Softball Splits Conference Opener

Chester, NY (March 24, 2018) – Purchase softball returned to the diamond Saturday for a Skyline Conference twin bill against St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn.

Recent inclement weather moved the doubleheader to The Rock Sports Park in Chester, NY. The Panthers split with the Bears, taking the opener, 6-3, and then fell to the hosts, 19-11, in five innings in game two.

In the process, Purchase improved to 3-1, including 1-1 in league play. The split evens SJC-BKLYN record at 6-6 overall and 1-1, respectively.

The Panthers stuck early in game one, and plated three runs in the first. Purchase smashed four hits

with an Antonina Fiore (SR/Mount Sinai, NY), two-out, two-run single putting the visitors up 3-0.

The SJC bats were silenced for two hitless innings before ringing out four hits and three runs in the third to knot the game at 3-all.

Purchase plated a solo run in the fifth to take the lead for good and tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth on a Gabriella Carnevale (FR/Carteret, NJ) homer.

Led by a 4-for-4 effort with three RBI in game two by Sarah Kampuries, SJC-BKLYN earned the split.

In game two, Purchase got on the board first again, manufacturing a solo run. The Panthers made the most of a leadoff walk from Lisa Kentris (JR/Latham, NY), followed by a pair of grounders sandwiched around a stolen base.

The Bears then erupted for a nine-run second stanza, sending 14 batters to the plate in a seven-hit inning. SJC ballooned its lead to 13-1 after four more runs in the third.

The Panther bats woke up in the fourth and made the most of a Bear miscue to score six runs (one earned). But the Bears responded with three more runs in the bottom half to take a 16-7 lead into the fifth.

Purchase averted the run-rule scoring four more in the top half of the inning, but couldn't stop the Bears bats as they continued to score runs en route to the win.

For the Bears, Amber Wainwright extended her hitting streak to 11 games, driving in a team-best four RBI on the afternoon with three hits and three runs.

On the day, Purchase got two doubles from Kelly Hayes (JR/Staten Island, NY) and Kylia Maddox-Langley (JR/Mount Vernon, NY). Kelly Agostini (FR/Centereach, NY), Daniella Edelson (JR/Hopewell Junction, NY) and Kentris also had doubles. Shawna Smith (FR/Kingston, NY) tripled on the afternoon, while Carnevale had the lone homer for Purchase.

Fiore and Carnevale paced the Panthers with two RBI apiece in the opener. Maddox-Langley, the reigning conference pitcher of the week, hurled her second win in as many starts. She struck out six over seven innings.

Kentris paced the offense in game two, with three RBI and two runs. Victoria Capone-Froio (SR/Yonkers, NY) and Maddox-Langley recorded two RBI each in the nightcap.
