Hamilton opened 2018 with seven straight losses but has rebounded with three consecutive wins. The Continentals wrap up their Florida trip against Worcester State University at Lake Myrtle Field #5 in Auburndale on Thursday, March 22 at 10 a.m.
Game 1: Hamilton 11, Hope 7
Six of Hamilton's 14 hits went for extra bases as the Continentals scored a season-high 11 runs. Matt Zaffino '21 doubled twice and drove in two runs, and Craig Sandford '19 singled and doubled and plated a pair of runs. Dean Rosenberg '18 doubled and tripled, Jarrett Lee '21 collected two hits, and Joe Suski '21 chipped in three runs batted in.
Dan DePaoli '18 posted his first win this year and the eighth of his Hamilton career as he allowed four earned runs on six hits in five innings. DePaoli struck out four and walked four. Ian Nish '19 picked up his first collegiate save after he came in with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the sixth. Nish allowed two of the runners to score on a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly, and then surrendered one more run in the seventh when he hit the leadoff batter, who eventually came around to score. Nish didn't allow a hit or a walk and fanned one in two innings.
Evan Maday paced Hope with four hits, including a double, and two runs batted in. Nick Lepore doubled and drove in two runs.
The Flying Dutchmen (2-7 overall) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning but the Continentals responded with their biggest inning of the year so far with six runs in the top of the second as the first eight batters reached base. Rosenberg led off with a triple to right center and scored on Zaffino's double to the same gap. Graham McOsker '20 followed with a bunt single and Sandford's double to right-center drove in Zaffino. Rich Marooney '21 was hit by a pitch and loaded the bases for Suski, who drew a walk. Lee's single through the right side scored Sandford and Marooney crossed home plate on a fielder's choice ground ball off the bat of Matt Cappelletti '21. Suski made it 6-1 when he scored on a bunt single by Nate Goodman '20.
Hope pulled within 7-3 with a run in the bottom of the fourth but back-to-back doubles by Rosenberg and Zaffino and a one-out single by Sandford gave Hamilton a six-run cushion. The Flying Dutchmen cut their deficit in half with three runs on just one hit in the bottom of the sixth. The Continentals answered again in the top of the seventh on a two-out, two-run single to center field by Suski with the bases loaded that made it 11-6.
Game 2: Hamilton 11, Hope 5
The nightcap was never in doubt as Hamilton put up five runs in the bottom of the first and scored in each of the first four innings. The top of the lineup, led by Zaffino, did most of the damage. Zaffino hit a grand slam in the first inning, added a single and scored three runs. Ethan Wallis '21 finished with three hits and Cappelletti singled and homered. Jordan Northrup '19 had two, including a double, and drove in a pair of runs.
Brian Lawson '20 was the star on the mound as he earned his first career victory. Lawson allowed two earned runs on seven hits, struck out three and didn't walk a batter in six innings. Brett Sandford '19 shut the door as he retired all three batters he faced in the seventh.
Danny Carrasco went 2-for-2 and Nick Holt and Jared Blum combined to toss 2.2 innings of scoreless relief for Hope.
The Flying Dutchmen scored a run in the top of the second but Cappelletti got it right back in the bottom of the inning when he blasted a solo home run over the wall in left. The Continentals tacked on three more runs in the third inning, highlighted by run-scoring singles by Suski, Wallis and Northrup. Hamilton put the game out of reach with two more runs in the fourth. Goodman drove in Zaffino with a single to left field and a sacrifice fly to center by Michael O'Hare '21 gave the Continentals an 11-1 advantage. Hope scored two runs in the sixth and again in the seventh.
