ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell field hockey team lost its first game of the season Friday, falling to UAlbany 1-0 at Marsha Dodson Field.
The Big Red hung tough with the Great Danes for the entirety of the 60-minute contest but UAlbany would win the shots battle, upping Cornell by one each quarter. At the half, the Great Danes led with eighth shots to Cornell's six and the margin only grew as the Great Danes finished with 10 shots (5 on goal) compared to Cornell's eight with just one on target.
Natalie Stone led with four shots, Caroline
"They took chances and we didn't," said head coach Andy Smith. "We had enough chances in that first half to score three or four good goals and we didn't take those chances. Eventually that's going to catch up to you."
UAlbany's golden moment came at the 39:58 mark in the third quarter when Charlotte Triggs found herself surrounded by five Big Red defenders before a backhanded shot from the middle of the circle scooted past Aerin Park to the back right corner of the goal. The junior goalie extender her left leg as far as she could, but it wasn't enough and UAlbany would take its 1-0 lead all the way to the final buzzer.
Aerin Park recorded three saves, her most of the season so far, while UAlbany's Hannah Mangan and Sheridan Messier split time in net and combined for one save.
"We had some great opportunities and we just didn't finish on them today," said Smith. "That's hockey, though, and we'll come out here on Sunday ready to play a good game."
The Big Red meet its greatest competition of the season Saturday as the team to beat— #1 Michigan— visits Marsha Dodson Field at 11 a.m.
