Big Eighth Inning Propels Lakers to Victory

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State baseball team came from behind late to defeat the University of Rochester, 11-7, at home on Wednesday afternoon. With the victory, the Lakers improve to 17-6 on the season, while Rochester falls to 6-10.

Oswego jumped out to an early lead in the opening inning. With a full count, reigning Oswego State Athlete of the Week Ryan Enos led off the game by smacking a double down the left field line. Enos moved to third on a single by Brandon Nicholson and then came around to score on a grounder by Mike Dellicarri.

The next inning, the Laker bats quickly got to the Rochester starter again. Matt Deblasio led off with a double to right center, and Kevin Hylas knocked him in with a single.

Rochester put up two runs in the fourth and five runs in the fifth, but the Lakers fought back late. In the seventh inning, Dellicarri notched his second RBI of the game when he ripped a triple to left center to drive in Nicholson. A Yellowjacket error later in the inning cut the deficit to just three runs.

The next inning was crucial for Oswego. Hylas led off the eighth with a walk and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Pinch hitter Myles Kutscher then came through with a clutch single to knock in Hylas for Oswego's fifth run of the game. Later in the inning, with runners on first and second for Nicholson, the junior sent a double to left field to tie the game.

The Lakers grabbed the lead when Dellicarri singled to score Nicholson. The next three Laker batters, John Barnes, Eli Holton and Deblasio, put together a string of hits to extend Oswego's lead to 11-7. That was all the Lakers would need, as Rochester was unable to score in the ninth and the Lakers secured their victory.

Starter Nick Demarco finished the day with two earned runs in 3.2 innings pitched. Demarco was followed by Matt Zakala, who allowed four earned runs over 0.2 innings. The next five relievers for Oswego were flawless; Ben Geiger, Anthony Pacifico, Brad Wroblewski, Matt Disalvo and Robert Donnelly did not allow a run from the Yellowjackets and gave up just two hits.

Oswego remains at home at 3 p.m. on Friday, returning to conference action as it hosts Brockport for the start of a three-game series.

Win Streak Continues as Lakers Take Two From Roos

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State baseball team defeated SUNY Canton in both games of their doubleheader on Monday, extending its win streak to eight games. During game one, a big fourth inning propelled the Lakers to a 6-1 win. In the second game, Oswego's bats came alive late to lift the team to an 8-4 win. With the victories, Oswego improves to 13-5 on the season, while Canton falls to 4-14.

Oswego continued its trend from the weekend of dominant starting pitching with Bobby Zywicki. The junior gave up just one run in five innings of work, striking out six Canton batters and not issuing a single walk. Mike Abrams came on in relief, giving up only one hit without allowing a run or walk in two innings.

Offensively, the Lakers quickly erased a 1-0 deficit in the second inning. Lukas Olsson led off the inning with a walk and later came around to score on a single up the middle by Josh Hoagland.

In the fourth inning, the Lakers piled on the runs. Rocco Leone knocked in the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly, and a bases-loaded walk shortly after put Oswego's third run on the board.

With the bases loaded later in the inning, reigning SUNYAC Athlete of the Week Mike Dellicarri came up to bat. Dellicarri ripped a single down the right field line, and an error by the Canton right fielder allowed the Lakers to put up three runs on the play.

In game two, hitting was the name of the game. After Canton took a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth, Oswego chipped away. In the bottom half of the inning, Eli Holton singled to left field to drive in Dellicarri and Ryan Enos, pulling the Lakers within a run.

The next inning, with Zach Whelan on second and two outs, Robert Donnelly came through with a clutch single to bring home Whelan and tie the game.

Oswego broke the tie in the eighth inning, putting up four runs on the board to take its first lead of the game. Nick Demarco closed out the game for the Lakers to seal the win.

Demarco pitched 4.2 innings for Oswego, allowing just one hit and no earned runs while striking out seven Canton batters. Starter Ronald Loomis pitched 4.1 innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits.

Oswego returns to the diamond at 4 p.m. on Wednesday when it hosts St. Lawrence.

Oswego Second Half Surge Not Enough in Loss to Brockport

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's lacrosse team suffered a tough 17-14 loss to Brockport in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener on Saturday afternoon at Laker Turf Stadium. With the loss, the Lakers fall to 4-3 on the year while the Golden Eagles move to 1-6.

In the early portion of the first half, Oswego and Brockport traded blows to the tune of a 3-3 tie at 16:12. The Golden Eagles were able to register the game's next five goals over a little less than seven minutes to own an 8-3 advantage. Both squads scored twice more in the final 10 minutes of the opening period, resulting in a 10-5 halftime lead for Brockport.

Oswego applied pressure in the early goings of the second stanza, scoring four-straight out of the break. In that stretch, Teresa Shattuck scored twice while Toni Laneve and Brigid Regin each had one. After a Golden Eagle goal, Regin and Montana Garrett tallied back-to-back notches to knot the game again, this time at 11-11. Two-straight goals by Brockport was the difference as Oswego was unable to get closer than one the rest of the way.

Every Laker that found the goal column had multiple point efforts, paced by Shattuck's seven-point contest on two goals and five assists. Laneve and Regin accumulated the most goals with three apiece while Riley Jaquin, Gemme O'Kane and Garrett each had two.

On defense, Danielle Walker had an outstanding day with five caused turnovers and two ground balls. Goalie Angela Ponto had the most ground balls for Oswego, tallying four.
Shattuck won a team-high three draws for the Lakers while Regin added two and Garrett nabbed another.

In net, Ponto made 12 saves for Oswego

The Lakers will return to the field at 4 p.m. on Tuesday when they travel to the North Country to face the Bears of Potsdam.

Oswego Dominates Utica for Best Start Since 2013

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's lacrosse team continued its dominant start to the 2018 campaign with a convincing 15-7 victory over Utica College on Wednesday afternoon at Laker Turf Stadium. With the victory, the Lakers improve to 6-1 on the year – its best start since the 2013 squad also opened 6-1 – while the Pioneers drop to 3-4.

Oswego scored the game's first 11 goals through the majority of the first half. Utica tallied its only goal of the opening 30 minutes on a man-up situation with 1:12 left in the second quarter. The Lakers scored the only three goals of the third quarter to own a 14-1 advantage before bringing in reserves for the final 15 minutes.

Bobby Emerson tied for a game-high with four goals, leading the Lakers in points as well (4). Also tallying multiple-point games were Caleb Alford, Kyle Bacon, Robbie Connors, Jarrod Wilkom, Tyler Nason, Mark Niechcial and Tim Schof. Alford had three points on two goals and an assist while Connors, Wilkom and Bacon matched Alford's goal total. Nason, Niechcial and Schof each finished with two points as Schof and Niechcial had two helpers apiece and Nason scored once and distributed one assist.

Rounding out the Lakers with points were John Petrelli and Alex Sprague-Getsy with a goal each while Greg Manno had an assist.

In total, Oswego racked up 39 ground balls to Utica's 20, paced by Kyle O'Connor's five. The faceoff specialist was solid at the X, winning 10 of his 15 attempts. Harrison Gardiner and Nate Bizub each took five faceoffs late in the game, with both winning two apiece.

Oswego's defense was overwhelming on the day, forcing 16 Utica turnovers while the Pioneers could only turn the Lakers over four times. Jack Lavelle, Seamus Burns, Alex Sprague-Getsy and Keif Manuel paced Oswego with two caused turnovers each, making up half the Lakers' total.

Between the pipes, Kevin O'Donnell stopped four shots and allowed just one in 45 minutes of work. Brody Carter played the final quarter in net for the Lakers, making two saves.

Oswego will return to the field at 3 p.m. on Saturday when it hosts Brockport for the first game of its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) slate.
