CLEARWATER, Fla. (March 6, 2019)
– The USMMA women's lacrosse team completed its spring break trip down
to the Sunshine State with an 18-3 victory over King's College (Pa.) on
Wednesday morning at the Countryside Sports Complex. The win improves
the Mariners' record to 2-0 on the young season, while the Monarchs fall
to 1-3 in defeat.
Senior Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) recorded six points in the game with five goals and one assist. Freshman Jessie Wohner (Norfolk, Va.) added four goals and junior Grace McHugh (Sturbridge, Mass.) scored three times and dished out one helper. Freshman Maddie Schmidt (Mechanicsville, Va.) found the back of the net twice, while seniors Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.) and Maura Malone (Yorktown, Va.) both had a goal and assist apiece. Junior Angela Parker (Bowie, Md.) and freshman Cara Bebey (Fairfield, Conn.) rounded out the scoring for Merchant Marine with a goal each.
Reilly led all players with seven draw
controls, while Schmidt secured four and Malone had three. Willard had a
team-best four groundballs and Bebey scooped up three. In net, senior Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) made five saves over the 60 minutes to record the victory.
Three different players scored goals for
King's – freshmen Jen O'Connor, Brianna Raucci and Emily Sims. O'Connor
assisted on Raucci's and Sims' goals to finish the day with a team-high
three points. O'Connor also secured a team-best five draw controls.
Junior Kelly Pierce picked up a game-high five groundballs, while also
leading all players with four caused turnovers. Sophomore goalie Orla
Cottell made 12 saves in the losing effort.
The Mariners will return to New York and
will play their home-opener on next Tuesday night, March 12, against
Connecticut College. Opening draw is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Brooks
