William Smith improves to 2-0 this season, while the Golden Flyers fall to 1-3 this year. Nine Herons scored a goal in the win. Junior Rachel Slagle logged two assists. Sophomore Mekayla Montgomery won a game-high seven draws. Sophomores Anna Murphy, Sadie Mapstone and Olivia Hofmann each grabbed a team-high three ground balls. Hofmann played the opening 50:23 in goal and matched a career-high with eight saves. Sophomore Jules Kennedy came in for the final 9:37 and had one save.
Addilys Geitner led Nazareth with three points on two goals and an assist. Emma Robinson added two goals. Vicki Arena registered a team-high five draw controls. Dylann Hogan grabbed a game-high four ground balls and caused two turnovers. Brianna Rizzari played all 60 minutes in goal for the Golden Flyers and finished with 17 saves.
The Herons opened the game scoring the first three goals in the opening eight minutes. Senior Bizzer Gahagan opened the scoring 4:45 in with her third goal this spring. Yackel found the back of the net off a feed from Slagle and junior Nicki Santora scored just over a minute later. It was Santora's second goal this year. Geitner and Robinson followed with goals for Nazareth to cut the Golden Flyers deficit to one. The Herons closed out the first half with three more goals to take a 6-2 lead into the break. Yackel started the run with her second goal of the afternoon on a free position with 9:11 on the clock. Mapstone and Montgomery closed out the first half scoring.
First-year Peyton McMahon opened the second half with a goal for William Smith extending the Heron lead to 7-2. The Golden Flyers responded with three straight goals to get back within two with 18:38 to go. Regan McGwin started the run and Emily Allen and Geitner followed with goals for Nazareth. With 12:21 on the clock, sophomore Ellie Burns scored her fifth goal this spring, and Yackel found the back of the goal for the third time in the game and fourth time this season just under three minutes later to put the Herons up 9-5. With 9:03 remaining, Robinson took advantage of a free position to get the Golden Flyers within three. Murphy responded for the Herons with 7:28 on the clock to extend the William Smith lead back to four. Sophomore Delia Lawver added the final goal of the game for the Herons.
William Smith held a 40-18 advantage in shots and a 23-20 edge in ground balls. The Herons held a 12-7 advantage in draws. William Smith was successful on 25-of-26 clear attempts, while Nazareth went 23-for-29.
The Herons are back in action tomorrow, March 10, when they travel to take on No. 13 Amherst at 2 p.m.
