Game 1: CCNY 4, Wesley 2
The Wolverines took an early lead with a run in the opening inning. William Musser reached home courtesy of Jordan Marucci's RBI double.
The Beavers answered back an inning later with three runs of their own in the top of the second. The Beavers got their first run on the scoreboard after freshman Josh Moreno reached home plate on a fielding error. The next at-bat, freshman Ethan Angress batted in junior Hamley Volquez scored on an RBI single up the middle to take a 2-1 lead. Angress brought in the Beavers the third run of the inning on a fielder choice to extend the lead to 3-1.
Wesley cut the lead down to one run (3-2) in the fourth, as William Foster scored on an RBI single via Alexander Weber.
CCNY added an insurance run in the sixth frame junior Cooper York grounded out to the pitcher to score Volquez, taking a 4-2 lead.
Angress led the team in game one, going was two-for-three at the plate, a run scored and one RBI. Sophomore Michael Espinal recorded a double and walked twice, while Volquez had one hit, walked once, and two stolen bases.
Senior Cal Romano earned his first win of the season on the mound, pitching seven complete innings.
Game 1: CCNY 4, Wesley 2
Wesley opened the game with a one-run homer by Musser.
In the second inning, contuied their momentum scoring seven runs in the inning taking an early 8-1 lead.
The Beavers scored their first run in the top of the third. Senior Rob Mandich singled to center field to plate Angress.
In the next inning, CCNY cut Wesley's lead down to three after a five-run inning. Angress started things off with a two-RBI single to left centerfield, scoring Volquez and J. Moreno. York followed with a two-RBI double to right field, bringing home Angress scored and Alex Velazquez.
Leading 9-6, Wesley added one run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 12-6.
With two outs, Mandich doubled to left centerfield for his second RBI of the game, scoring York. In the next at-bat, Michael Espinal blasted a two-run homer to right field, cutting the Wolverines lead back down to three (12-9)
In the bottom of the sixth, the Beavers kept Wesley off the scoreboard, as junior Christian Barletta struck out one batter while the final two outs came on a double play.
Volquez led off the seventh with a base hit up the middle and the Wolverines held off any rallies, recording three straight outs to end the game.
Mandich, Espinal, and Angress each had two hits and two RBI for CCNY. York recorded one hit, two RBI, and two runs, while Alex Velazquez and Volquez each had two hits and drove home a run.
The Beavers will be back on the diamond on Friday, Mar. 15 when they travel to Dobbs Ferry, NY to take on Yeshiva University in a doubleheader.
