Buffalo State Softball falls to Maryville, loses heartbreaker to Thomas on Day 3

CLERMONT, Fla.— Buffalo State fell to Maryville in the early game 14-4, and then dropped a 4-3 decision against Thomas College in the late game today at the Legends Way Ballfields in Clermont, Fla.
 
GAME #1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE:  Maryville – 14, Buffalo State 4

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Hannah Dunlap (Batavia/Oakfield-Alabama) and Emily Frajdofer (Cheektowaga/JFK) paced the Bengals offense, each going 2 for 3 at the dish. Frajdofer chipped in an RBI while Dunlap scored twice.
  • Abijah Adams (Rochester/Greece Arcadia) continued her strong start to the season, going 1 for 2 with a pair of RBIs.
  • Danielle Szymkowiak (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) also collected a pair of hits while Cassie O'Hern (Augusta, NJ/High Point) was 1 for 3 from the plate with an RBI.
  • Nicole Adams took the loss in the circle, pitching the full seven innings and surrendering 14 runs on 10 hits.
  • Maryville jumped out to an early 11-0 lead with two runs on two hits in the top of the first inning and four runs on three hits in the third inning before plating five more runs in the top of the fourth inning.
  • The Bengals responded with back-to-back two-run innings in the bottom of the fourth and fifth inning to cut the deficit to 11-4.
  • Maryville completed the scoring with three runs in the top of the seventh inning and held Buffalo State to one hit in the bottom of the inning to preserve the win.
  • Buffalo State finished the game with 9 hits, compared to 10 hits by Maryville.
 
FOR THE FOES

  • Maryville had five players finish with three RBIs including Rachel Taylor who finished with 1 for 2 with a two-run homer.
  • Katlyn Smith picked up the win on the mound for the Scots, working 4 1/3 innings and allowing three runs on six hits.

RECORDS: Thomas (4-3), Buffalo State (0-6)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Dunlap and Abijah Adams each finished 1 for 3 from the plate, with Dunlap adding an RBI and a run scored.
  • Kaelee Lynch (Atwater, CA/Buhuch Colony) and O'Hern also finished 1 for 3 from the dish and each added a run scored.
  • Marissa Hayes (Tonawanda/Niagara-Wheatfield) recorded the loss on the hill for the Bengals, surrendering four runs on six hits.
  • Thomas struck first with a single to right center in the bottom of the first inning that found its way home off an error by Buffalo State.
  • The Terriers rattled off back-to-back triples in the third inning to extend their lead to 3-0.
  • Buffalo State jumped back into the game with a three-run fourth inning that featured four hits including a double and a triple by Nicole Adams.
  • Thomas added a final run in the fifth inning to retake a 4-3 lead going into the final two innings.
  • Nicole Adams reached third base in the seventh inning to give Buffalo State a chance to tie the game, but the Bengals grounded out to end the game.
 
FOR THE FOES

  • Kayla Bess and Lexi Colpack paced the Terriers, going 2 for 3 each from the plate. Colpack added an RBI in the contest.
  • Sydney LeBourveau picked up the win on the mound for Thomas, giving up three runs on five hits.
 
UP NEXT

Buffalo State will have a day off on Saturday, before taking on Middlebury at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 25.
