Mavericks Offense Comes Alive Against Eagles

Medaille sweeps College of Saint Elizabeth

MORRISTOWN, NJ – The Medaille Mavericks Men's Volleyball team kicked off the final weekend of the regular season in New Jersey on Friday evening, traveling to the College of Saint Elizabeth to take on the Eagles. The Mavericks offense exploded  while the defense shut the Eagles down en route to a 3-0 sweep.

It was an impressive showing on all fronts for the Mavs with arguably their most efficient offense showing of the season. In the opening set Medaille earned 11 kills while hitting a season best .474. Set two saw 15 kills go down for the Mavericks on a .303 hitting percentage.

The third and final set saw Medaille's hitting percentage back over .400 with 10 kills and just one single error.

On the other side of the net the Mavericks were just as impressive. Medaille surrendered just 8 kills to Saint Elizabeth the entire match, as the Eagles hit 11 total errors for a -.055 hitting percentage. Combine that with the Mavs earning 17 service aces compared to just three for Saint Elizabeth.

Sophomore Brazil Thompson (Buffalo, NY, Cheektowaga) led the way with 10 kills and fellow sophomore Nick Patterson (Amherst, NY, Amherst) wasn't far behind with eight. In total nine different Mavericks earned at least one kill while junior Matt Dempsey (Clarence, NY, Clarence) dished out 22 assists.

Junior Daniel Joseph (El Dorado, CA, Union Mine) led all Mavericks with six digs as Medaille improved their record to 7-20 overall and 3-4 in conference play. The Mavs wrap up their regular season tomorrow with a tilt against Lancaster Bible at 1:00 pm.

Mavericks Fall at Penn State Behrend

Lions get best of Medaille

ERIE, PA – The Medaille College Men's Volleyball traveled to Erie to take on the Lions of Penn State Behrend as the Mavs wrapped up their non-conference schedule on Tuesday. It was a close battle throughout but a slow start and some timely hitting from Penn State Behrend helped the Lions earn a 3-1 win.

The Mavericks had a hard time offensively in the opening set, hitting -.280 with 11 errors and just four kills. On the other side of the net Penn State Behrend took advantage while also hitting well themselves to take set one 25-13.

Set two was much closer as both teams racked up double digit kills. The turning point came when the Lions went on an 8-0 run turning a 15-12 deficit into a 19-15 lead. The Mavericks were able to pull back within two however that was as close as they could get, falling in set two 25-21.

Medaille got back into the match during set three earning 15 kills compared to just five errors. The .278 hitting average in the third helped the Mavs cut the Lions lead to 2-1 as they hoped to push it to five.

Unfortunately for Medaille that wasn't to be as Penn State Behrend answered every Maverick run with one of their own, taking the fourth and final set 25-23.

Senior Steven Ebert (Center Moriches, NY, Center Moriches) led the way for Medaille with 11 kills. Fellow senior Matt Dempsey (Clarence, NY, Clarence) dished out 35 assists and had a team high 19 digs while senior Sam Bloomberg (Lake Worth, FL, Park Vista) and sophomore Shawn Barbalato (Williamsville, NY, Williamsville South) earned 3 blocks each as Medaille fell to 6-20 on the season.

The Mavericks wrap up their regular season this weekend when they take on the College of Saint Elizabeth on Friday and Lancaster Bible on Saturday.

Game two triumph was of the comeback variety

BUFFALO, NY - The Medaille Mavericks Baseball team wrung out their uniforms and tried to stay dry as they prepared for their afternoon tilt with crosstown rival D'Youville College.  A handful of rainouts and postponements has complicated the blue and gold schedule this week, but they were able to find a playable field in the form of Canisius College's turf facility.

GAME 1

Peter Grunzweig (Buffalo, NY, CSAT) was tabbed with the game one start.  He looked to give the Mavericks quality innings and a chance to win like he always seems to do; a stopper of sorts on the bump.

The Spartans tried to spoil the day for Grunzweig in the bottom of the first inning, as they bombarded the junior hurler with two quick runs. First baseman Travis Macrides and catcher Patrick Mulligan snuck singles through the Medaille infield, matching RBI singles respectively to produce an early (2-0) lead for D'Youville.

Medaille wasted no time answering back, as in the top of the second Ryan Wojcinski (North Tonawanda, NY, Cardinal O'Hara) cracked a single to right field to bring in sophomore Greg Power (Hicksville, NY, Hicksville), thus cutting the lead in half (2-1).

Later in the top portion of the second, Evan Dunning (Ilion, NY, Central Valley) reached on a fielder's choice, nabbing an RBI on the play as Wojcinski rounded from second on an error by the Spartans' second baseman.

The game would remain knotted at two until the later frames, where the Mavericks took their first lead of the contest. In the top of the fifth, Dominick Teoli (Niagara Falls, NY, St. Joe's) reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Dunning on the back half of the play. This marked the second time in the opening game of the doubleheader that the blue and gold were able to manufacture runs on fielder's choices.

That (3-2) lead would eventually hold as Grunzweig stifled the D'Youville offense from the first inning on.  The junior's complete game effort pushed his record here in 2018 to (2-3) as Medaille took the first game of the double dip.

GAME 2

Sal Carroccia (Lackawanna, NY, St. Francis) was given the ball for the Mavericks in the nightcap.  Similar to Grunzweig, he was put by behind the eight-ball by an early Spartan attack as with two runners on in the bottom of the second inning, an error out in center field allowed the first run of game two to come in.  Promptly after the miscue, D'Youville officially doubled up their second attempts at-bat thanks to a run-producing passed ball.

In the top of the third inning, Medaille mounted a push.  Shawn Filas (Hamburg, NY, Hamburg) got the blue and gold on the board with a single to left field.  Following the Filas knock, Wojcinski came up clutch once again with a two-run single up the middle, giving the Mavericks their first lead of game two (3-2).

The lead would not last long, however, as the Spartans retaliated with five unanswered runs from the bottom of the third inning up until the bottom of the sixth.  On the strength of a triple, a balk, a bases-loaded walk, and yet another run-producing three-bagger, D'Youville officially turned the tides handedly on the blue and gold as they came up to bat in the top half of the seventh.

Then came the gritty Maverick rally.  With the bases loaded and two outs, Dunning walked to produce the fourth run for the team.  Next, Connor Priester (North Tonawanda, NY, North Tonawanda) singled in two runs for the blue and gold to pull them to within a mere run.

With the score now standing at (7-6) advantage D'Youville after seven innings in the books, Medaille tied things up late in the top of the eighth thanks to a costly wild pitch by the Spartans (7-7).

D'Youville was stalled in the bottom of the eighth inning, and then the Mavericks went back to work in the top of the ninth.  Paul Barker (Niagara Falls, NY, Niagara Falls) drew a meaningful walk in the frame, and was manufactured all the way around to third base as Kemp stepped to the plate.  Kemp lifted a short fly ball between second base and right field which was caught, but Barker instinctively scampered ahead of the throw to give Medaille a (8-7) advantage in the final inning of play.  The blue and gold tacked on insurance runs following the sacrifice fly as Teoli and Power both came up with run-scoring infield singles to extend the Maverick lead to (10-7) as they went into shutdown mode for the bottom half.

Wojcinski nailed down Medaille's second win of the day with a painless bottom of the ninth, finalizing the crucial AMCC sweep of the D'Youville College Spartans.

His 3.1 innings of scoreless relief loomed large in the victorious effort.

Opening loss to Highlanders takes an extra frame to settle

HOUGHTON, NY - The Medaille Mavericks Softball team took to the road to play the Houghton College Highlanders on Thursday afternoon. Though there was travel for the blue and gold, the Mavericks would be serving as the home team due to inclement and poor weather conditions in Buffalo.

The cloudy conditions in the Houghton area proved to be a foreshadowing for the Medaille attack on this day, as doom and gloom was the name of the game as the offense was only able to muster up two total runs of offense as the Highlanders came away with a clean sweep. While game one was a tight pitcher's duel (3-2, F/8 innings), game two was no contest as Houghton absolutely ran away with the nightcap triumph (8-0).

Here's how the games played out:

GAME 1

After a scoreless first inning, it was the Highlanders who jumped out to the (1-0) advantage on the strength of an infield single with a runner on third base.

Medaille answered back an inning later, as in the bottom of the third frame Samantha Klein (Lancaster, NY, Lancaster) popped a solo homerun to knot the score up at (1).

That was all the scoring that would occur for either side through seven innings of play. On came extra innings, where it was Houghton who tallied the first (and only) multi-score inning of game one. A two-run double vaulted the Highlanders out to a huge (3-1) lead, applying pressure to the Mavericks who now only had three outs to come up with at least two runs of their own.

Though a retaliation was concocted, Medaille was only able to eke out a single run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Mercedes Sulzbach (West Seneca, NY, West Seneca East)'s RBI groundout pulled the blue and gold to within a run, but their offensive attack was once again stalled as Houghton snuck by the Mavericks by the final score of (3-2).

GAME 2

Game two was all Houghton as they scored in four out of seven times at-bat, en route to a convincing (8-0) victory over the blue and gold. Three of those four innings produced multiple runs. Paired with their prolific attack at the plate was a strong pitching performance from their junior two-way player Kaylee Jentsch. Jentsch frustrated the Mavericks attack all game. Though she only registered three strikeouts, she was able to generate weak, early contact and utilized a heavy sinkerball to induce (11) groundouts off the Medaille bats.

The Mavericks went (6) for (25) at the plate against Jentsch. Medaille's lone multi-hit effort in the game two loss came from Morgan Bedford (Newfane, NY, Newfane), tallied two knocks in three at-bats.

Strong pitching and situational hitting leads Medaille to a win

ROCHESTER, NY – The Mavericks traveled to Rochester, NY Monday afternoon to take on the Keuka Wolves in a non-conference matchup. The game would be a single nine inning game. Entering play the Mavs sported a record of (8-6) overall and (2-0) in conference.

Teoli went (3-5) with (3) RBIs.

Steven Hostinsky (Rochester Hills, MI, Stoney Creek) got the call on the mound for Medaille. The Mavs wasted no time getting down to work in this one. Connor Priester (North Tonawanda, NY, North Tonawanda) drew a leadoff walk to start the top of the first. He advanced to second on a throwing error and advanced to third on a Dominick Teoli (Niagara Falls, NY, St. Joe's) single. Ryan Wojcinski (North Tonawanda, NY, Cardinal O'Hara) came up next and singled home Priester. Teoli also scored on the play due to an error by the Keuka right fielder. After the first inning of play the Mavs led (2-0).

In the top of the second Sal Carroccia (Lackawanna, NY, St. Francis) reached base on an error. He advanced to second on a passed ball and was moved over to third by Tom Lunghino (Buffalo, NY, Kenmore West). Paul Barker (Niagara Falls, NY, Niagara Falls) came up next and he singled home Carroccia. Connor Priester was up next and he was hit by a pitch. Dominick Teoli then singled which scored Barker from second and advanced Priester to third. Priester promptly swiped home and put the Mavs up (5-0) after just two innings of play.

Medaille College Men's Lacrosse Falls In Season Opener

Barons down Mavericks 25-5

STEUBENVILLE, OH – The Medaille College Men's Lacrosse team opened their 2018 campaign on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Ohio to take on the Barons of Franciscan. While it was the first game of the year for the Mavericks it was the sixth of the season for the Barons, that additional work for Franciscan paced the Barons early and led to a 25-5 loss for the Mavs.
 
Franciscan opened the contest hot offensively taking a multi=-goal lead just minutes into the first quarter. Before the quarter ended the Mavs got two back, earning back-to-back goals from junior Tyler Fales (Batavia, NY, Batavia) and freshman Enrique Perez (Buffalo, NY, Hutch Tech). Perez' goal was the very first of his collegiate career while freshman David Cloy (Wilson, NY, Wilson) also earned his first career point in the first quarter, assisting on Fales' tally.
 
The Barons defense was stout all afternoon long, holding Medaille scoreless the rest of the first half and only allowing three goals to the Mavs in the second half.
 
Fales was a bright spot for the Mavericks though, scoring all three second half goals to give him four on the young season. Freshman Towi Oakes (Akwesasne, NY, Cornwall Collegiate) made 24 saves in net and Cloy added his second assist of the afternoon as Medaille fell to 0-1 on the season and 0-1 in AMCC play.
 
Medaille will be back in action next Saturday for their home opener against Alfred State at Nichols High School. Face off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.

Men’s Basketball Opens AMCC Play in Dominant Fashion

GREENSBURG, PA – In what can only be described as a dominating performance, the Medaille College Men's Basketball team went on the road Saturday afternoon to face the defending AMCC Champion Pitt-Greensburg Bobcats. It was all Medaille from the jump, as the Mavs left Pennsylvania with a (90-57) victory in the conference opener.

The Mavericks came out of the gates on fire against the defending AMCC Champions, taking it to the Bobcats early and often in Greensburg. Nine different Mavs found their way on the scoresheet in the opening (20) minutes of the ball game, including a team-high (12) from sophomore Meghale Ford (Laurel, MD, Theodore Roosevelt (DC)) in the first half.

Medaille got the offense going early, opening the game on an (8-0) run over the game's first two minutes. The lead surged to (17-5) after junior Mike Hollenbeck (Ontario, NY, Wayne Central) scored his third bucket of the contest, putting the Mavs up double-digits early.

That double-digit lead did nothing but grow as the first half continued, as wave after wave of Maverick offense overwhelmed the Bobcats on their home court. The Mavs shot an incredible (46.2%) from the field in the opening frame, while also connecting on (40%) of their shots from behind the three-point line.

Just as impressive was Medaille's defensive performance in the first half. The Mavericks entered halftime with a (25-20) edge in rebounds all while holding Pitt-Greensburg to under (36%) shooting from the floor.

The largest lead of the half came right before the buzzer for Medaille, as Sean Wilson (East Aurora, NY, St. Mary's of Lancaster) hit a free-throw to put the Mavs up (48-26) going into the break.

The second half was much of the same for the Mavericks, as Medaille made a statement to the rest of the AMCC that they came to play. The Maverick lead never dipped below (19) in the second half, as Medaille cruised to a (90-57) victory.

Individually there were a number of Mavericks who stood out in the conference opener. Ford (19), senior Johnathan Belton (Amherst, NY, Amherst) (15), Hollenbeck (12), junior Justice Fagan (Batavia, NY, Batavia) (11), and freshman Jonathan Smith (Accokeek, MD, Clarion Area (PA)) (10) all scored in double-figures for the Mavericks on a day where the team as a whole shot an impressive (48.6%) from the floor.

(12) Mavericks recorded at least one rebound on the afternoon as well, with Hollenbeck, Fagan, Smith, and Wilson all grabbing five to lead the way.

While the offense will catch a lot of people's eyes, it was the defense that may have been the catalyst for the dominating performance. The Mavericks forced the Bobcats to turn the ball over an astounding (28) times overall. (16) of those resulted in steals for the Blue and Gold, while Medaille also held Pitt-Greensburg to just (37.0%) shooting from the field.

Their perimeter defense was even better, allowing the Bobcats to connect on just (27.3%) from behind the three point line.

The win improved Medaille's record to (3-3) overall and (1-0) in AMCC play, as they get ready to host cross-town rival Hilbert College on Wednesday, December 7 at 8:00pm in the Sullivan Center.

Medaille College Men's Basketball Announces 2016-17 Schedule

BUFFALO, NY – The Medaille College Men's Basketball program has released their 2016-17 regular season schedule this afternoon, and there are plenty of dates to mark on the calendar over the next five months.
 
The 2016-17 Mavericks schedule is highlighted by the return of the WNY Knee and Orthopedic Surgery Tournament, as well as trips to Hofstra University and Baldwin Wallace University for the Baldwin Wallace Invitational.
 
The Men's Basketball season kicks off on Tuesday, November 15 when the Mavericks travel to take on the Knights of SUNY Geneseo in Geneseo. This will be the ninth year in a row that the Mavericks and Knights will face off, with SUNY Geneseo having taken six of the last eight meetings. Coincidentally the last Maverick win in the series came five years to the day of the season opener, when Medaille took down the Knights (76-56) on November 15, 2011.
 
"We have had a history of tight games with Geneseo State," explained Head Coach Mike Blaine.

Softball takes two from Franciscan

BUFFALO, NY – The Mavericks of Medaille College returned to action at home against the Barons of Franciscan University in an AMCC Conference twin bill.  The Mavericks head into play looking to solidify their spot in the playoffs and compete for a conference title.  The bats were hot all day for the Mavericks and they were able get two key conference wins, topping Franciscan (15-6) and (9-8).

The Barons were able to get on the board early in game one as they pushed a run across in the top half of the first inning.  Their inning came to an abrupt end when they batted out of order and had to concede an out that ended the inning.  Medaille was able to respond immediately scoring four runs of their own in the bottom half of the first inning.

The Mavericks were able to close out the game early only needing (4.5) innings to build a (9) run

BUFFALO, NY – It has been a busy week for the Medaille Maverick Baseball team, as they hosted cross town rival Hilbert College for an AMCC double header. It was the third and fourth games for the blue and gold over the past three days, after hosting the University of Rochester Tuesday and traveling to Fredonia Wednesday. Unfortunately for the Mavs they couldn't bust out of their slump, dropping two to the Hawks (10-8) and (10-4).

Game one of the twin bill looked as if it was going to go Medaille's way early, with the Mavericks taking advantage of a number of Hilbert miscues to take an (8-2) lead through five innings.

Mavericks Win with Walk Off in Home Opener

BUFFALO, NY – The Medaille College Baseball team finally opened their 2016 home schedule on Thursday afternoon, after unfavorable weather forced the cancellation of the Keuka double header just last week. The Mavs took on AMCC foe Pitt-Bradford, splitting the day with the Panthers after taking game one in dramatic fashion.

After Medaille gave up a single unearned run in the top of the first, the Maverick bats came alive following a (12) day layoff. It started with a leadoff single by Kyle Powell (Haddon Heights, NJ, Haddon Heights ), and continued when TJ Serba (Tonawanda, NY, Sweet Home) drew a walk in the very next at-bat. Two batters later Kris Kruszka (Gowanda, NY, Gowanda) hit a bomb that rolled all the way to the wall, earning his (21) RBI as Powell crossed home plate and Serba advanced to third.

BUFFALO, NY – The Medaille College Men's Soccer Team squared off this afternoon with Penn State Behrend  in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Game of the Week.

Medaille entered the game with a (9-3-1 overall, 3-0-1 AMCC) record. Penn State Behrend entered the contest with a (11-1-1 overall, 5-0-0 AMCC) record.

Medaille outshot the Lions (10-6) in the game, but the defending AMCC Champion Lions prevailed with a late goal that put them ahead (2-1).

Men's Soccer Stays Undefeated in AMCC Play with Win Over Franciscan

BUFFALO, NY – The Medaille College Men's Soccer team hosted the Barons of Franciscan on Sunday afternoon, looking to keep their unbeaten conference record alive in front of the home crowd. On a beautiful October afternoon the Mavericks were able to do just that, beating the Barons (4-2).

Medaille was able to put pressure on the Barons early, constantly testing Franciscan's back line. A hit post by senior Yggor Zignago (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Veiga de almeida) and a couple timely saves from the Baron keeper kept the score knotted at zero for the opening parts of the first half.

The Mavericks would break through in the (30') minute when following a Franciscan yellow, senior Michael Jackson (Bath, NY, Bath) soared above the Franciscan defense and headed in a beautiful free kick from senior Ian Brown (Akron, NY, Akron) for his first goal of the season. Jackson's goal proved the spark that was needed for Medaille to open the flood gates in the first half.

Just two minutes later in the (32') minute senior Cory Carter (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, St. Joseph Secondary) snipped a long range goal off of a beautiful play from freshman Moo Kpor Mu (Buffalo, NY, Riverside). The goal was Carter's fourth of the season, but the assist wasn't Mu's only contribution of the afternoon. In the (39') minute Mu set up fellow freshman Nick DuMond (Lockport, NY, Starpoint) with a gorgeous through ball, as DuMond buried his fourth goal of the year to give Medaille a (3-0) lead.

The Barons came out and gave the Mavericks a fight in the second half. Taking advantage of a Medaille turnover in their own end during the (58') minute to cut the lead to (3-1). However, junior Junior Geegba (Ivory Coast, Riverside) put the dagger in Franciscan's comeback during the (78') minute with his ninth goal of the season to give Medaille a (4-1) lead.

The Barons added another late goal, but Medaille came away with the (4-2) victory at home.

Junior keeper Brian Arcara (Orchard Park, NY, Orchard Park) stopped (3) shots in the win, as Medaille improves their record to (9-3-1) overall and (3-0-1) in the AMCC. They will put their unbeaten conference record to the test on Tuesday morning when they host the Lions of Penn State-Behrend at Johnny B. Wiley Field at 11:00 am.

Lady Mavericks Earn First Win of the Season Against Franciscan

BUFFALO, NY – The Medaille College Women's Soccer team had played in four games this season decided by (1) goal or less. Until Sunday afternoon the Lady Mavs just hadn't been able to find a way to win those close games. Until Sunday. Medaille scored the only goal of the game against Franciscan, defeating the Barons (1-0) for their first win of the season in front of the home crowd.

On an unseasonably warm October afternoon, the Lady Mavs and Lady Barons played each other very evenly throughout the day. A majority of the match saw both sides battle for possession in the midfield, with neither defense willing to concede the game's first goal.

The teams went into the locker room at halftime knotted at zero, with the match very much looking like the first score could be the game winner.

That first and crucial goal came in the (59') minute, when senior Candis Kapuscinski (Holland, NY, Holland) took the ball on a counter attack and fed a beautiful pass to sophomore Kalyn Compeau (Tonawanda, NY, Tonawanda). Compeau took the feed from Kapuscinski and buried it past the keeper on a one-on-one opportunity, giving the Lady Mavs the (1-0) lead.

However, the Lady Barons made Medaille earn every second of this hard fought win. They put an enormous amount of pressure on the Lady Mavs defense, trying to tie the game in the final moments; however, senior keeper Alea Wade (Hamburg, NY, Frontier) stood tall in net and saved all (8) shots on goal.

The shutout was the first of Wade's career, and the win improved Medaille's record to (1-9-1) overall and (1-3-0) in the AMCC. The Lady Mavs will be back in action on Tuesday, when they host the Lions of Penn State-Behrend at Johnny B. Wiley at 1:15 pm.

Women's Volleyball Beats Crosstown Rival D'Youville (3-1)

BUFFALO, NY – The Lady Mavericks Volleyball team traveled across town on Tuesday evening to take on conference rival D'Youville College. Medaille was able to get off to a fast start en route to a (3-1; 25-15, 25-18, 21-25, 25-9) victory over the Spartans.

The Lady Mavs have played particularly strong over the past two weeks, and that play continued this evening. Medaille dominated play early, jumping out to a (10) point lead while building a (10-6) cushion in the first set. The ladies were able to continue that play throughout the first set, taking set one (25-15).

Sets two and three were much closer in score; with D'Youville taking advantage of an uncharacteristically slow offensive set for Medaille in set number three. The Lady Mavs finished the third frame with a (-.073) hitting percentage, dropping their only set of the night.

However, Medaille bounced back in a major way to close out the match. In what can only be called a dominant performance, the Lady Mavs hit for (.448) percent and held D'Youville to under (10) points to secure their third conference victory of the season.

The win improves Medaille to (12-4) overall while keeping them undefeated in AMCC play with a (3-0) record.

Junior Lydia Penberthy (Amherst, NY, Sweet Home) and Jennifer Stebbins (Gowanda, NY, Gowanda) lead the offense for Medaille, both finishing the contest with a team-high (9) kills. Fellow junior Morgan Freeman (Webster, NY, Webster Thomas) chipped in with a season-high (4) service aces, while senior Jenna Cleversley (West Seneca, NY, West Seneca West) paced the Lady Mavs defensively with (19) digs.

Stebbins also added (11) digs in the victory as Medaille will not be in action again until Tuesday, October 13 when they travel to Buffalo State College for a non-conference match-up. The match is scheduled for a 7:00pm start.

Mavs comes in ninth at Elmira Invitational

ELMIRA, NY - The Medaille College Golf Team participated in the Elmira Fall Invitational this afternoon in their final tournament before the AMCC Championships.

Medaille, who was playing in the tournament and at Elmira Country Club for the first time had a rough afternoon shooting a season high (371) team score to finish in ninth place out of a field of ten.

SUNY Delhi won the tournament with a score (322).

Wyatt Gorham of SUNY Cobleskill won medalist honors with a (74).

Senior Austin Ford (Tonawanda, NY, Kenmore East) had the low score for the Mavericks, he carded two birdies on the day and finished with an (86).

The Mavericks will wrap up their regular season on Friday when they play D'Youville College in a match at Sheridan Park in their final tune-up before the Allegheny Mountain Conference Championships this Sunday and Monday.

The two-day event will be hosted by La Roche College at Avalon Country Club in Youngstown, PA.

Lady Mavericks Defeat D'Youville in Regular Season Finale

WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – The Medaille College Women's Tennis team hosted their final regular season match of the season on Tuesday afternoon, taking on the Spartans of D'Youville College in a non-conference match-up. Just hours after finding out that they had secured a berth in their first ever AMCC postseason, the Lady Mavericks used the match as a tune up, defeating D'Youville (8-1).

Medaille took control from the start, only dropping (2) games to the Spartans in doubles competition. The number one pairing of junior Liz Barrett (Sanborn, NY, Niagara-Wheatfield) and freshman Colleen Voigt (Marion, NY, Marion) beat Courtney Fox and Krista Cornell (8-1), while the number three pairing of senior Kyla Krathaus (Lancaster, NY, Lancaster) and sophomore Cho Thiri Tun (Mae Sot, Thailand, Riverside) did the same. Sophomore Samantha Dworzanski (North Tonawanda, NY, Niagara Wheatfield) and senior Emily Insinna (Alden, NY, Alden) shut out Natalie Douie and Nicole Giliforte (8-0) to give the Lady Mavs a (3-0) lead heading into singles play.

Lead by Barrett and a (6-0, 6-0) victory over Fox, Medaille went on to take five of the six singles matches as well.

The win was the Lady Mavs' second over D'Youville this season, and gave them (6) overall wins on the season. Those six wins are the most in a single season in program history; to go along with their program best (4) AMCC wins.

Medaille will be back on the court this Saturday, when they travel to Franciscan University for the first round of the AMCC Tournament. The Lady mavericks will start their first AMCC Tournament match at 2:00pm.

Lady Mavs Defeat Alfred University for Fourth Win in a Row

ALFRED, NY – The Medaille College Women's Volleyball team traveled to Alfred University Sunday afternoon for a non-conference match-up against the Saxons. Looking to continue their momentum from their huge comeback victory on Friday, Medaille took control from the beginning of the match, never letting go in route to the (3-0; 25-23, 25-16, 25-18) victory.

Set number one was the closest in terms of final score; however, it was Medaille who would take control early. After a back-and-forth start, seniors Susan Muldoon (Buffalo, NY, Mt. Mercy Academy) and Simmone Talford (Clarence, NY, Clarence) got things going with back-to-back blocks giving Medaille a (6-3) lead. The Lady Mavericks kept a comfortable (3-5) point cushion on the Saxons for much of the opening set, countering every mini-run that Alfred went on. A kill by junior Lydia Penberthy (Amherst, NY, Sweet Home) sealed the set one victory with a score of (25-23).

Medaille let their offense steal the show in the final two sets, hitting for a very impressive (.355) percentage in set number two and following that up with a (.286) hitting percentage in set number three. Their defense wasn't shabby; however, as the Lady Mavs defense held Alfred University to a (.160) hitting percentage in a second set that Medaille would take (25-16). Even more impressive was the (-.037) hitting percentage the Saxons had in the third and final set.

Muldoon led Medaille with (10) kills, while junior Marlena Clotfelter (Depew, NY, St. Mary's - Lancaster) added (8) kills of her own. Talford had (28) assists and (7) digs in the non-conference victory. The Lady Mavericks also had a total of (12) service aces on the day, with Talford, junior Jennifer Stebbins (Gowanda, NY, Gowanda), and junior Morgan Freeman (Webster, NY, Webster Thomas) all chipping in with (3) each.

The win improves Medaille to (11-4) overall, as they stay pat with a (2-0) AMCC record. It was the fourth win in a row for the Women's Volleyball team, who has won six of their last seven matches. Next up for the Lady Mavs is a conference showdown with D'Youville College on Tuesday, October 6 at D'Youville. The match is scheduled for a 7:00pm start.

Barrett Named AMCC Player of the Week

The Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference just announced this week's players of the week.

Medaille junior captain Liz Barrett (Sanborn, NY, Niagara-Wheatfield) was named the AMCC Women's Tennis Player of the Week. She played an integral role in helping the Lady Mavs go (1-1) last week.

Barrett won both of her number one singles and doubles matches last week. She defeated Alexa Holleran twice against Pitt-Bradford to help the Lady Mavs defeat the Panthers for the first time in program history. She also took home the win in singles and doubles in a tough (5-4) defeat to Fredonia State.

Talford Named AMCC Player of the Week

She recorded (80) assists in Medaille's three games last week

The Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference just announced this week's players of the week.

Medaille S Simmone Talford (Clarence, NY, Clarence) was named the AMCC Women's Volleyball Player of the Week.  She played an integral role in helping the Lady Mavs go (3-0) last week, including winning their first two AMCC matches.

Talford had 80 assists last week; including a season high (55) in Medaille's come from behind victory over Franciscan. She also added (22) kills and an impressive (.348) hitting percentage, while jumping up to number four on the all-time career service aces list.

Her (8.84) assists/set currently leads the AMCC in that category.
