Stony Brook Takes the Series From Binghamton

ITHACA, N.Y.—The Stony Brook softball team took down Binghamton in the final game of the series 10-0 in five innings. Throughout the weekend the Seawolves tallied 29 runs on 24 hits.

We left it all on the field today and showed real toughness in bitter cold weather. Each America East opportunity is important and we responded well this weekend," said head coach Megan T. Bryant.
 
Highlights

• The Seawolves got on the board first as Jourdin Hering (Federal Way, Wash.) led off the game with a walk and later scored on a double to right center by Melissa Rahrich (Brighton, Colo.). With bases loaded Taylor Pechin (Harrington, Del.) grounded out to second base allowing Ileana Torres (Debary, Fla.) to score. Rahrich and Irene Rivera (Sylmar, Calif.) scored after an error by the Binghamton's third baseman to make the lead 4-0.
• Stony Brook added to their lead in the top of the third. With bases loaded Katelyn Corr (Suffield, Conn.) hit a sacrifice fly into left field to score Rahrich. Rivera then scored on a ground ball to first base hit by Craig. 
• Nicole McCarvill (Clifton Park, N.Y.) got the Seawolves going in the top of the fourth with a lead off single to right field.McCarvill scored after Rahrich drew a bases loaded walk. Back to back singles by Corr and Craig scored two more runs to extend Stony Brook's lead to 10-0.
• Melissa Rahrich threw her third shut out game of the season and only allowed two hits in five innings.

Morrisville State swept by Gallaudet in NEAC divisional cross over

WASHINGTON, DC – The Morrisville State College softball team dropped two divisional cross over games to host Gallaudet University Friday afternoon, falling 4-0 in game one, followed by a 4-1 decision in the nightcap, held in Washington, DC.

The loss drops the Mustangs to 3-9 on the season, 0-4 within North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play.

Bailey Dillabough (Massena, N.Y.) and Allyson Kowalczyk (Hinesdale, Mass.) each registered a hit at the plate for the Mustangs, Dillabough going 1-for-3 that included a triple shot to center field, and Kowalczyk a single to short.

Allison McGuire (Gilboa, N.Y.) threw the loss on the mound, pitching the complete game and allowing four earned runs. McGuire collected four strikeouts.

Both teams battled defensively until the bottom of the fifth inning when Gallaudet broke through to put runs up on the board and break the scoreless tie. The Bison collected six straight hits that included a two run single to right center, followed by a two run double to right field, claiming a 4-0 lead.

Morrisville State attempted a rally in the top of the sixth, after Dillabough slammed the triple to center, but that's as close as the Mustangs would get to scoring as the Bison registered the ground out and collected two strikeouts in the top of the seventh to seal the win.

In the nightcap, Gallaudet opened with three runs in the bottom of the first, and added another in the fifth, before the Mustangs were able to cross home.

Amanda Labe (Friedensburg, Pa.) scored Morrisville State's lone run in the top of the sixth inning after reaching on a single, stealing second and reaching home on an error. Labe went 1-for-3 from the plate, as did McGuire and Dillabough, with Dillabough collecting a double to left in the opening evening.

Brooke Terrier (Hubbardsville, N.Y.) threw a complete game for the Mustangs in the loss, allowing two earned runs, while posting a strikeout.

Morrisville State returns to the field Sunday, wrapping up cross divisional play with a dual at Lancaster Bible College.

Keuka College Softball Swept at Penn St.-Berks

READING, Pa. — The Keuka College Softball team lost a pair of games on Saturday afternoon at Penn St.-Berks in a North Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Keuka College (1-7, 0-2 NEAC) lost the opener 7-1 and fell in the nightcap to the Nittany Lions 6-1.

Penn St.-Berks 7 vs. Keuka College 1

Penn St.-Berks struck first on Saturday as they got an RBI single in the bottom of the second for a 1-0 lead. They added four runs in the bottom of the fourth before Keuka College got on the board.

Maddie Dupuis singled down the left field line to score Brittany Vergason in the top of the fifth inning. Berks responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning as they defeated Keuka College 7-1 in Game 1.

Lead Wolf: Mickenzie Palmer singled in the sixth inning for Keuka College. It was the 100th hit of her career.

Penn St.-Berks 6 vs. Keuka College 1

The Nittany Lions got a solo home run in the first inning for the 1-0 lead. Keuka College tied it in the third. Jessie Hammers singled to center. With two outs, Hammers scored from first as Mickenzie Palmer doubled to right for the Wolves. She would be stranded at third in the inning, but the game was tied at 1-1.

A pair of doubles in the bottom of the third gave Berks a quick response as they plated three in the inning to take the lead back. The Nittany Lions added two insurance runs in the fifth on their way to the 6-1 victory.

Lead Wolf: Jessie Hammers had a pair of hits in the game for Keuka College.

KC Notes:

• Penn St.-Berks took an 11-10 lead all-time against Keuka College in their first regular season meeting since the 2010 season
• Keuka College and Penn St.-Berks have met in the last two NEAC Championships with the home team winning each tournament (Keuka College in 2016, Penn St.-Berks in 2017)

Gabay Leads Rams to Sweep of Gothic Knights

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State softball team hosted New Jersey City University for a non-conference doubleheader this afternoon in their home opener and won the first game, 5-2, before taking the second by a score of 8-3. Rams freshman Nicole Gabay (Medford, N.Y.) pinch-hit and drove in the game-winning run in the first game and pitched three scoreless innings of relief in the second to lead FSC to the sweep of the Gothic Knights.

NJCU (4-12) took an early 2-0 advantage in the first inning of game one on a two-run double to left by senior center fielder Julie Squeo (Carlstadt, N.J.).

Farmingdale State (4-10) tied the game in the fifth inning on a Lexie Collard (Deer Park, N.Y.) double to score sophomore center fielder Ginger Sherry (Islip, N.Y.) and a sacrifice fly by junior first baseman Sierra Cardenales (Patchogue, N.Y.), which scored L. Collard.

With runners on first and second and one out in the bottom of the sixth, Gabay came off the bench and hit a pinch-hit single up the middle to score sophomore right fielder Sabrina Bencivenga (Sayville, N.Y.) and put the Rams ahead, 3-2. In their next at-bat, L. Collard hit a two-run triple to center to extend the FSC advantage to 5-2.

After New Jersey City hit a leadoff single in the top of the seventh, junior pitcher Jaxie Collard (Deer Park, N.Y.) forced a foul out to first and a 5-4-3 double play to secure the 5-2 victory.

L. Collard finished 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI's and a run scored, while sophomore second baseman Jessica Lombardo(Levittown, N.Y.) tallied two hits.

J. Collard pitched a complete game to earn the win and improve her overall record to 3-4 on the season.

The Gothic Knights scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first inning of game two to take a 2-0 lead. The Rams would answer in the bottom half as Lombardo hit an RBI single to score junior shortstop Christina Rayfield (Commack, N.Y.) and Cardenales followed with an RBI triple to tie the game. Cardenales later scored on a wild pitch to put the Rams ahead by one, 3-2.

After scoring an unearned run in the second inning, FSC increased their lead to 6-2 in the third on an RBI groundout by junior center fielder Aleysha Midgett (Huntington, N.Y.) and an RBI single up the middle from freshman catcher Haley Schmeiser (Northport, N.Y.).

With Farmingdale State leading 7-3 in the top of the fifth inning, New Jersey City hit three straight singles to load the bases with none out. Gabay entered the game to pitch and forced a line out and foul out to third before striking out the next batter to escape the jam.

Gabay only allowed two NJCU baserunners the rest of the way as the Rams earned the game two win, 8-3.

Cardenales was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in the second game with an RBI and two runs scored, while Lombardo, Midgett and Schmeiser each tallied a hit, one run scored and an RBI.

Sophomore Julia Walpole (Mahopac, N.Y.) (1-2) earned her first win of the season after striking out five over four innings of work. Gabay recorded the save pitching three scoreless innings in relief.

Hilbert College Softball Opens AMCC With DH Loss at La Roche

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - After a quick change in game date and site location was determined, the Hilbert Hawks traveled down to La Roche College this morning in order to play their first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference softball double header this spring season.

The Hawks struggled to connect at the plate facing an impressive pitching staff today.  Hilbert finished with six hits on the day as they suffered an 8-0 defeat and then a 9-1 night cap loss.  

Jenna Castricone went 2-for-3 at the plate and Marisa McIntyre covered the circle for Hilbert in the twin bill today.

Morgan Grosch and Jenna Castricone earned both of Hilbert's hits through the five inning game.

Cortland Wins A Slugfest; Darkness Halts Game Two

CORTLAND, N.Y. – SUNY Cortland staged a stunning comeback in the bottom of the 10th inning to post a 12-9 softball victory over the University of Rochester on Monday afternoon.  The Red Dragons scored six runs, five coming with two outs.
 
In the scheduled second game, the Yellowjackets fell behind 4-0 after two innings, then rallied to tie the score at 5-5 in the fourth and were still batting when darkness fell. The coaches will look for a possible continuation date in the near future. If it cannot be continued, all the stats will be abandoned and it becomes a "no-game".
 
Somehow, that almost makes sense considering how wild the opener was. Cortland led, 2-0, after one. Rochester tied it on the first of Gianna Melillo's two two-run home runs. Cortland edged ahead, 3-2 in the third and stretched it to 5-2 in the fourth after scoring two more times.
 

Petricca had two hits, two runs, and an RBI.

Rochester pulled within 5-4 on run-scoring doubles by Harleigh Kaczegowicz and Lydia Petricca. Cortland replaced starter Sam VanDorn with Courtney Kane after the Petricca double. She hit Melillo with a pitch, but fanned Jocelynn Blackshear to end the fifth. Cortland got one back in the fifth. Ericka Sadowski singled, took third on a double by Tori Scharff, and scored on a groundout by Averee May.
 
In the Rochester sixth, Alicia Bagan singled. Sammi Re bunted and the throw to second pulled the fielder off the bag, putting two on with no outs. Kane struck out Marissa Russo before Ann Marie Cortes bunted the runners into scoring position. Van Dorn returned after Kane hit Kaczegowicz to load the bases. Alexis Pope singled up the middle for two runs.
 
That tied it at 6-6 and Rochester started Hannah Leahy drew from the rally, getting into a nice groove. Over the next four innings, she allowed two singles and a walk, never more than one in an inning. Cortland did threaten to break the tie in a walk-off eighth. May singled and was bunted to second. UR's Jessica Conforti made two nice plays at second. She threw out Schoonmaker with May crossing to third with two outs. Then she backhanded a grounder by Hoyt and nipped her at the bag to send the game to the ninth still 6-6.
 
Neither side broke through until the 10th. Petricca was placed at second on the tiebreaker rule. Melillo followed with her second HR, this time to right field. Blackshear singled through the left side and Bailyn Piecewicz ran for her. VanDorn was replaced by Cady Walts. She got Conforti on a foulout. Re bunted Piecewicz to second. Russo struck out, but the ball rolled free. It was thrown away down the first base line which allowed Piecewicz to score UR's ninth run as Russo held at first.
 
In the Cortland 10th, the Red Dragons strung together four straight hits after a forceout put May on first with two down and one run in. Kelly O'Gorman singled to right. Shoonmaker and Hoyt hit infield singles, the Hoyt base hit tying the score. Feldman hit a three-run HR to left to win it.
 
Game Two:
Right now, it does not exist. If it is completed, all the stats and results will count officially. Cortland scored three unearned runs in the first. The lead went to 4-0 in the second. Petricca's two-run home run put Rochester on the board (4-2)  in the third. Scharff homered for Cortland (5-2 in the third).
 
In the UR fourth, Blackshear was one first and Jen Carson hit a pinch-hit two-run home run in place of Conforti, getting UR to within 5-4. Russo reached on an error with two down. Tori Hahn doubled to left, bringing home Russo with the fifth run. She took third when the relay was thrown away. Kaczegowicz was coming to the plate when darkness hit.
 
Elizabeth Bourne pitched three innings for Rochester, allowing five runs (two earned), six hits, no walks and one strikeout. Joelle Salisbury yielded seven hits, one walk, and fanned two. Four of the five runs against her were earned through the time when the game was abandoned.
 
Rochester is 3-10 after the game one slugfest. Cortland is 8-9.

Mavericks Drop a Pair to Houghton College

Opening loss to Highlanders takes an extra frame to settle

HOUGHTON, NY - The Medaille Mavericks Softball team took to the road to play the Houghton College Highlanders on Thursday afternoon. Though there was travel for the blue and gold, the Mavericks would be serving as the home team due to inclement and poor weather conditions in Buffalo.

The cloudy conditions in the Houghton area proved to be a foreshadowing for the Medaille attack on this day, as doom and gloom was the name of the game as the offense was only able to muster up two total runs of offense as the Highlanders came away with a clean sweep. While game one was a tight pitcher's duel (3-2, F/8 innings), game two was no contest as Houghton absolutely ran away with the nightcap triumph (8-0).

Here's how the games played out:

GAME 1

After a scoreless first inning, it was the Highlanders who jumped out to the (1-0) advantage on the strength of an infield single with a runner on third base.

Medaille answered back an inning later, as in the bottom of the third frame Samantha Klein (Lancaster, NY, Lancaster) popped a solo homerun to knot the score up at (1).

That was all the scoring that would occur for either side through seven innings of play. On came extra innings, where it was Houghton who tallied the first (and only) multi-score inning of game one. A two-run double vaulted the Highlanders out to a huge (3-1) lead, applying pressure to the Mavericks who now only had three outs to come up with at least two runs of their own.

Though a retaliation was concocted, Medaille was only able to eke out a single run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Mercedes Sulzbach (West Seneca, NY, West Seneca East)'s RBI groundout pulled the blue and gold to within a run, but their offensive attack was once again stalled as Houghton snuck by the Mavericks by the final score of (3-2).

GAME 2

Game two was all Houghton as they scored in four out of seven times at-bat, en route to a convincing (8-0) victory over the blue and gold. Three of those four innings produced multiple runs. Paired with their prolific attack at the plate was a strong pitching performance from their junior two-way player Kaylee Jentsch. Jentsch frustrated the Mavericks attack all game. Though she only registered three strikeouts, she was able to generate weak, early contact and utilized a heavy sinkerball to induce (11) groundouts off the Medaille bats.

The Mavericks went (6) for (25) at the plate against Jentsch. Medaille's lone multi-hit effort in the game two loss came from Morgan Bedford (Newfane, NY, Newfane), tallied two knocks in three at-bats.
