Buffalo, NY—Freshman defender Andrew Gomo (Fairfax, VT/BFA Fairfax) scored with 1:58 remaining in the first overtime to lift The Sage Colleges men's lacrosse team to a 13-12 OT victory at Medaille College Saturday. This was the first victory in program history for the first season program (1-1) on the season. Medaille falls to 0-3. The victory also marked the first career victory for Sage's rookie head coach, Ryan Lanigan.
Freshman attack Eric Fairhurst (Wooster, OH/Wooster) scored five goals and freshman midfielder Robert Martin (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) had nine assists with a goal to lead the Gators. Freshman attack Matt Fisher (Niskayuna, NY/Colonie) scored three times with an assist and freshman midfielder Shea Obado (Spotswood, NJ/Spotswood) had two goals and two assists. Along with Gomo's game-winner, freshman midfielder Adam Parker (Quechee, VT/Hartford) scored a goal for Sage. Freshman goalkeeper Michael Capitelli (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) made eight saves.
Towi Oakes scored four times while Tyler Fales and Jake Rush had two goals and three assists each for Medaille. David Cloy scored twice and the hosts got single scores from Chris Newton and Ben Erickson. Goalkeeper Mack Baker made 15 saves for the Mavericks.
Sage outshot Medaille, 46-35 and was 19 for 28 on face-offs. Medaille had a 47-39 ground ball advantage and was 22 for 25 on clears while Sage was successful on all but two of 23 clear attempts.
The Gators trailed 12-8 when Oakes scored with 5:44 left in the fourth period. But after two Fairhurst goals and a Parker score, Fairhurst tied it at 12-12 with 2:20 left in regulation. Martin then set up Gomo's overtime game winner. Sage led 3-1 early and it was 5-4 Medaille after the first period. The Mavericks led 9-5 at halftime and 9-7 after three periods.
Sage returns to action on Tuesday, March 12 for a non-league game at Farmingdale State at 4:00 p.m. The Mavericks host Alvernia Monday at 4 p.m.
