Yonkers, NY - On Monday, May 20, the Foundation for the Yonkers Public Library will welcome beloved and best-selling author Sandra Cisneros to Yonkers as the featured speaker at its Spring Gala. The event will take place at the Riverfront Library from 6:00 to 8:30pm. Proceeds from the event will support educational programming at the Yonkers Public Library’s three branches.
Sandra Cisneros’s coming of age novel, The House on Mango Street, has sold over six million copies and been translated into over twenty languages. She has won many awards, including most recently the PEN/Nabokov Award for Achievement in International Literature. In addition, she has founded both the Macondo Foundation, an association of socially engaged writers, and the Alfredo Cisneros Del Moral Foundation, a grant-giving institution that served Texas writers for fifteen years.
“Sandra Cisneros’s writing resonates deeply with young people who are just starting to find their voice in the world,” said Foundation President Nancy Maron, “and her own story as a person deeply committed to social justice and artistic expression speaks to us all. This year, the Foundation will raise funds to help the library enhance programming for teens and young adults. We could not imagine a more exciting writer to join us.”
Funds raised will support and enhance Yonkers Public Library offerings to all patrons. Among the programs the Foundation hopes to support this year are enhancing teen spaces in all branches, developing a Homework Help program for high-school students, and expanding programming for the quickly growing young artist community at the Riverfront Art Gallery.
The Yonkers Riverfront Library is located at One Larkin Center, directly across from the Yonkers station, on the Metro North’s Hudson Line and is accessible to people with disabilities. Free parking will be available for Gala ticket holders.

ABOUT SANDRA CISNEROS: Sandra Cisneros is a poet, short story writer, novelist, essayist, performer, and artist whose work explores the lives of the working-class. Her numerous awards include NEA fellowships in both poetry and fiction, the Texas Medal of the Arts, a MacArthur Fellowship, several honorary doctorates and national and international book awards, including Chicago’s Fifth Star Award, the PEN Center USA Literary Award, the Fairfax Prize, and the National Medal of the Arts awarded to her by President Obama in 2016.
