Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning, Kevin Donati hit a one out double to right field and scored after two past balled from St. John’s to put the Danes down by one.
The Red Storm responded in the top of the third inning with a seven-run inning, including a three-run home run from Jesse Berardi that cleared the center field wall, to put St. John’s up 9-1.
In the bottom of the third inning, Kyle Sacks hit a double into the left field corner to score Patrick
Lagravinese and Donati, giving St. John’s just a 9-3 lead.
The Danes had the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the sixth, but were unable to score any runs after three consecutive outs ended the inning.
In the top of the seventh, Berardi hit his second homerun of the game, that brought in Anthony Brocato, who had reached on an error from Donati and put St. John’s up 11-3.
St. John’s added another eight runs in the top of the eighth inning, including a two-run triple to left center field off the bat of Gui Gingras that scored Brocato and Josh Shaw. Michael Donadio added a RBI double to right field that scored Alex Caruso.
Offensively Will Miller put together a 2-for-5 day and Kyle Sacks went 1-for-4 with two runs scored.
For St. John’s, Berardi hit a .500 on the day with five RBI’s and two runs scored.
Brian Paulino (1-3) pitched just 1.1 innings and allowed five earned runs on six hits in the loss for the Great Danes.
Sam Decelle, Angelo Spedafino, Joe Romero and Terry Dugdale all pitched in relief. Spedafino had the longest outing of 4.2 innings and allowed one earned run on three hits and struck out four batters.
Michael LoPresti (1-0) earned his first victory of the year, pitching 5.0 innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits and struck out seven batters.
The Danes return to Varsity Field for a weekend series with St. Peter’s, with game one of Saturday’s doubleheader beginning at noon.
