlbany turnover deep in the Great Danes end.

But the Purple & Gold built momentum towards the end of the period, after struggling to move the ball into Syracuse’s offensive half. On a ball downfield to Jake Barros, Orange goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert edged out to the 18-yard box but couldn’t keep the ball inbounds.

Leo Melgar set up on the right side of the 18 yard box, and hit Bernardo Mattos for the shot on goal. Mattos fired low and near post on the one-time through traffic, but Hilpert punched away the attempt. 

Just before the end of the half, Philip Persson served up a corner kick to the top of the six-yard box, connecting with the head of Carlos Clark to tie the game 1-1 going into the break. Despite a 7-1 differential on corners in the first period, the Danes made the most of their opportunity.

After Danny Vitiello saw six shots to open the second half, UAlbany finally got its crack at the goal as Jonathan Interiano re-entered the game. The junior fired and had his shot saved, but set up a corner kick. Melgar served up the corner, but Gorman’s squad was called offsides.

Thwarting off the initial advance, Syracuse countered in the 78th minute to make the score 2-1. The Orange would take the only other shot in the game.

Despite only taking six shots in 90 minutes, UAlbany put five on target for a season-best shooting percentage (.833). Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Danny Vitiello made eight saves, the second-highest for the Massapequa native in his six appearances.

UAlbany men’s soccer (5-5-1, 0-1-0) returns to America East play on Saturday, with a 2:30 p.m., contest at 2014 NCAA Semifinalist UMBC (6-2-2, 0-0-1 AE). The Danes will be crashing homecoming for the Retrievers.

Alfred edges Blue Devils, 1-0

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Richard Lander scored in the 24th minute and Chris Gutierrez made two saves in rapid succession as Alfred defeated Fredonia, 1-0, in non-conference men's soccer at University Stadium.

Lander pounced when Fredonia goalkeeper Austin Santor (Chazy, N.Y.) lost the handle on a cross from the right corner by another Alfred player. The goal was Lander's eighth of the season.

Gutierrez stopped a penalty kick by Fredonia's Ryan Keller (East Aurora, N.Y.) in the 75th minute. The rebound went to Aaron Hayes (Hamburg, N.Y.) and Gutierrez stopped that shot, too. They were his only two saves in the game.

Santor finished with five saves while Keller took four shots to lead the Blue Devils, who fell to 1-8-2 heading into a pair of SUNYAC home games this weekend -- 3 p.m. Friday vs. Oswego, 1 p.m. Saturday vs. Cortland.

Alfred improved to 8-2-1.

Orange Extends Winning Streak Against Albany

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Ben Polk scored in the 78th minute to lift No. 22 Syracuse to a 2-1 victory against Albany on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The win is the fifth straight for the Orange, which improved its overall record to 8-2-1.

"We weren't at our best tonight for a couple of reasons," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "The first is you give a lot of credit to Albany. We weren't fully at the races. Having said that, we found a way to win tonight."

Syracuse had more quality scoring opportunities throughout the match and junior Chris Nanco gave the Orange the lead when he took possession of the ball after it deflected off an Albany player in the box. He put his shot inside the far post in the 14th minute for his third goal of the year.
