Columbia WOMEN'S TENNIS COMES FROM BEHIND TO DEFEAT PENN 4-3

NEW YORK—The Columbia women’s tennis team rallied from a 3-2 deficit with back-to-back singles wins by senior co-captain Adi Milstein and junior Sarah Hu to defeat Penn 4-3 Friday afternoon at Dick Savitt Tennis Center. Columbia’s victory was its fourth consecutive win and improved the Lions to 10-5 overall and 2-0 in Ivy League play.


After Milstein tied the match at 3-3 with a 7-6, 6-0 win over Penn’s Jennifer Richards at No. 6 singles, Hu battled from behind and clinched the win for Columbia with a dramatic 1-6, 6-0, 6-4 victory over Penn’s Jimena Rodriguez-Benito.


“Sarah has been in that situation previously this year against Maryland,” Columbia Head Coach Ilene Weintraub said. “It didn’t go her way that day but I know she learned a lot from that experience and that was evident today. I’m happy to see her pull it out.”


“Our team is really having fun when they’re playing in practice and in matches,” said Weintraub of the four-match win streak. “I feel that they’re enjoying it and the tennis is coming from that. They focus every day in practice and our confidence comes from that.”


Penn claimed the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. Columbia’s No. 1 doubles combination of senior Adi Milstein and first-year Christie Wan won a 6-0 match over Penn’s Lina Quostal and Ashley Zhu to give the Lions the advantage, but Penn won consecutive matches No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.


First-year Paulina Ferrari made her first dual match lineup appearance during spring season but dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Penn’s Marta Kowalska at No. 3 singles. Junior co-captain Andrea Kevakian won a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Penn’s Ashley Zhu at No. 2 singles, then first-year Jennifer Kerr tied the match at 2-2 with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles over Penn’s Lina Quostal.


From that point on, Marija Curnic gave Penn a 3-2 advantage with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Columbia sophomore Ali Pollack. That set the stage for Milstein’s win at No. 6 singles and Hu’s heroic win at No. 4.


“Andrea played the same opponent at ECAC’s and it was a very tight match. Today, she was able to step up in the second set and dictate the tennis. Jennifer had an impressive win in the No. 1 singles position and Adi continues to be tremendously competitive at the bottom of our lineup.


Penn drops to 7-10 overall and 0-2 in Ivy League play.


Columbia is back in action on Sunday at No. 46 ranked Princeton for a 1 p.m. start.

Hamilton Women's tennis posts win in 2017-18 home debut

Three Hamilton College players won both their singles and their doubles matches, and the Continentals came away with a 6-3 non-conference win against the Union College Dutchwomen inside Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Thursday night.

Audrey Chor '21 and Ajla Karabegovic '21 teamed up for their fifth victory as a pair at second flight doubles. Chor improved her record to 9-4 as she triumphed in third flight singles, and Karabegovic defeated her opponent at fourth flight singles for her ninth win.

Ndanu Mutisya '21 and Katherine McNally '18 were winners at third flight doubles. McNally, who joined the team after the fall season, recorded her first doubles win for the Continentals (3-5 overall). Mutisya went on to even her record at 4-4 in dual matches with a victory at fifth flight singles.

Sophia Aulicino '21 posted her team-high 10th singles win when she blanked her second flight opponent, 6-0, 6-0.

Hamilton hosts nationally ranked No. 4 Wesleyan University in NESCAC action on Saturday, April 7. The Continentals will play inside Scott Field House again and the match will start at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Orange Knock Off No. 3 Georgia Tech for Biggest Win in Program History

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – In what proved to be a match for the record books, the No. 34 Syracuse Orange recorded their biggest win in program history, knocking off No. 3 Georgia Tech, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at Drumlins Country Club. The victory over Georgia Tech marked the first win over a top-10 opponent for an Orange team in program history.
 
The match came down to the first singles match between No. 9 Gabriela Knutson and No. 22 Paige Hourigan. Knutson fell behind 1-0 after dropping set one 2-6 but rallied from down in set two to take a 6-2 victory and send the match to a third and final set. The junior carried her momentum into set three, fighting for each and every point and ultimately finishing the match with four straight points in the sixth game.

William Smith sweeps Stevens 9-0

GENEVA, N.Y.-The William Smith College tennis team cruised to a 9-0 non-conference win over Stevens Institute of Technology in Bristol Field House this afternoon. With the win, the Herons improve to 5-2 on the season while the Ducks fall to 9-7.
 
William Smith took control of the match, sweeping doubles play. Senior Michaelann Denton and first-year Dina Rigas bested Julia Earl and Isabella Calandra 8-3 at No. 1. Denton and Rigas collected their team-leading sixth doubles win of the season and are 4-3 in the top spot of the lineup. Sophomores Kate Foley and Allie Perron notched an 8-2 win over Sydney Zoretic and Nicole Badalyan. First-years Olivia Engebrecht and Katelyn Nguyen wrapped up doubles play, topping Makenna Sargis and Jill Hawden 8-2 at No. 3.
 
The Herons continued their strong play in the singles matches, winning five of the six matches in straight sets. Rigas dropped only one game as she posted a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles. The win was Rigas' fourth of the season. Junior Alex Greenberg notched her fourth win of the season, besting Joilin Gomez 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6. In the top spot, Denton defeated Julia Earl 6-1, 7-6 (7-5). First-year Charlotte Engebrecht won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3, while sophomore Kate Foley posted a 6-3, 6-0 win in the second spot.
 
In the closest match of the day, sophomore Leland Barclay rallied to beat Chelsea Braithwaite 4-6, 6-4, 10-7. With the win, Barclay is a team-best 8-1 in singles play this season.
 
William Smith will be back in action on Wednesday, March 28, when it hosts Rochester. The non-conference contest is scheduled to begin a 4 p.m.

Tigers slip past Herons 6-3

ORLANDO, Fla.-The William Smith College tennis team was defeated by Colorado College 6-3 at Sanlando Park this afternoon. With the loss the Herons fall to 4-2 on the year while The Tigers are now 9-9 overall.
 
William Smith wraps up its spring break trip with a 1-1 record. The Herons are 8-2 in their last 10 matches in the Sunshine State.
 
Colorado College took a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of doubles play. Allie Burak and Jenna McDonald won 8-4 in the top spot while Annie Zlevor and Caroline James won 8-2 at No. 2. The William Smith first-year team of Charlotte Engebrecht and Katelyn Nguyen topped Madison Doerre and Simone Hal 8-5 at No. 3. Engebrecht and Nguyen are now 2-0 while playing together.
 
The Tigers clinched the match with four singles matches. William Smith earned a pair of singles victories to finish the match with three points. Sophomore Kate Foley rallied to win her match in the third spot with Tess Rubin in a super tiebreaker, 1-6, 6-4, 10-4. Foley is now 5-2 on the year, including a team-best 2-1 record in the third spot. Senior Michaelann Denton collected her second straight win, knocking off Jenna McDonald 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2. With the win, Denton improves to 5-5 on the season and 2-1 at No. 2.
 
The Herons will be back in action on Sunday, today, March 25, when they host Stevens. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 am. In Bristol Field House.

Sage Women's tennis tops Castleton on Sunday

Castleton, VT - The Sage Colleges' women's tennis team travelled to Vermont on Sunday to face the Spartans of Castleton University on Sunday. The Gators tallied a 6-3 win to improve to 4-5 overall. The loss puts Castleton at 7-6.

The Spartans gained an edge in doubles, taking two out of three points. Ciara Bannister and Kirsten Kruk improved to 2-2 on the season after taking first flight doubles 9-7. Megan Nadler and Kayla Zsido remain undefeated with a 3-0 record in doubles action after taking their match by a score of 9-7.

Nadler earned the third point for the Spartans in doubles and Zsido came close after taking one set in No. 4 singles, but the Gators of Sage took the final five points of the match to secure the victory.

Sage won No. 3 doubles as sophomore Emily Schultz (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park) and junior Shanice Mendoza (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) posted an 8-1 win.

Down 2-1 heading into the singles, Sage's rookie Sammantha Montague (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville) posted the 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles, beating Bannister.  Junior Shanessa Mendoza (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) added a win at No. 3 singles, while rookie Abbey Clobridge (West Sand Lake, NY/Averill Park), Schultz, and Shanice Mendoza all were victorious in singles as Sage won 3-6th on Sunday.

Keuka College Women’s Tennis Drops NEAC Match at Wells

AURORA, N.Y. – The Keuka College Women's Tennis team lost to host Wells College 6-3 on Wednesday in a North Eastern Athletic Conference match.

Keuka College (2-7, 2-3 NEAC) will have their final home match of the season on Friday when they host Penn College at 4pm.

The tandem of Allison Williams and Melissa Mason provided Keuka with their scoring in the match. The duo combined in second doubles to defeat Wells' team 8-6.

In singles, Williams dropped only one game, winning second singles 6-1, 6-0. Melissa Mason also won her singles match at fourth singles. Although she dropped the first set 7-5, Mason rallied in the second, winning it 6-2 to force a 10-point tiebreaker. Mason controlled the extra frame, winning the tiebreaker 10-4. It would be the only two points Keuka would get in singles, however, as they fell to Wells College 6-3.

Wells College Benedetto Breaks Career Doubles Wins Record In Win

AURORA, N.Y. – Senior Brooke Benedetto (Williamstown, N.Y.) of the Wells College women's tennis team broke the program record for career doubles victories on Wednesday as the Express set down Keuka College by a 6-3 margin. Wells moves to 5-6 overall and to 4-2 within the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Keuka drops to 2-7 and 2-3 within league play. 

With a career doubles record of 29-26, Benedetto has eclipsed Antoinette Ptak '84 who recorded at least 28 doubles wins from 1980 to 1983. While statistics from the early 1980's are considered partially incomplete, Benedetto is far and away the doubles wins leader for Wells in the NCAA Division III era (1986-present).

Herons sweep Cortland for second straight win

CORTLAND, N.Y.-The William Smith College tennis team swept Cortland 9-0 in its final non-conference match this afternoon. The win improves the Herons to 9-6 on the season.

William Smith took command early, sweeping doubles. Junior Katarina Kostovic and first-year Alex Greenberg did not drop a game as they won 8-0 at No. 2. In the top spot, junior Hannah More and sophomore Michaelann Denton improved to 15-5 as a duo when they cruised to an 8-2 victory. Sophomore Alex Cattie and first-year Sydney Ferry added a doubles point with an 8-2 win at No. 3.

In singles play, the Herons posted straight set victories in all six matches. Greenberg, Denton, and Ferry won their contests 6-0, 6-0. Greenberg and Denton collected their 13th wins of the season today. At No. 1, More extended her winning streak to nine matches when she knocked off Mia Hayes, 6-1, 6-0.  More is a team-best 16-4 this season.  First-year Connie Froass also posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6, besting Elise Cusimano. Kostovic added a singles point at No. 4, defeating Cati O'Rourke 6-0, 6-2.

William Smith will be back in Liberty League play to close out its season. The Herons Will travel to Vassar next Saturday and then play Rensselaer the next day.

Raptors drop final Liberty League match of 2016

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College women's tennis team lost to St. Lawrence University, 9-0, in a Liberty League match on Saturday.

It was the final home match of 2016 for Bard, and the final Liberty League match of the season as well.

St. Lawrence (10-5 overall, 4-1 Liberty League) gave up just a game in sweeping three doubles matches, and won all six singles matches in straight sets.

Wells College Women's Tennis Earns 7-2 Victory vs. Lancaster Bible

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College women's tennis team picked up a 7-2 victory over visiting Lancaster Bible College on Friday. With the win, the Express move to 4-5 overall on the year and to 3-1 within the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Lancaster Bible dips to 2-8 on the season, moving to 1-4 against league opponents. 

Wells has now won 24 of its last 30 regular season conference matches dating back to the 2011-12 women's tennis season with the result. The Express have also defeated Lancaster Bible in all five of the all-time meetings between the two programs. 

The Express picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively, to earn a 2-1 lead through the first three matches of the day. Senior Kevisha Hunt (Germantown, Md.) partnered with junior Nicole Sanborn (Onondaga, N.Y.) to secure an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles before the tandem of sophomore Kamarie Maturine (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and classmate Kate Wells (Gardner, Mass.) swept their match, 8-0. 

Senior Brooke Benedetto (Williamstown, N.Y.), who fell alongside partner Yuna Furusawa (Hirakata, Osaka, Japan) at No. 1 doubles, rebounded to earn a quality 6-2, 6-3 win at the top singles slot. Maturine earned a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles while Hunt closed her No. 3 singles match out strong with a 6-3, 6-0 result. 

Furusawa cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles while Wells swept the No. 6 singles match, using a 6-0, 6-0 score to bump the Express to its seventh victory of the day.

Vassar Wins Second Straight Seven Sisters Championship

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY  — For the second year in a row, the Vassar College women's tennis team went undefeated on its way to winning the annual Seven Sisters Championship on Sunday.

Just like last year, Vassar and Wellesley College both went into the final match undefeated, with the Brewers coming out on top for the trophy.

Vassar has now won the title 13 times since the first Championship in 1983. Since 1999, the winner has either been Vassar or Wellesley, with the Brewers taking 10 of those and the Blue securing eight.

This year, Kate Christensen and doubles pairs Hanna McGuire and Shayna Becker and Morgane Flournoy and Kelsey Van Noy, were named to the All-Seven Sisters Team. Christensen won all three of her matches at No. 1 singles to pick up her 12th win on the season. Doubles duo, McGuire and Becker, won all three of their matches to secure their seventh win together, while Flournoy and Van Noy won all four of their matches to notch their fifth.

After beating Bryn Mawr College and Smith College with 5-0 shutouts on Day 1 of the Championship, Vassar took down Mount Holyoke College and Wellesley with 4-1 scores on Day 2.

Against the Mount Holyoke Lyons, the Brewers dominated in doubles. At one, Becker and McGuire defeated Ishita Tibrewal and Madison Rosen, 6-1, 6-0, before Van Noy and Flournoy took down Amy Chen and Ciara Wang, 6-3, 6-2, at two.

Moving onto singles, Connie Yoo handed Michelle Cai a 6-0, 6-0 bagel at three before Christensen fought Ayame Yazawa for a 7-5, 6-2 win at one. Morgan Fitzgerald fought all the way to a super tiebreaker, but Margaux Holloschutz ultimately came out on top, 5-7, 7-6 (7-1), 10-8.

Against the Wellesley Blue, the Brewers again set the tone in doubles. At two, Flournoy and Van Noy defeated Emily Olson and Rosanne Hu, 6-2, 6-3, before McGuire and Becker beat Samantha Stone and Dasha Kostikina, 6-2, 6-2, at one.

In singles, the Blue tried to make a comeback, as Justine Huang topped Courtney Geiss, 6-2, 6-1, at two. But the Brewers continued to battle, securing the team win — and the championship —with Fitzgerald's 6-1, 6-3 win over Tristan Lorich at three. Christensen rounded the tournament with a grind-it-out victory over Carina Chen, 7-6, 6-2 (7-1), at one.

The Vassar women's tennis team plays its penultimate home game of the regular season against Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday, April 16 at noon.

Wells Women's Tennis Blanks St. Elizabeth, 9-0

MORRISTOWN, N.J. – The Wells College women's tennis team overwhelmed the Eagles from the College of Saint Elizabeth on Sunday, picking up a 9-0 road conference victory. Wells moves to 3-5 overall and to 2-1 within the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Saint Elizabeth remains winless in six matches on the year. 

Wells has won 23 of its last 29 regular season conference matches dating back to the 2011-12 women's tennis season after Sunday's result. 

The Express completely blanked its opponents in five different flights on Sunday, not allowing a single set point. The No. 1 doubles duo of senior Brooke Benedetto (Williamstown, N.Y.) and Yuna Furusawa (Hirakata, Osaka, Japan) earned an 8-0 victory before senior Kevisha Hunt (Germantown, Md.) and junior Nicole Sanborn (Onondaga, N.Y.) secured an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles. 

After a forfeit by Saint Elizabeth at No. 3 doubles, Benedetto earned a No. 1 singles win by a 6-0, 6-0 score. Sophomore Kamarie Maturine (Brooklyn, N.Y.) followed that performance up with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles before Hunt notched a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles. Sanborn and Furusawa collected back-to-back 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively. 

Saint Elizabeth forfeited its match at No. 6 singles, rounding out the final score for the Express.

Wells will conclude the regular season of play with four-straight home matches. The Express will take on Lancaster Bible College on Friday, Apr. 15 at 3 p.m. in Aurora.

Saints top Herons 7-2

CANTON, N.Y. - The William Smith College tennis team fell 7-2 to St. Lawrence in a Liberty League contest in Newell Field House this afternoon. The Herons fall to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the Liberty League.

The Saints (9-5, 3-1) lost just one game in doubles play to take an early 3-0 lead in the match.  St. Lawrence won 8-0 at Nos. 2 and 3 and 8-1 in the top spot.

In singles play, junior Hannah More won her sixth-straight match to improve to 14-4 on the season. She defeated Morgan McNeal at No. 1, 6-2, 6-3. First-year Alex Greenberg collected William Smith's other point at No. 2 singles. She topped Emily Wyman 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). The win was Greenberg's fourth-straight and she is now 11-7 in her rookie campaign.

The Herons will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Nazareth. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Defending Champion Brewers Undefeated So Far In Seven Sisters

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY  — The defending champion Vassar College women's tennis team is tied for first place with Wellesley College after Day 1 of the annual Seven Sisters Championship.

The hosting Brewers and the visiting Blue both have two points thus far. Vassar beat Bryn Mawr College and Smith College by scores of 5-0, while Wellesley topped Mount Holyoke College and Smith by the same scores.

Mount Holyoke holds third place with one point after beating Bryn Mawr 4-1, while Bryn Mawr and Smith are tied for last place with zero points after their losses.

Herons edge Ithaca 6-3 for second straight win

GENEVA, N.Y. - The William Smith College tennis team collected a 6-3 win over Ithaca in Bristol Field House this afternoon. With the win, the Herons improve to 3-2 in dual matches this season.

William Smith swept doubles play to take a 3-0 lead in the overall match. Junior Hannah More and sophomore Michaelann Denton cruised to an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles, defeating Haley Kusak and Shayna Ginster. At No. 2, first-year Alex Greenberg and Katarina Kostovic posted an 8-4 victory. Sophomore Alex Cattie and first-year Connie Froass out lasted Ithaca's Mami Blumenthal and Maddie OVerholt 9-7 at No. 3 doubles.

First-year Sydney Ferry bested Jodi Grosberg 6-2, 7-6(7-4) to give the Herons a 4-0 lead in the match. More clinched the overall match for William Smith with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Kusak at No. 1 singles. This is the second time this season that More defeated Kusak, who entered the weekend with an 11-1 mark in singles play. Denton's second win of the day came at No. 2 singles. She defeated Caroline Dunn 6-2, 6-1.

William Smith will return to action on March 14 when the Herons play Springfield College in Orlando, Fla.

#24 Tennis Topped By #55 NC State

RALEIGH, N.C.- Freshman Gabriela Knutson picked up a win in both doubles and singles play for the No. 24 Syracuse women's tennis team, but it was not enough as the Orange fell to No. 55 North Carolina State by the final score of 5-2.

Knutson and teammate junior Valeria Salazar moved to 6-0 on the season in their doubles victory for Syracuse (8-3, 2-3 ACC). North Carolina State (8-3, 2-2 ACC) utilized five singles victories to defeat the Orange.

After sophomore Nicole Mitchell and freshman Maria Tritou were downed 6-0 to Bianca Moldovan and Joanna Nalborska, the Orange bounced back with two straight doubles wins to take the point. Graduate student Anna Shkudun and freshman Dina Hegab defeated Amanda Rebol and Claudia Wiktorin 6-4 before Knutson and Salazar won 6-4 over Martina Frantova and Tayla Stenta.

Senior Day ends with setback

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Olivia Miller (Springwater, N.Y.) was Fredonia's lone winner in Tueday's 8-1 women's tennis loss to Alfred.

A freshman playing No. 1 singles, Miller scored a 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) victory over Alfred's Rachel Cook.

Winners of their previous three matches, the Blue Devils fell to 6-5 heading into their SUNYAC Tournament match 4:30 p.m. Friday vs. New Paltz at the Binghamton Tennis Center. Alfred improved to 3-9.

Fredonia's lone, senior Jessica Young (Port Allegany, Pa./Southwestern), was recognized in a ceremony prior to her last home match Tuesday.
