Buffalo State Women’s Lacrosse topples Potsdam, 10-4

BUFFALO, N.Y.— Nina Schaefer (Lafayette/Lafayette) and Kendall Skuse (Churchville/Churchville-Chili) each finished with three goals as Buffalo State used a fast start to cruise to a 10-4 win over visiting Potsdam in today's SUNYAC contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Schaefer tallied five points by adding two assists, while Skuse finished with three points.
• Christina Krowel (Amseterdam/B.H.-B.L) added two goals late and finished with an assist.
• Jackie Dufresne (Lake View/Frontier) tallied a goal and two assists and Ally Ruggieri (Brockport/Brockport) also scored.
• Buffalo State opened the game with a pair of goals within the first two minutes of action to take an early 2-0 lead.
• The Bengals extended its lead when Skuse scored a hat-trick in a span of five minutes to push the lead to 5-0. Buffalo State tacked on a final goal by Dufresne to extend its lead to 6-0 at halftime.
• Potsdam responded in the opening minutes of the second half, with a goal on three shots to cut the lead to 6-1.
• Schaefer completed her hat-trick with back-to-back goals to push the lead back to 8-1 with 13:16 left in the contest.
• The Bears scored twice late in the second half, but couldn't complete the comeback as Krowel scored twice to give Buffalo State the win.
• The Bengals outshot Potsdam 20-13 and finished with an 11-5 advantage in draw controls.
• Elyse Stark (Lido Beach/Long Beach) finished with nine saves to preserve the win.

 
FOR THE FOES

• Rachael Huntley scored twice and Alli Stark added a goal to lead the Bears.
• Katie Longamore was credited with the loss in net, finishing with 10 saves in the contest.

PITTSFORD, N.Y.—Buffalo State spotted host No. 24 St. John Fisher an early lead and could not claw its way back in a 16-9 loss today at a snowy Growney Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Nina Schaefer (Lafayette/Lafayette) paced Buffalo State with four goals and an assist.
• Christina Krowel (Amsterdam/B.H.-B.L.) added two goals and an assist, and Kendall Skuse(Churchville/Churchville-Chili) chipped in a goal and two assists.
• Morgan Hogue (Painted Post/Corning) and Jackie Dufresne (Lake View/Frontier) also scored for Buffalo State.
• St. John Fisher opened the scoring with four goals in a span of less than five minutes and led 4-0 less than eight minutes into the contest.
• After the Bengals answered with a pair of goals, the Cardinals went on a 5-0 run, before Buffalo State scored the final two goals of the first half to trail 9-4 at the intermission.
• St. John Fisher scored the first two goals of the second half and the Bengals never cut the deficit to fewer than six the rest of the way.
• The Cardinals dominated possession with a 22-5 advantage in draw controls and a 43-11 edge in shots.
• Elyse Stark (Lido Beach/Long Beach) made 12 saves to keep Buffalo State in the contest and the Bengals converted on 9 of 10 shots on goal at the offensive end.

CLERMONT, Fla.— Buffalo State used a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to escape with a 1-0 victory over Mount Saint Vincent in the early game, before being one out away from the upset win over No. 4 Williams in a 4-3 loss in eight innings to close its Spring Break in Clermont, Fla.

• Julia Blujus (Amherst/Sacred Heart) finished 2 for 3 from the plate with a double to center field, a stolen base and a run scored.
• Kaelee Lynch (Atwater, CA/Buhuch Colony) picked up the game-winning RBI, going 1 for 2 from the dish.
• Cassie O'Hern (Augusta, NJ/High Point) added a single in the win.
• Marissa Hayes (N. Tonawanda/Niagara-Wheatfield) earned her first career shutout, allowing seven hits in seven innings of work.
• Hayes and Rachel Heizer were stuck in a pitching duel for the first three innings, until Mount Saint Vincent connected on three singles to load the bases with one out.
• Buffalo State responded with forcing back-to-back groundouts to keep the score level.
• In the bottom of the fourth inning, Blujus reached on an infield single and stole second to give the Bengals a runner in scoring position. Lynch sent the next pitch to right field that allowed Blujus to score the deciding run.
• Mount Saint Vincent threatened in the top of the sixth inning with a runner on third base, but was unable to even the score.
• The Bengals completed the 1-2-3 inning in the final frame, with three-straight outs, to seal the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Emily Frajdofer (Cheektowaga/JFK) paced the Bengals' offense in the second game, going 1 for 4 from the dish and picking up an RBI.
• Blujus and O'Hern finished 1 for 4 from the plate respectively and each recording a run scored.
• Hannah Dunlap (Batavia/Oakfield-Alabama) also picked up a run scored.
• Nicole Adams (Lockport/Starpoint) was credited with the loss on the mound, limiting the Williams' offense to only four runs off of six hits in 7 1/3 innings pitched.
• Williams struck first with a pair of hits that pushed across the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning.
• Buffalo State's Nicole Adams and Williams' Kirstin Mapes held the batters in check for the next four innings as the score remained 1-0.
• Following a two-out error by the Ephs and a walk to put two runners on base, O'Hern stroked a hit to shortstop but a poor throw lead to Blujus and Dunlap crossing the plate to give the Bengals a 2-1 lead.
• The Ephs responded with a one-out double to center field in the bottom of the seventh inning. Williams' next batter Riley Salvo hit a sacrifice fly to right field and the throw to home was one second too late as the runner crossed to tie the game and send it into extra innings.
• Buffalo State hit back-to-back singles to score the runner placed at second base, via the international tiebreaker, to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning.
• The Bengals fell victim to two errors in the bottom of the inning that sent the runner placed at second, via the international tiebreaker, home to tie the score at 3-3.
• A single by the next Ephs' batter loaded the bases and a final walk pushed home the game-clinching run.

 
FOR THE FOES

• Gabi Medvene-Cirigli led the William's offense, going 2 for 3 with a run scored.
• Kirstin Mapes finished 1 for 4 from the plate and pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on three hits.
• Rebecca Duncan was credited with the win on the mound, giving up one run on two hits in 1 2/3 inning in relief.

No. 14 Messiah slows Women’s Lacrosse, 14-6

GRANTHAM, Pa.— Buffalo State entered today's (March 27th) game with the fourth-ranked offense in the nation averaging 19.0 goals-per-game, but No. 14 Messiah grounded the visiting Bengals' attack and posted a 14-6 victory.

• Ally Ruggieri (Brockport/Brockport) netted three goals and added an assist to lead Buffalo State.
• Christina Krowel (Amsterdam/B.H.-B.L.) had two goals and an assist, and Kendall Skuse (Churchville/Churchville-Chili) also scored and grabbed six ground balls.
• Jackie Dufresne (Lake View/Frontier) picked up a pair of assists and had six draw controls.
• The Falcons controlled the first half, outshooting the Bengals 20-4, and jumped out to an 11-2 lead.
• Buffalo State battled hard in the second half, posting a 4-3 scoring advantage, but it was never able to climb back in the game.
• Messiah finished with a 35-10 advantage in shots and forced 29 Buffalo State turnovers, while committing just 17.
• Elyse Stark (Lido Beach/Long Beach) made eight saves in the loss.

Softball tops Colby for first win, falls short against Wisconsin-Stevens Point

CLERMONT, Fla.—Buffalo State scored four runs in the final two innings to rally from an early deficit to defeat Colby 7-6 in eight innings before falling to Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 4 -1 in the second game in Clermont, Fla.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Nicole Adams (Lockport/Starpoint) was 3 for 4 with two RBIs to pace the Bengals offense and started the game on the mound, allowing five runs off of only four hits in 4 2/3 innings.
• Danielle Szymkowiak (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) finished 2 for 4 from the plate including the walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning.
• Cassie O'Hern (Augusta, NJ/High Point) and Hannah Dunlap (Batavia/Oakfield-Alabama) each went 2 for 3 from the dish with an RBI, while Dunlap scored twice for the Bengals.
• Marissa Hayes (N. Tonawanda/Niagara-Wheatfield) was officially credited with the win, allowing one run on one hit in 3 1/3 innings of work.
• Colby jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with two singles and a double in the top of the first inning.
• Buffalo State responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third behind two sacrifice flies from Abijah Adams (Rochester/Greece-Arcadia) and Julia Blujus (Amherst/Sacred Heart).
• The Mules scored twice in the top of fifth inning and once in the top of the sixth inning to take a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning.
• The Bengals started the seventh inning with four-straight singles to cut the deficit to 6-5 with no outs. Nicole Adams stepped up and stroked a single to left field that scored Dunlap to send the game into extra innings.
• After Colby found themselves with a runner in scoring position, O'Hern caught a line drive and dove to tag out the runner for a double play to end the frame.
• Buffalo State completed the comeback with a one out, game-winning single to left field by Szymkowiak to score Kaelee Lynch (Atwater, CA/Buhuch Colony) in the bottom of the eighth inning.

• Paige Hartnett paced the Mules from the plate, going 2 for 3 with three runs scored and an RBI.
• Wiley Holton picked up the loss on the hill for Colby, allowing seven runs on 12 hits in 7 1/3 innings.

• Blujus paced the Bengals' offense in the second game, going 2 for 3 from the plate with two stolen bases.
• O'Hern and Dunlap each finished 1 for 4 from the plate with one double each.
• Hayes picked up the loss on the hill for Buffalo State, allowing four runs on nine hits in seven innings of work.
• After two innings of scoreless play, Wisconsin-Stevens Point's batters opened up the game with three runs on five hits in the top of the third inning that would prove to be the difference.
• The Pointers tacked on a fourth run in the top of sixth inning to push the lead to 4-0.
• Buffalo State threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-out double by O'Hern that scored Emily Frajdofer (Cheektowaga/JFK) to cut the lead to 4-1 but flied out on the next pitch to end the game.

 
FOR THE FOES

• Eight batters for Wisconsin-Stevens Point all recorded a hit, but Paige Allen led the way by going 2 for 4 with a run scored.
