Baseball Defeats Fredonia, No. 15 Southern Maine

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Oswego State baseball team won a pair of high-scoring games on Saturday at Lake Myrtle Park.  The Lakers defeated Fredonia, 14-5, in the opening game of the day before winning a thrilling come-from-behind slugfest against No. 15 Southern Maine by a score of 15-14.

Fredonia falls to 10-4 (1-2) and Southern Maine moves to 4-5 while Oswego finishes their Spring Break trip at 8-5 overall and 2-1 in conference action.

Game 1
Junior Mike Dellicarri continued his stellar play with a 5-for-5 game, including seven RBI and three runs scored.  The only other Laker to record multiple hits on the day was catcher Colin Thompson who went 2-for-4 and scored three runs.

Oswego found themselves in an early hole when the Blue Devils strung together five hits in the first inning to go up 3-0.  The Lakers countered in the top of the second with three of their own as walks by Josh Hoagland and Zach Whelan started the inning.  A forceout at second put runners at first and third and Collin Thompson delivered an RBI single to left.  After a flyout by Kevin Hylas and walk by Ryan Enos loaded the bases, Dellicarri single to right to bring two in and tie the game at 3-3.

The Lakers struck again in the top of the fourth when Rocco Leone reached on an error and was moved to second on a fielder's choice.  Hylas singled to the infield and Enos was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Dellicarri for the second time in the game.  For the second time, Dellicarri delivered a single to record a pair of RBI and advanced to second on the throw home.  John Barnes would plate Dellicarri and Enos on the next play when he reach on an error to put Oswego up 7-3.

Dellicarri would strike again in the fifth with his third single to right field that brought home two more Oswego runners.  After a Barnes single and Eli Holton walk loaded the bases for the third time in the game, Josh Hoagland walked to bring in Dellicarri and extend the lead out to 10-3.

The lead was more than Brian Nolan needed.  After the opening inning, the junior pitcher recorded four straight scoreless frames, including striking out five of the six outs during the second and third innings to allow the Oswego offense to grab momentum.  In earning the win, he pushes his record to 2-1 on the season.

Seniors Mike Abrams and Patrick Gosney pitched the final four innings and combined to strike out three while only allowing a pair of late-inning runs to score.

Game 2
The second game of the doubleheader was a wild affair that saw the Lakers fall behind by a score of 11-3 after five innings of play.  The team started their comeback in the bottom half of that inning with a six-run outburst.  Dellicarri singled to start the inning.  Barnes followed with an infield single and then Holton doubled them both home but was thrown out trying to advance to third.  After a Lukas Olsson groundout, Matt Deblasio walked and advanced to third on a single from Hoagland.  Robert Donnelly brought DeBlasio home and then scored with Hoagland when Brandon Nicholson hit his second double of the game.

Oswego closed the game to one in the sixth when they were able to plate Holton after a two-out double.  Southern Maine answered with a pair in the top of the seventh to move out to 13-10.  Donnelly tripled to leadoff the bottom of the inning and Nicholson sacrificed him home to make the score 13-11.

Southern Maine tacked on another run in the top of the eighth before Oswego made one more push in the bottom half.  Holton walked with one out and Olsson was hit by a pitch to put two aboard.  DeBlasio then smacked the tying three-run homer to deep right field to even the score at 14-14.

Southern Maine was able to load the bases in the top of the ninth on a pair of hit batsmen and a single, but Matt Bowman dashed their hopes with a strike out and two flyouts to center.  In the bottom half, Dellicarri doubled with one out and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Southern Maine walked Barnes and Holton to give themselves double-play options, but one final wild pitch would allow Dellicarri to come home with the winning run.

The second game featured 37 total hits from both teams with Dellicarri, Barnes and Donnelly each getting three to lead the Lakers.  DeBlasio and Nicholson had three runs batted in to lead the team there.

Bowman improves his record to 2-1 on the season with the win.

The Lakers return to action next Saturday at 1 p.m. when they take on SUNY Canton at the Laker Baseball Field.
