OSWEGO, New York - A single goal from Alexa Restante
was all it took as the Oswego State women's soccer team defeated
Potsdam 1-0 at Laker Soccer Field Friday afternoon. The win marks
Oswego's first SUNYAC victory, giving them a 1-1-0 record in the
conference and improving the team to 6-4-0 overall. Potsdam moves to 0-2
in the SUNYAC (7-3 overall).
Just moments after the whistle to start the second half blew, the Lakers found themselves up 1-0. Bailey Waterbury played a through ball into Nicole Perniciaro
towards the top of the 18-yard box. Potsdam's goalkeeper came off her
line to retrieve the ball but Perniciaro beat her to it, sliding in and
chipping the ball over the keeper's right side. With the ball slowly
trickling towards the net, all Restante had to do was instep it into the
open goal, giving the Lakers the lead at the 48:08 mark.
The Lakers had plenty of other opportunities during the match, including a rip from Sarah Grupp midway through the first half that clanged off the crossbar. Oswego ended the game with 21 total shots, 13 more than the Bears.
Melissa Siegfried played all 90 minutes in goal for the Lakers, recording five saves on the day and earning her third shutout of the season.
Women's soccer returns to the pitch at 1 p.m. on Saturday as the team hosts conference-foe Plattsburgh at Laker Soccer Field.
