City College names Lydia Travis athletic director

New York City, New York - 

Lydia Travis, a sports management expert with several professional affiliations, is The City College of New York’s new director of athletics. Her appointment is effective March 12.

“Lydia brings expertise and experience for both the academic and athletic facets of our student-athletes' college lives, and that's perfect for a place like City College,” said CCNY    President Vince Boudreau. “We are serious about supporting, and enjoying, athletic competition on this campus, but must never lose sight of the bigger picture: that our students must graduate with a successful academic record and a bright future before them.”

He added that Travis was the right person to build these values more deeply into the  program.

“I would like to thank President Boudreau, Interim Vice President for Student Affairs Wendy Thornton and the search committee for entrusting me to lead the City College of New York’s Athletics Program and serve the CCNY community,” said Travis. “I am eager to begin working with the talented coaches and staff who bring a wealth of knowledge to the program as we contribute to the development of our student athletes in and out of the playing arena.  I also look forward to engaging our alumni, campus and local communities to build on the amazing history and traditions of Beaver athletics.”

Travis is a member of the Women Leaders in College Sports, the National Association of Athletic Compliance and serves on the Minority Opportunity Athletics Association Membership Committee.  She joins CCNY from Queens College, CUNY's only NCAA Division II athletic program, where she was assistant athletics director for student-athlete performance.

Before her tenure at Queens, Travis served as assistant athletic director for internal relations and senior woman administrator at Kentucky State University. There she oversaw several sports programs and strengthened multiple processes to maximize the effectiveness of the athletic academic support services area. 

She also created a student-athlete peer mentoring program and KSU’s senior seminar series, designed to prepare senior student-athletes for careers after athletics. Under her direction, KSU earned three Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Academic Team Championships and held its highest department grade point average in over a decade.

Travis is a graduate of Virginia State University where she earned BA and master’s degrees in sports management.

City College of New York Baseball Falls In Non-Conference Tilt

The City College of New York baseball team was defeated in both games against St. Joseph's (Long Island) on Wednesday evening in Patchouge, New York. In the first game, which was nine-innings, City fell 14-8. In the seven-inning game following that, CCNY fell 5-1.

Game One
Michael Siklas and Rob Mandich had a big game as they both brought their bats to life. Siklas would only go one-for-five, but he would bring in four runs. Mandich went three-for-five and brough in two runs.

City got things started right away with a run in the bottom of the first. Anthony Cacchione was walked. After stealing second, Rob Mandich singled to left field to bring Cacchione in for the first run of the game.

Beavers Solid at All American Invitational

The City College of New York men's and women's track & field team competed at the All American Meet hosted by East Stroudsburg University in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. The men had 14 qualify for the CUNYAC Championship, while tallying 13 personal records. On the women's side, 10 qualified for the CUNYAC Championship, and eight set personal records.

On the men's track side, Jashane Morrison set a personal record 11.29 finish in the 100m dash to qualify for the CUNYAC Championship. He then set a personal record 200m dash time of 22.45 which qualified him for the CUNYAC Championship. His 200m dash time was .15 away from qualifying him for the ECAC Championship. Aaron Dickens set a personal best 11.60 finish in the 100m dash, which was just .10 seconds away from qualifiying for the CUNYAC Championship. In Daniel Alvarez's first 100m dash, he finished in 13.03. He followed that up with a personal best 28.65 finish in the 200m dash.  Timothy Lin set a personal record 23.79 finish in the 200m dash, while Onyelukachukwu Haidome competed in his first outdoor meet and finished in 26.95.

City College of New York Baseball Drops Two to the Dolphins

The City College of New York baseball team dropped both games of a double-header to CUNYAC leader CSI on Saturday afternoon in Staten Island, New York. In the first game, City fell 6-3, followed by a 10-0 loss.

Lehman Tops CCNY Men's Tennis

The City College of New York men's tennis team dropped their match 6-3 against Lehman College on Friday afternoon. The Beavers fell to 3-7, 0-5 CUNYAC while Lehman improved to 3-8, 2-4 CUNYAC.

Starting with doubles, Lehman was able to take the advantage. The Lightning took the doubles point on both courts one and two. Austin Thai and Brian Chen were able to take one point for CCNY with an 8-4 victory over Christopher Valez and Andrew Francisco on court three. Lehman led 2-1 going into singles.

The Lightning continued their dominance in singles when they took points on courts one through four. Chen and Thai continued their strong day when they were able to take down Lehman on courts six and five, respectively. Thai defeated Fransico 6-1, 6-0 to take the point for the Beavers. Chen was able to pick up the point with a 6-4, 7-5 victory on court six. Lehman took the match 6-3.

City will face CUNYAC opponent Brooklyn College on Sunday, April 17 at 12 p.m.

City College of New York Men's Tennis Edged By Hunter

The City College of New York men's tennis team was edged 5-4 by Hunter College on Tuesday afternoon in the Bronx, New York. City fell to 5-3, 0-4 CUNYAC while Hunter improved to 5-3, 5-0 CUNYAC.

The Beavers came out strong in doubles play hoping to take the match and give Hunter their first conference loss. Brian Chen and Rubin Lehman took one point for the Beavers when Hunter's double team retired on court three. Pavel Shapturenka and Max Bernstein was able to take the second point with a 8-3 victory on court one. Hunter took the point on court two, but not before CCNY did the damage and took a 2-1 lead.

It would all come down to singles play. Lehman took the point for CCNY by default and City led 3-1. Hunter would quickly take the points on courts one two and four. All three Beavers on those respective courts gave a good fight, but the Hawks went up 4-3. Andrew Chen fell on court five first he took the first set 6-4, but then fell in the next two to give Hunter the point. Reginald Duvalsaint came out strong in the number three position. After falling in the first set 6-4, he came back and took the second set 6-4 then took the third set with the tiebreaker 7-6 (7-3).

City will host Lehman on Friday, April 15 at 3:30 pm at Crotona Park.

CCNY Men's Tennis Falls to Drew

The City College of New York men's tennis team fell 8-1 to Drew University on Friday at the Simon Forum and Athletic Complex in Madison, New Jersey.

Drew started the match off taking all three points in doubles play. On all three courts, the Beavers lost 8-2. Going into singles Drew led 3-0.

Reginald Duvalsaint gained the sole point for CCNY on court four. He defeated Kevin Shulca 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8) to pick up the point. Pavel Shapturenka fell on court one 6-2, 6-0, while Max Bernstein fell 6-0, 6-1 on court two. In the number three position, Andrew Bregman was defeated 6-3, 6-0. Austin Thai and Andrew Chen fell on courts five and six. Thai was defeated 6-2, 6-1, while Chen was topped 6-0, 6-2.

The Beavers will travel to face CUNYAC foe York College today, Saturday, April 9 at 12 p.m.

No. 9 Shenandoah Tops Baseball in Series Finale

The City College of New York baseball team fell 12-0 in the series finale to No. 9 Shenandoah on Sunday afternoon.

Adrien Pena went four-for-four on the game as he led the Beavers on offense. He started his day with a single to left field in the second inning, but was unable to get around the bases. All four of Pena's hits were singles as he came up in the fourth, sixth and ninth inning for City.

In the third inning both Eric Giglio and Michael Siklas would get on base, but CCNY could not get them home. City had another chance in the fifth inning as Brendan Murphy and Siklas both reached base safely. It would be another two batters left on base for the Beavers.

Elmy Antonio recorded his first collegiate hit in the seventh inning. As they fought for a run, the Beavers would still be left scoreless.

The Hornets recorded 12 runs to take series sweep from City.

Anthony Cacchione pitched 4.0 innings giving up nine runs, five of which were earned. Matt Sola-Baker came in for 3.0 innings and gave up one hit and struck out one. Steven Giglio, who made his collegiate debut, pitched the final inning for CCNY. Giglio gave up three runs off of four hits.

City will travel to Hackettstown, New Jersey as they face Centenary College in a three-game series. First game of the series is Friday, March 12 at 3:30 p.m.
